introduction
If you’ve been looking for a cost-effective yet powerful way to learn to use the Garmin G1000 and maintain proficiency,
look no further. The Flight1 Aviation Technologies Garmin G1000 Student Simulator provides G1000 avionics
training in a realistic, dynamic simulation environment. It’s the most unique G1000 training solution available.

Unlike part-task trainers like the G1000 simulator available from Garmin, the Flight1 Aviation Technologies
G1000 Student Simulator works together with Lockheed Martin® Prepar3D™ and Microsoft® Flight Simulator X
to provide you with an immersive training experience. The G1000 Student Simulator provides a rich avionics
simulation and the flight simulation provides an unmatched aircraft and environmental simulation. By combining
both, you can learn and master the G1000 in the same cognitive environment in which you’ll use it. You’ll have to
manage the avionics while simultaneously managing the challenges of flying the airplane - without burning any fuel.

Just some of the many things you'll be able to do with the G1000 Student Simulator include:

• Become comfortable operating the G1000’s complex interface of buttons, knobs, softkeys, page groups,
and pages while you are flying, navigating and communicating within the simulated world.
• Develop a good scan for flying Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA) and maintain it, even if you’re grounded
for weeks or months at a time. Practice flying after failures of the displays, the radios and the transponder.
• Master using the G1000 during VFR and IFR flights between any airports anywhere in the world, in any
season, in any weather conditions, at any time of day or night. Maintain proficiency flying the departures,
arrivals and approaches you fly most frequently.
• Master the G1000’s numerous autopilot modes (including modes like Flight Level Change that were only
recently introduced to GA aircraft).
• Become proficient using one of the G1000’s most powerful new features: flying fully coupled WAAS/LPV
approaches in both vertical and lateral modes. Practice flying holding patterns and DME arcs.
• Learn how to use Vertical Navigation (VNAV) to take the guesswork out of descending to specific waypoints
and airports to reach them at specific altitudes. Master using OBS mode and the SUSP button to suspend
and resume waypoint sequencing during missed approaches, departure procedures and holds.

We've designed the G1000 Student Simulator to be used in all sorts of configurations: On one or more PCs
with a yoke and rudder pedals, on a laptop with a gaming joystick, integrated with realistic G1000 display unit
hardware and high end controls, or Integrated into a home cockpit. For more information, see the General
Setup and Detailed Recommendations section on pages 6 through 9.

G1000 Student Simulator USER'S GUIDE
introduction
Because the G1000 Student Simulator is a stand-alone software application that interfaces with Prepar3D™
or Flight Simulator X over a network (or on the same PC), we were unhampered by the limitations that the
simulator provides for avionics development. Thus, we were able to go deeper in our simulation of the G1000.
The result is a highly realistic and highly flexible G1000 simulation that will save you time and money.

We’ve worked with leaders in the aviation training industry to make sure that our G1000 Student Simulator
provides the features they need. The result is pretty unique: the most cost-effective and flexible G1000 simulation
available. Combine it with our other FITS-inspired training solutions (VISPRO and Scenario Builder) and you’ll
have a cutting edge suite of training tools you can put to work right away.

The G1000 Student Simulator software is available in Standard and Pro versions. The Pro version features
everything in the Standard version, plus support for integration with simulated G1000 hardware. It also includes
a commercial use license and a simulated Integrated Electronic Standby Instrument system.

important information
G1000 Network Module

The G1000 Network Module allows the G1000 Student Simulator to communicate with Flight Simulator. The
G1000 Network Module must be installed on the PC that is running Flight Simulator regardless if the G1000
Student Simulator is running on the same PC (Local PC) or on a different PC (Remote PC). For more information,
see the G1000 Network Module section on pages 13 and 14.

G1000 Student Simulator Approved Aircraft

The G1000 Student Simulator software package includes custom Flight Simulator aircraft that are approved
for use with the G1000 Student Simulator. Before using your software, these aircraft should be installed into
Prepar3D™ or Flight Simulator X, using the separate G1000 Student Aircraft Installer application. We strongly
suggest using one of these aircraft to ensure the best training experience. For more information, see the G1000
Student Simulator Aircraft Installer section on pages 42 and 43.

WARNING: Using an aircraft that is not approved to be compatible with the G1000 Student Simulator can
cause unforeseen problems with flight dynamics, autopilot or other configuration issues with the G1000 Student
Simulator and is not recommended. Always select one of the F1Tech G1000 aircraft listed.

SoundStream Application

SoundStream is a utility included with the G1000 Student Simulator software package that allows Microsoft®
Flight Simulator X to maintain its sound environment when another application, such as the G1000 Student
Simulator, has focus (not required when using Prepar3D™). It is intended for use when Flight Simulator X is
running on the same PC that the G1000 Student Simulator is running on.

Installation isn't necessary if  you're running the G1000 Student Simulator on a different PC as Flight
Simulator or if you're using Prepar3D™. For more information, see the SoundStream Application section on
pages 43 through 45.

User waypoints utility

The G1000 Student Simulator includes a User Waypoint

utility that allows you to add custom waypoints to the
G1000 Student Simulator navigation database. This
is useful if a waypoint is missing from the navigation
data, or if you need to add a custom waypoint for
any reason.

G1000 Student Simulator Keyboard Commands

The G1000 Student Simulator provides a method to assign and use keyboard commands to control many
functions of the G1000 Student Simulator PFD, MFD (and audio panel included with the G1000 Student Simulator

G1000 Student Simulator USER'S GUIDE
general setup and detailed recommendations
This section is provided to help you choose the PC and accessories that we recommend to get the best out
of your G1000 Student Simulator software. Whether you've chosen to use the G1000 Student Simulator with a
single PC and single monitor with a joystick, or if you've purchased an F1 Tech 1000 Integrated Training Panel
with the G1000 Student Pro version and want a turn-key setup with dual PCs, we've got you covered.

setup recommendations

There are a number of different setup options available depending on what version of the G1000 Student
Simulator you're using (Standard or Pro), how realistic and immersive you want your training environment to
be, and of course, your budget. In this section, we'll detail some more common setups. For more detail
about these setups, including specific recommendations, please refer to pages 7 through 9.
Basic Setup - G1000 Student Simulator Standard version with a single PC, single monitor and joystick.
Intermediate Setup - G1000 Student Simulator Standard version with single or dual PCs, dual monitors
and joystick or control yoke. A set of rudder pedals and a throttle quadrant can be added to this setup for
increased immersion and added realism.
Advanced Setup - F1 Tech 1000 Integrated Training Panel with G1000 Student Simulator Pro, dual PCs,
single monitor, MIMO touchscreen portable monitor or tablet, control yoke, rudder pedals and throttle quadrant.

PC recommendations

Although most PC brands will work well as long as the specifications

meet or exceed our recommendations in the Detailed Recommendations
sections, we recommend using Jetline PC's. Jetline PC's use high-quality components, are built to
your specifications and are optimized out of the box to run Lockheed Martin® Prepar3D™ and
Microsoft® Flight Simulator X. For more information, visit www.jetlinesystems.com.

monitor recommendations

For the best experience, we recommend using 27" or larger wide screen LCD or LED
monitors. These types of monitors can be mounted on a table or desk, or can be mounted
on a dual monitor desk stand to suit your specific setup. Using a larger monitor will make
the training experience more immersive and allow you greater flexibility, especially when
using only a single monitor. If you're not using the F1 Tech 1000 Integrated Training Panel,
touchscreen monitors can be used for greater realism, by allowing you to control the G1000 Student Simulator
gauges by touch instead of using a mouse. If you are using the F1 Tech 1000 Integrated Training Panel, a 7"
MIMO touchscreen portable monitor or a tablet can be used to view electronic charts and more.

flight control recommendations

The flight controls you choose can vary widely. A simple joystick controller, such as the
Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick can be used, or for more realism, you can use a flight yoke,
rudder pedals and throttle quadrant like those available from CH Products. For the ultimate
in realism, a Flight Console such as the Elite Simulation Pro Panel can be used.

accessory recommendations

Accessories include items such as desks and monitor stands. Most setups can simply use a table or
basic computer desk. If you're using dual monitors or a single monitor with the F1 Tech 1000 Integrated
Training Panel, we recommend using a dual monitor desk stand to mount the monitors one above the
other (or above the F1 Tech 1000 Integrated Training Panel). This allows for the most comfort and a
more realistic viewing environment. If desired, instead of using a table or basic computer desk, a Versa
table could be used. Versa tables often feature height adjustable racks, mounts, accessory trays and
more, allowing you customize your setup for the ultimate in comfort and ergonomics.
6
G1000 Student Simulator USER'S GUIDE

incorporated directly into a 2D instrument panel or virtual cockpit like typical gauges.
• Adjusting the barometer on the PFD or MFD automatically adjusts the barometer on the standby altimeter
and adjusting the barometer on the standby altimeter automatically adjusts the barometer on the PFD. This
is normal behavior and done by design due to limitations within Flight Simulator.
• To view the Fuel Range Ring, you must set the correct Remaining Fuel value in the MFD ENGINE/SYSTEM
sub-page. In addition, the aircraft must be traveling at 40 knots airspeed or greater.
• If you experience MFD Map display performance issues, one or more of the Terrain Features can be disabled
to improve performance.
• Pressing the G1000 Student Simulator Interface Reset to Default Settings button will Reset ALL G1000
Student Simulator Interface options, including Window Properties, and require you to close and Restart the
G1000 Student Simulator.
• Using an aircraft that is not approved to be compatible with the G1000 Student Simulator can cause
unforeseen problems with flight dynamics, autopilot or other configuration issues with the G1000 Student
Simulator and is not recommended. Always select one of the F1Tech G1000 aircraft listed.

If you're running the G1000 Student Simulator and Flight Simulator on separate PC's, you can skip
this section.

Flight Simulator - Disable Pause on Task Switch:

You MUST disable the Flight Simulator Pause on Task
Disable Pause on Task Switch Switch option, otherwise, every time you click on the one the
G1000 Student Simulator gauge windows, Flight Simulator
will pause.

Install SoundStream to Maintain Flight Simulator X Sound:

SoundStream is a utility included with the G1000 Student Simulator
software package that allows Microsoft® Flight Simulator X to maintain its
Disable Mute on Lost Focus
sound environment when another application, such as the G1000 Student
Simulator, has focus. For more information, see the SoundStream Application
section on pages 43 through 45. Installation isn't necessary if  you're
running the G1000 Student Simulator on a different PC as Flight Simulator
or if you're using Prepar3D™. When using Prepar3D™ on the same PC as the G1000 Student Simulator, you must
disable the Mute On Lost Focus option in the Prepar3D™ Options > Sound menu.

Multiple Monitor Support:

Flight Simulator and the G1000 Student Simulator gauges can be displayed on one monitor or on multiple
monitors. For example, some users may prefer displaying Flight Simulator on one monitor and displaying the
G1000 Student Simulator PFD, MFD and other gauges on a second monitor. For more information, see the
Configuring the Flight Simulator and G1000 Student Simulator Gauge Windows section on pages 33 and 34.

If you're using multiple monitors, simply left-click and HOLD the gauge window frame to drag the gauge
onto the desired monitor. The same can be done with the Flight Simulator window, as long as Flight
Simulator is running the Windowed mode.

Controlling Open Windows:

Keep in mind that Flight Simulator and the various G1000 Student Simulator gauges all reside in their own
separate windows and only one window can have 'focus' and can be controlled at any one time. This is a
limitation of Flight Simulator. For example, if you're using the MFD and need to raise your flaps, you will need
to left-click on the Flight Simulator window to gain control of it, then raise the flaps by pressing the 'F5' key on
your keyboard. Remember, a window must have focus to input a command, whether it be Flight Simulator
or one of the G1000 Student Simulator gauge windows.

Configuring Flight Simulator and G1000 Student Simulator Gauge Windows:

We've provided an example below of a dual monitor configuration. This configuration can be used if you're
running the G1000 Student Simulator on a single PC or two separate networked PC's. This is our recommendation
for the best user experience outside of using a hardware-based Glass Cockpit System.
Suggested Standard Version Single PC or Networked PC Dual Monitor Configuration

1) Use the various G1000 Student Simulator Category Options to configure the G1000 Student Simulator and
to show and configure the G1000 Student Simulator gauge windows on your monitor (or monitors), or on
your hardware-based Glass Cockpit System. Move, resize and configure the gauge windows to suit your
specific setup. For more information, make sure to read and understand the G1000 Student Simulator

Configuring the Flight Simulator and G1000 Student Simulator Gauge Windows:
If you're using a single PC with a single monitor, we recommend using the configuration shown below.
Suggested Standard Version Single PC / Single Monitor Configuration

IMPORTANT: If any of the G1000 Student Simulator gauge windows are allowed to overlap the Flight Simulator
window, when you click on the Flight Simulator window to gain focus of it (for example, to lower the flaps), the
G1000 Student Simulator windows will be hidden behind the Flight Simulator window. This behavior is typical
of all program windows. If Flight Simulator is displayed on a secondary monitor or if you're running the G1000
Student Simulator and Flight Simulator on two separate networked PCs this is not an issue.
If you're using a Flight Simulator aircraft other than a G1000 Student Simulator approved aircraft (not
recommended), press the 'F10' key to switch to the 2D panel view. Your aircraft's 2D instrument panel
can then be hidden by pressing the 'W' key four times or by pressing 'Shift+1'. This will allow you to view the
Flight Simulator window without the 2D instrument panel visible.

Controlling the G1000 Student Simulator and Flight Simulator

How you control the G1000 Student Simulator gauges and Flight Simulator itself will vary depending on what
G1000 Student Simulator version you're using and how it's configured. For example, controlling Flight Simulator
functions, such as raising and lowering the flaps, can be controlled using Flight Simulator key commands and
if you're using the G1000 Student Simulator Standard version, all G1000 Student Simulator gauges can be
controlled using your mouse. Even many of the aircraft's functions, such as lighting, ignition and much more,
can be controlled using the G1000 Student Simulator Standard version's switch panel.

If you're using the G1000 Student Simulator Pro version with a hardware-based Glass Cockpit System, all G1000
Student Simulator PFD and MFD functions can be controlled directly through your glass cockpit's hardware.
You should still read over the information in this section though to become familiar with the G1000 Student
Simulator gauge functions. Because of the many different ways both programs can be configured, it will be up
to you to determine the best method for you and your students to use.

For information about using keyboard commands to control Flight Simulator, and for a complete list of
Flight Simulator keyboard commands, refer to the help system included with your version of Flight Simulator.

Click-Spots and Basic Functions Overview

To help you learn how to control them, this section details the different click-spots and related basic functions
of the different gauges that make up the G1000 Student Simulator Standard and Pro versions. This section does
not detail the functions and use of the G1000 Flight Deck. For that you should use the official Garmin G1000
Integrated Flight Deck Pilot's Guide. For more information, see the G1000 Integrated Flight Deck Pilot's Guide
section on the previous page.

All G1000 Student Simulator gauge functions are controlled using click-spots. When you roll your mouse pointer
over a click-spot, the mouse pointer will turn into a hand. This indicates you can left-click that spot to control its
function. In addition, rotary dials can be turned using your mouse's scroll wheel. Moving the scroll wheel forward
will increase function settings (turn dial clockwise) and moving the scroll wheel backward will decrease
function settings (turn dial counter-clockwise). If a control does not have a modeled function associated with
it, the mouse pointer will not turn into a hand or the Tooltip (if enabled) will read INOP.

Standby Gauges Click-Spots and Basic Functions - Standard Version

The G1000 Student Simulator Standard version includes a standby airspeed indicator, artificial horizon and
altimeter to provide backup flight information should a failure occur with the primary flight instruments displayed
on the PFD.

2 3 4 5 6 7

1) TEMPERATURE/ALTITUDE SCALE WINDOW - This window is used to help determine true airspeed. The
numbers in the middle of the hash marks represent altitude (in thousands of feet) and the fixed numbers
above the window represent outside air temperature (in 10º increments).

2) TAS CALIBRATION KNOB - This knob is used to calibrate true airspeed by adjusting for temperature and
altitude. Turning the knob to the right increases the altitude setting (and TAS) and turning the knob to the left
decreases the altitude setting (and TAS).

To determine true airspeed, turn the TAS calibration knob so that your aircraft's nearest current altitude
(indicated by the numbers in the middle of the hash marks) line up with the nearest current outside air
temperature (indicated by the hash marks at the top of the window). The aircraft's current true airspeed will
be displayed in the TAS window at the bottom of the gauge.

3) TAS WINDOW - This window displays the aircraft's true airspeed. TAS must be adjusted for temperature
and altitude, using the TAS calibration knob. See TAS CALIBRATION KNOB above.

4) WING INDICATOR - Indicates the current position of the aircraft's wing. This part of the instrument is
stationary and is always parallel with the wing of the aircraft.

5) WING INDICATOR ADJUSTMENT KNOB - This knob is used to adjust the wing indicator to align with the
horizon bar. This allows adjustment to the height of the pilot. Preferably, the adjustment should be made
when level on the ground, prior to takeoff. Turning the knob to the right lowers the wing indicator and turning
the knob to the left raises the wing indicator.

6) BAROMETER ADJUSTMENT KNOB - This knob is used to adjust the barometer setting to match the current
local altimeter setting.

IMPORTANT: Adjusting the barometer on the PFD or MFD automatically adjusts the barometer on the
standby altimeter and adjusting the barometer on the standby altimeter automatically adjusts the barometer
on the PFD. This is normal behavior and done by design due to limitations within Flight Simulator.
7) CROSSHATCH FLAG - Indicates that the aircraft is below or above 10,000 feet. When the aircraft is below
10,000 feet, the crosshatch flag is visible. The crosshatch flag will slowly disappear as the aircraft climbs and
approaches 10,000 feet. Over 10,000 feet, the crosshatch flag will no longer be visible.

8) HG KOLLSMAN WINDOW - Displays the barometric scale in Inches of Mercury (Hg). The scale can be
adjusted by turning the barometer adjustment knob to match the current local altimeter setting.

using takeoff/go-around mode

The G1000 Student Simulator features a Takeoff/Go-Around mode that can be triggered in two ways:

(A) As a keyboard command on the PC where the G1000 Student Simulator is running.

(B) As a keyboard or joystick command on the PC where Flight Simulator is running.

Option (A):
The first option (A) requires setting up a G1000 Student Simulator keyboard command as described in the
Creating Keyboard Commands section on the next page.

To do this, open the F1G1000_keyboard.ini file located in the Local Disk > Flight1 Aviation Technologies >
G1000 Student folder in a text editor (such as Notepad), then add the name GAButton= to the ini file and
save the file. It can be added in either the [G1000_PFD] or [G1000_MFD] sections.
46
G1000 Student Simulator USER'S GUIDE
utilities, applications and customizations
using takeoff/go-around mode, Continued....

Option (B):
The second option (B) is for a joystick connected to the PC that is running Flight Simulator. If you run the G1000
Student Simulator and Flight Simulator on the same PC, you can disregard this procedure.
The file named “goaround.ini”, which is located in the Local Disk > Flight1 Aviation Technologies > G1000
Student > Go Around folder should be copied into the main root folder of Prepar3D™ or Flight Simulator X.
This is the same folder that contains either Prepar3D.exe or FSX.exe.

In the Flight Simulator Options > Settings > Controls > Buttons and Keys tab, there is only one field which
is named, “G1000_TOGA”. You can choose either a keyboard command, or you can set up a joystick
command. We only support the TO/GA button in this way.

An example of a joystick command is this: joystick:0:button:0.

This means the first joystick that is connected to the PC and the first button of the joystick. 0 is considered the
first item, not (1). Other buttons can be assigned, but since we use a SimConnect function, more
information on configuring this function can be found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/
cc526983.aspx#SimConnect_MapInputEventToClientEvent.

Creating Keyboard Commands

Keyboard commands can be used to control many functions of the G1000 Student Simulator PFD, MFD (and
audio panel included with the G1000 Student Simulator Standard version). Follow the procedures below to
assign keyboard commands to the functions desired.

1) From within Windows Explorer, open the F1G1000_keyboard.ini file located in the Local Disk > Flight1
Aviation Technologies > G1000 Student folder in a text editor (such as Notepad). You will be presented with
a list of functions that can be controlled by a keyboard command. The functions that keyboard commands
can be assigned to for each instrument are separated by instrument name. For example, all functions that
keyboard commands can be assigned to for the PFD are listed under [G1000_PFD].

2) Scroll down to locate the function you would like to assign a keyboard command to. For example....

[G1000_PFD]

ComSwap=

....then enter the keyboard command

you would like to use. For example....

[G1000_PFD]

ComSwap=ctrl+c

3) Repeat this process to assign keyboard commands to any remaining functions you would like to, then save
and close the file.

Keyboard commands must consist of combination commands only! For example, ctrl+c or shift+c or
ctrl+shift+c. Single character commands are not supported. In addition, because only one G1000
Student Simulator gauge window can be controlled at one time, duplicate keyboard commands can be
assigned to the same function for two different instruments for continuity. For example, you can assign the
same keyboard command (e.g., ctrl+c) to control the COM Swap function on both the PFD and the MFD.

If you assign keyboard commands while the G1000 Student Simulator is running, changes will not
function without first closing the G1000 Student Simulator, then launching it again.

To manually configure the G1000 Student Simulator software to work with other hardware:

1. Select the F1 Tech 1000 radio button.

2. Close the G1000 Student Simulator interface and restart it so the changes take effect.
3. Edit and save the F1G1000_joystickmap.ini file (see below).
4. Edit and save the F1G1000_keyboard.ini file (see below).

You can specify which of your hardware buttons and knobs control which G1000 functions in the G1000 Student
software in the F1G1000_joystickmap.ini and F1G1000_keyboard.ini files. The files are both located in
C:\Flight1 Aviation Technologies\G1000 Student Pro (or wherever you installed the G1000 Student Simulator
Pro software).

Editing F1G1000_joystickmap.ini
Edit F1G1000_joystickmap.ini to map hardware events generated by buttons and knobs on a joystick, or by
hardware emulating a joystick.

IMPORTANT: Before editing the file, close the G1000 Student Simulator.

This ini file has sections to map hardware to the G1000 Student Simulator PFD, MFD, Audio panel, and GCU 475
MFD controller buttons. The sections are labelled with headers: [G1000_PFD], [G1000_MFD], [G1000_Audio],
and [GCU475].

Within each section, the G1000 Student Simulator’s button functions are listed on the left, with the associated
joystick button on the right after an “=” (equal sign):
[G1000_PFD]
Softkey1=G1000 PFD:button40

In the example above, “button 40” on the “G1000 PFD” joystick is mapped to the “Softkey1” function on the
G1000 Student Simulator PFD.

The joystick (or emulated joystick) name and button name can be obtained from the Windows Control
Panel/Game Controllers dialog. The joystick name must be written exactly the same as it is written there,
followed by a colon and then a button name. The format that is accepted is “joystickname:Button##” where ##
is the number of the button.

IMPORTANT: In the Game Controllers dialog, the numbering starts at “01,” so you need to subtract 1 from the
button number stated there when you type it into the ini file. The lowest button number in the .ini file will
therefore be “00”.

NOTE: Joystick commands will only function when the G1000 Student Simulator is connected to P3D or FSX.

14
Editing F1G1000_keyboard.ini
Edit F1G1000_keyboard.ini to map hardware events generated by a keyboard, or by hardware emulating a
keyboard.

Within each section, the G1000 Student Simulator’s button functions are listed on the left, with the associated
keyboard command on the right after an “=” (equal sign):
[G1000_PFD]
ComSwap=CTRL+C

In the example above, the keyboard command “CTRL+C” is mapped to the “ComSwap” function on the G1000
Student Simulator PFD.

IMPORTANT: Single character commands are not supported. Only use combination commands like Shift+A,
CTRL+B, or CTRL+SHIFT+1. You can assign the same key command to functions in different sections of the .ini
file. For example, you can assign CTRL+2 to the Softkey2 function in both the [G1000 PFD] and [G1000 MFD]
sections.

NOTE: Keyboard commands will only function when the G1000 Student Simulator is connected to P3D or FSX.
