About Oana Lianu

Oana Lianu was born on March 7th, 1976, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. At the
age of 6 Oana started taking piano lessons and at the age of 13 the panpipe came
into her life; her great merit is to have taught herself to play this instrument. Two
years later Oana is called The child prodigy of the Panpipe, in France. Oana Lianu
graduated “George Dima” Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, the Department of
Music Pedagogy. In 1999, her graduation year, the Senate of the Music Academy
awarded her The George Dima Anniversary Medal for her great results.
At the age of 35 the artist makes a sensational discovery, her own voice. The
very unique voice of Oana Lianu, covering over 3 octaves, has now become her main
instrument, and the remarkable asset is her huge ease of performing the most
diverse musical genres – jazz-café, musical, Chansonettes, Italian canzonetta,
Romanian folk music, Christmas carols. The sensational combination of her voice
with Panflute creates a formidable duo, together with all the other instruments that
Oana Lianu skillfully masters: Panpipe, (Tudor Jarda, one of the greatest Romanian
contemporary composer, appreciated Oana’s panpipe vibrates, touching perfection),
piano, different kinds of pipes, Shepherd pipe, Romanian ocarina, Romanian
tilinica, Jew's harp, bagpipe. Oana Lianu was awarded over 20 prizes, distinctions,
trophies. She released five audio personal recordings: Romanian Jewelry,
Transylvanian Songs, Classical Jewelry, Christmas concert, Just love and one DVD
Oana Lianu – The Princess of Panpipe.
Concomitant with her impressive artistic career, Oana Lianu excels in the
academic career. At the age of 29 Oana Lianu was awarded a PhD in Music (Magna
cum laude). Her dissertation “The Panpipe between Tradition and Modernism” was
the first dissertation in the world to treat the panpipe under all its aspects,
theoretical and practical, at the highest level. Associate Professor PhD, member of
academic committees, Oana Lianu is invited as an artist and as a professor to give
presentations at the national and international music conferences and symposiums.
Her three books: The Panpipe between Tradition and Modernism, Method for
Panpipe, and Romanian Musical Folklore, together with other numerous
publications, are a very valuable reference musical material at the world music
level.
