Instructor Education
BBA. Information Systems – Georgia Southern University
MS. Computer Information Science - University of Phoenix Online
MS. Applied Computer Science – Kennesaw State University

This course is an overview of local-area and wide-area systems. Issues discussed include standards,
topologies, management, communication protocols, and security.
Purpose: To provide the student with expertise and hands on experience in implementing networks and data
communication systems. Programming and computer science no longer exist in the framework of single
system computing. Almost every application a student will experience professionally will be designed,
implemented and maintained in a networked multi-tiered system.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be capable of discussing and/or applying Networks and Data
Communications standards, issues, and methods in the following areas:
• Network Standards
• The OSI 7 Layer Model
• Local Area Networks (Ethernet and Wireless)
• Wide Area Networks
• Network Security
• Wireless Networks
• Network Management
• Network Applications

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• Critically analyze and compare system architectures and designs.
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of the fundamentals of data and telecommunications.
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of the OSI 7 Layer Model and how it articulates the process of data
communications.
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of the major communication standards effecting management,
administration, and implementation of data and telecommunication systems.
• Demonstrate improvement in their analytical and communication skills.
• Demonstrate all of the above via assignments and interactive discussions.

Students will demonstrate the above through their performance on the, Discussion Board participation
written exercise assignments, and one major project.

Prerequisite: CS 3323 or CS 3330.

The official bookstore for Troy University is Barnes and Noble (B&N). Students can now order textbooks
within Canvas, Trojan Web Express or on the B&N website at http://shoptroytrojans.com/
(http://shoptroytrojans.com) . For further instructions on how to order your course materials go to “How to
Order Textbooks”. Students should have their textbook by the first week of class. Not having your textbook is
not an acceptable excuse for late work.

In addition to interaction via Canvas and email contact, you are required to contact the instructor via email or
telephone by the first day of the term for an initial briefing. Although physical class meetings are not part of
this course, participation in all interactive, learning activities is required.

Make-Up Work Policy

Missing any part of this schedule may prevent completion of the course. If you foresee difficulty of any type
(e.g., an illness, employment change, etc.) which may prevent completion of this course, notify the instructor
as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in failure for an assignment and/or failure of the course. If I
have not heard from you by the deadline dates for assignments, exams, or forums, no make-up work will be
allowed (unless extraordinary circumstances exist, such as hospitalization). Requests for extensions must be
made in advance and accompanied by appropriate written documentation. “Computer problems” is not an
acceptable excuse.

Examination Schedule and Instructions

This course requires one proctored exam. The dates of this exam are March 4 - 8:00 A.M. CST –
March 8 - 11:55 P.M. CST. Students will be responsible for working with Troy Online Undergraduate
Testing to arrange for a proctor. All necessary instructions and information can be found under the
“Tech/Proctor Info” button in Blackboard and also at www.troy.edu/ecampus/testing/ . Questions
about proctoring should be directed to Troy Online: www.troy.edu/ecampus/testing/contactus.htm .
