Answer all questions in this section.

1. A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the length, L, of
a coil of wire wound round a test tube and its number of turns,n. Vernier calipers are used to
measure the length, L, of the coil.

Diagram 1.1 shows the zero error, X, on the Vernier calipers.

Diagram 1.2 shows the reading, l, on the vernier calipers when the number of turns, n = 5.

n=5

l = 0.39 cm

2
The procedure of measurement is repeated with the number of turns, n = 10, 15, 20 and 25.
The corresponding readings of the Vernier calipers are shown in Diagram 1.3, 1.4, 1.5
and 1.6.

(b) (i) Based on Diagram 1.1, determine the zero error, X.

X = .................................... cm
[1 marks]

(ii) Based on Diagrams 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6, determine the length of the coil, l.
The actual lengths of the coil, L, are determined using the formula:

L=l−X

where X is the zeroerror on the Vernier calipers.

Tabulate your data for all values of n, l, and L in the space below.

[6 marks]

(c) On the graph in page 6, plot a graph of L against n.

4. Before sports day, Eric helps Mr Lee to prepare an audio system at the school field as in
Diagram 4. When a coherent sound is played through the speaker, Eric run from point X to Y
and he could hear the loud and soft sound alternately.
When the position of both speakers is change to P and Q, Eric run again with the same speed
from point X to Y. This time he could hear the loud and soft sound alternating more frequently.
