Root House homestay is located in East Kaliurang, Yogyakarta with total


building area is 421 m2.The client named Ginarti Wijaya, a roots carver and
sculptor which creates many kind of crafts. Mrs. Ginarti lives with a husband
and one daugther in Depok where she has a house united with gallery and
factory.
The design concept is Eco-friendly with considering that Mrs. Ginarti has a very
simple and friendly character, and also loving nature (as evidenced by the use
of unused roots). This concept is applied to the selection of building materials
that are environmentally friendly, saving energy especially lighting and don’t
change the existing contours at all.
The shape of the design is simple, came from the shape of traditional house of
Indonesia which has sloping roof due to adaptating Indonesia’s climate, and
the construction of stilt house.Then, the shape is combinated with cube shape
(contemporary architecture) and become Root House. It also use carved roots
and woods as it facade and frames to representating owner’s proffesion.
This design has 3 masses (main house, gallery & guest house, and factory) and
two stories with special facility such as gallery, study room for carving, rooftop
garden, nature play, factory, and garden for owner searching inspiration.
Homestay is named Root House because in addition to the concept of eco-

friendly but also as a root of wonderful memories for owners and anyone who
visit this homestay. For creating those good memories, the design supports
several functions such as galleries that are attached to the study room to
carve, circulation and orientation which support interaction between visitors MASS 1 “MAIN HOUSE”
and owners, and nature play or playground that everyone could enjoy.
