DAEP Secondary Teacher Leader Team Making

Strides

This collaborative team is working diligently to enhance campus

engagement, focusing on both staff and students. They have
provided professional development sessions on teacher self-care
and positive classroom culture, as well as facilitated restorative
circles for teachers to address their social-emotional needs as they
embark upon meeting the demands of the campus. This dedicated
team of educators is also at the forefront of the Schlechty Center
engagement initiative, highlighting the student as the "customer"
and focusing on the development of engaging lessons, using the
Schlechty protocols and frameworks.

Interview: Navarro Middle School Teacher Leader

Gary McKee Talks SIBME

Q: How are you currently using SIBME with your supported

teachers?

McKee: I use SIBME as a method of visual feedback for the

teachers. During my visits to their classes, I position the camera at
different angles in the course of the activities, to capture multiple
aspects of the Supported Teacher’s instructional delivery, as well
as the students’ level of engagement.

Q: How have you or your supported teachers benefited from

this platform?

McKee: Once I’ve completed my observations, I return to my office

and review the entire recording. During that time, I insert comments
onto the video, which has a digital timestamp capability. Afterwards,
I copy the recordings to the Supported Teacher’s individual
“Huddle.” From there, they can simply read the comments, click on
each tab, and the video will play from that exact point. This is a
unique method of emphasizing the particular moment of the activity,
and eliminates the need for the Supported Teacher to watch the
video in its entirety. Another benefit is that it also provides the
opportunity for the Supported Teacher to see themselves, and the
students’ interactions, from a different perspective. They also use
the videos as a planning tool to improve instructional delivery.

Q: What feedback or evidence of impact have you seen as a

result?

McKee: Thus far, the Supported Teachers have noticed various

aspects in the videos during their instruction that they hadn’t
realized prior. By reading my positive constructive comments, in
addition to discussing during our weekly meetings, they are
developing an increased level of enthusiasm, and have been
making adjustments to improve their strategies. .

Q:What recommendations would you give to other Teacher

Leaders on using SIBME?

McKee: I recommend Teacher Leaders use SIBME for the

purposes of electronic video documentation. This offers visual
evidence of growth within the Supported Teacher’s instructional
delivery throughout the school year. In other words, it is another
form of Data Tracking to improve teaching strategies for the
campus. It also gives the Teacher Leader a foundation to create
and adjust an action plan of assistance, as well as encourages buy-
in from the Supported Teacher. In addition, SIBME is beneficial
during times of scheduling conflict for weekly meetings. The
Supported Teacher can view the video comments during their
earliest opportunity

Time-tracking Reports for Principals
