Rationale
Background
Lesson Format
The lesson format was created out of much of my own frustration with
watching various online drumming lessons and tutorials. I would
painstakingly sift through a 15-20min tutorial looking for the ‘nuggets of
gold’ (the demonstration and the transcription). As an experienced and
musically literate drummer, I didn’t need to sit through 5 minutes of
introductions and have an instructor explain to me what a sextuplet is
and how to count various basic rhythms. I just want to see the
demonstration, the transcription as well as see the pattern slowed down
with a metronome in the background. After a bit of experimenting, I
arrived at this 7-step method of presenting my material and attempted
to create a system and course that I would want to follow. This is the
background and reasoning behind creating this course of 7-step video
lessons.
Content
There is a wide variety of content available online at the moment but the
area of ‘drum chops’ or ‘gospel chops’ is not particularly well covered.
Instead of creating a course for beginners on the development of chops
(that will probably come later), I decided to analyse and break down
some of the patterns that I actually use in my playing and create an
advanced course. I also decided to get creative and write new patterns
and linear sequences to push my own playing as well. I’m not the most
natural of players and rely more on a systematic approach to drumming.
I like to break patterns down into their simplest form and cut and paste
the ideas together into sequences. I like to see things written down and
when I started teaching, transcribing and writing music, I found that my
playing began to excel and I was able to improvise and create musical
ideas at a much higher level.
The chops, licks and fills presented in this course are nothing new or
special (I’m sure similar permutations have been played many times
before by players much more proficient than myself), but the
uniqueness lies in how the material it is organised and presented. My
aim is to present to you a variety of fun, challenging and inspiring linear
fills that you can copy, practice and internalise. After you have spent
enough time developing your technique and playing these fills, you
should be able to improvise freely and create your own patterns and
phrases.
The lessons in Section 1 of this course follow the same 7-step lesson
structure.
1. Demonstration
2. Breaking It Down – Phrasing Exercise
3. Putting It Together I – Triplet Combination Exercise
4. Putting it together II – Sextuplet Combination Exercise
5. Fill Applications I – 2 Beat Fills
6. Fill Applications II – 1 Bar Fills
7. The Finished Product
2. Breaking It Down – Phrasing Exercise
The featured Lick/Fill/Chop is then broken down into four
manageable phrases so it is easier to learn. It is further converted
into triplets and placed in an exercise with a one bar rest in
between each section. The phrasing exercises are played at 70
BPM. Example
Phrases 1-4 are then converted back into their original form as
sextuplets and placed into an exercise. Example
Phrases 1+2 and 3+4 are then combined into 1 Bar Sextuplet fills.
Example
1. Demonstration @ 95 BPM
2. Breaking It Down – Super Slow
3. Putting It Together – Sextuplet Combination Exercise @ 60 BPM
4. The Finished Product @ 95 BPM
Getting Started
You are now ready to start working your way through the lessons in this
course. You may find some of the Chops/Licks/Fills easier or more
difficult than others depending on your experience and prior knowledge.
Thank you for purchasing this product and may it bring you many hours
of inspiration and help you develop some serious chops.

Combination Fills
It’s time to get a little more creative and start to cut and paste, combine,
and arrange these phrases into your own Gospel Chop sequences. In the
following 5 lessons, you will see examples of fills that I have created by
combining 4 Phrases together from the Phrase Banks. All you need to do
now is pick out some phrases and arrange them in different sequences
to challenge yourself. Make sure you choose and select your phrases
carefully so you don’t create any awkward patterns like 3 or 4 right
hands, left hands or kicks in a row.

Shredding
Example Phrases 1-10
In this lesson you will see a collection of 10 Phrases that you can use as
‘go-to’ licks when you are improvising. These Phrases work well as
stand-alone fills on their own and sound great at high speeds.
Many of these phrases have been taken from the fills in the previous
section of the course and there are a few bonus phrases added in
towards the end. Practise these phrases over and over paying attention
to your dynamics and gradually increase the tempo.
Happy shredding!

Section 3
3 Piece Fills
3 Piece Fills
In the following Section, you will learn to play five 3 Piece Linear
Sextuplet Fills.
I created this section of the course to show that you don’t need to have a
large and extensive Drum Kit in front of you to showcase your chops. I
am finding that these days my gigging kit is getting smaller and smaller
and is often reduced to just 3 pieces. Playing with three pieces is of great
benefit because it makes you be more creative and forces you to make
the most of what you’ve got.
At this stage of the course you should be getting faster at decoding and
learning the Chop Sequences. The following 5 lessons are fast-tracked
lessons and only include 4 parts.

Conclusion
You’re at the end of this course now, but it’s really only the beginning
because there is a lot more work to do. You can always play these fills,
cleaner, faster and smoother and add new chops to your repertoire. I
hope you revisit this material over and over and have many hours of
enjoyable and challenging practise ahead. It is your job now to take
these ideas, make them your own, build upon them and work them into
your game.
Congratulations and thank you for completing this course! Stay tuned for
my next course Advanced 32nd note chops, which is coming soon. It was
a pleasure making this material for you.
Cheers!
