PROJECT BRIEF.
In Kenya, the demand for ballast has sharply increased due to an increase in the development of r
oads and buildings in line with the government Big 4 agenda. This has led to a strain in the suppl
y of natural resource aggregates and most quarries being depleted.
Current practice in road construction in Kenya has led to environmental degradation with the top
asphalt concrete layer of some existing roads undergoing reconstruction being removed, and disp
osed in open spaces. Aggregates obtained when existing road surface is scarified can be recycled
and repurposed for use in construction of the asphalt concrete layer of low volume sealed roads.
The Reclaimed Asphalt Concrete (RAC) is mixed with virgin aggregates, bitumen and hydrated l
ime rejuvenator to achieve a pavement that has significantly less moisture susceptibility, aging, s
tripping, rutting, and fatigue. The project is to focus more on the benefits imparted in terms of fat
igue resistance, anti-rutting and moisture susceptibility as most common failure modes can be att
ributed to them.
Use of Reclaimed Asphalt Concrete (RAC) has become common practice in many countries larg
ely in part as an alternative and sustainable means of pavement construction due to dramatic incr
ease in asphalt binder cost, dwindling budgets and growing traffic loads.
