INTRODUCTION

Volcanic clastic sediment composed of pyroclastic flow, ash, lava are essential deposits in sedimentary succession of active tectonic margin setting which have been reworked or re-
sedimented (Fisher et.al, 1984). During Permian– Early Triassic, Sibumasu collide and subducted under Indochina terranes which cause widely distributed thick volcanic-clastic sedi-
ment filled in Semantan fore arc basin. This research conducted to further study of the characterization of volcanic-clastic sediment at Semantan Formation to reveal the mineral
composition and with it geochemical properties

PROBLEM STATEMENT & OBJECTIVE AREA OF STUDY

Problem statement:
This study was conducted at four different locations which are Kuala Lipis (Stop 1),
The mineral composition and the geochemical properties of the volcanic— clastic sediment at Se- Benta (Stop 2) and Triang (Stop 3) in Pahang and Ayer Hitam, Johor (Stop 4).
mantan Formation area rarely being highlighted by other author but based on the previous study
mostly suggested that Semantan Fm. Area have thick volcanic-clastic which deposited during Late
triassic.
Objectives:
1. To study the geology of Semantan Formation area A. Hitam

2. To analyse the sedimentology of volcanic turbidites at SemantanFormation area

3. To determine the mineral composition and the geochemical
properties of volcanic rock.

LITERATURE REVIEW
METHODOLOGY
 Fisher's classify volcaniclastic rocks, into autoclastic, pyroclastic, hydroclastic, alloclastic and epiclastic clas-
ses based on the particle-forming processes (Fisher, 1961, 1966).
 While, Mc Phie Classify volcaniclastic according to transportation and deposition mechanism. McPhie et
al. (1993) described four classes of deposit “autoclastic, pyroclastic, redeposited, syn-eruptive volcaniclas-
tic, and volcanogenic sedimentary.”
 During late Triassic Sibumasu collided and subducted beneath Indochina terrains which cause the thick
volcaniclastic deposited in Semantan Fore-arc basin along the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia.
 Hutchison (1989) reported that Semantan formation is fore-arc “accretionary” due to Triassic flysch-like
rock are covering the Central Belt of Penisula Malaysia mainly in Pahang to Johor
 Three rock types were identified by Umor , Abd Ghani (2012) which are rhyolite tuff, porphyritic quartz
rhyolite tuff and trachyte andesite at the vicinity of Benom which located in Semantan Formation

SEDIMENTARY LOG
X-RAY DIFFRACTION ANALYSIS
From the sedimentary log, there Sample 1 : Volcanic-Clastic from Kuala Lipis Sample 3 : Volcaniclastic from Triang
are four different facies can be
identified :
F1: Thick bedded sandstone (Ta)

F2 : Interbedded Sandstone Silt-

stone and Shale (Tb)

F3: Interbedded siltstone, mud-

stone and shale. (T (d))
Sample 2 : Volcaniclastic from Benta Sample 4 : Volcanic-Clastic from Ayer Hitam
F4: Thick bedded very fine sedi-
ment (Mud, Shales and Volcani-
clastic) (Te)

CONCLUSION
The discovery of abudant volcaniclastic deposited in every outcrop shows that the sediment being widely transport by turbulent flow. REFERENCE
