Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair of Steel Structures – Fall 2017

Assignment (2)
Due Date: 28/12/2017
Problem 1:
a) State the minimum energy requirement in Charpy V-notch test for St 37 in the Egyptian
Code and explain its influence on weldability of steel shapes?
b) State three factors that affect the decision to strengthen or replace a steel structure.
c) State the factors that affect field welding to existing steel structures?
Problem 2:
Following the procedure derived by Brown (1988), calculate the maximum load carried on
combined core column W6x25 reinforced using two plates 10x0.875 in welded to flanges and
considering initial dead load (Qo) equal to 120 kips for the following cases:
a) Length of column = 150 in
b) Length of column = 300 in
Consider fy = 36 ksi, column is hinged-hinged.
Problem 3:
Steel plate girder (Fig. 1) suffered from severe corrosion of upper and lower flanges and
connecting angles leading to loss of 60% of its effective area, propose a suitable
strengthening procedure (if needed) and show detailed calculation steps considering the
following: [Hint: Ignore reduction in section properties due to existence of rivets]
• Tests showed that existing plate girders’ material is St. 44 - Strengthening plates
shall be St. 37 - Unsupported length = 7 m.
• Removal of existing rivets is not permitted.
• Design Straining Actions: Bending Moment = 380 t.m (Middle of Beam), Shear
Force = 40 tons (Beam Ends)

Corroded Area:
Flanges & Connecting Angles

Problem 4:
An existing steel platform consists of the arrangement shown in Fig. 2. Study if strengthening
applications are required for different members if live load intensity shall increase to 500
kg/m2: [Consider St. 37]
Current Loads:
Decking = 20 kg/m2, R.C. slab thickness = 8 cm, Flooring = 100 kg/m2, Live load intensity =
350 kg/m2

Problem 5:
Propose two possible strengthening techniques for a C.T.G. beam (B.F.I. 32) to accommodate
higher crane capacity. The beam has a span of 4.9 m was designed to support two moving
concentrated loads equal to 7.5 tons and spaced at 2 m. It is required to strengthen the system
to support two moving loads of 10 tons spaced at 2 m. During repair, only loads resulting
from beam own weight can be considered. Suggest a strengthening procedure for the
considered beam. [St. 37]
Elaborate your answer with calculations and sketches.

Problem 6:
An existing steel beam with the cross sectional properties shown in Fig. 3. It is required to
calculate section flexural capacity upon addition of a 150 x 1.2 mm carbon FRP plate to the
bottom face only of the beam [St. 37, EFRP = 300 GPa].
