PROBLEMS

(MACHINE FOUNDATIONS)

Q.1 A concrete foundation is 8 ft in diameter. The foundation is supporting a machine. The

weight of the machine and the foundation is 60,000 lb. The machine imparts an
oscillating force Q = Qo sint. Given Qo = 6,000 lb (not frequency dependent);
operating frequency of 150 cpm: soil supporting the foundation with

Unit weight = 120 lb/ft3

Shear modulus = 6500 lb/in2
Poisson’s ratio = 0.3
Determine
a. The resonant frequency
b. The approximate amplitude of vibration at the operating frequency.

Q.2 Redo Problem 1 assuming the foundation to be 8ft  6ft in plan. Assume that the total
weight of the foundation and the machine is the same as in Problem 1.

Q.3 A concrete foundation supporting a machine is 3.5m  2.5m in plan and is subjected to
a sinusoidal oscillating force (vertical) having amplitude of 10 kN (not frequency
dependent). The operating frequency is 2000cpm. The weight of the machine and
foundation is 400 kN. Given the following soil properties:

Unit weight = 18 kN/m3

Shear modulus = 38,000 kN/m2
Poisson’s ratio = 0.25
Determine
a. The resonant frequency of the foundation
b. The amplitude of vibration at the operating frequency.

Q.4 Consider the case of a single cylinder reciprocating engine. For the engine:

Operating speed = 1000 cpm

Crank (r1) = 90 mm
Connecting rod (r2) = 350 mm
Weight of the engine = 20 kN
Reciprocating weight = 65 N

The engine is supported by a concrete foundation block (LBH) of 3m2m1.5m.

The properties of the soil supporting the foundation are as follows:

Unit weight = 19 kN/m3

G = 24,000 kN/m2
 = 0.25
Calculate
a. The resonant frequency
b. The amplitude of vibration at resonance.
c. Amplitude of vibration at operating frequency?
