1 INTRODUCTION
NEDAP WinGate is software application for handling access control authorizations. NEDAP WinGate
communicates directly with NEDAP TRANSIT extended readers without the intervention of a multidrop master.
In fact NEDAP WinGate is the multidrop master. Up to 32 TRANSIT extended readers may be connected.
1.1 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

• Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista
• Unused serial port
• TRANSIT extended (or compatible) reader

2 HARDWARE INSTALLATION
In this chapter the communication interface connection is described. For details about connecting power-
supply, antenna and other I/O, refer to the installation manual of your reader.
It is only possible to connect readers that support the NEDAP APM/APN multidrop communication protocol. This
means that a TRANSIT standard cannot be connected to Wingate as described in chapter 2.1. It is required that
at least a TRANSIT extended reader is used.
2.1 CONNECTING ONE READER

When only one reader is used, it is possible to use an RS232 communication board in the reader. The RS232
interface on this board can be directly connected to the serial port on the PC. When the reader is equipped with
a MD300 multidrop communication board refer to chapter 2.2 for more details about the wiring.

2.2 CONNECTING MORE READERS

When more readers are used, it is required that the readers are equipped with a MD300 multidrop
communication board. Use an RS232/RS422 converter to connect the multidrop interface to your RS232 serial
port. Nedap recommends the RS232/RS422 optical `isolator (art. no. IC457A-F) from BlackBox Corporation. This
converter can also be ordered at Nedap (art. no. 9880860).

3 CONFIGURING
It is necessary that communication and hardware configuration is correctly setup.
3.1 SETUP COMMUNICATION
3.1.1 SETUP SERIAL PORT

Click 'Options', 'Setup communication' to enter the setup communication dialog window.

Default baudrate, databits, parity and stopbits are: 9600, 7, even, 2.

3.1.2 SETUP HARDWARE CONFIGURATION

Click 'Options', 'Setup hardware configuration' to enter the hardware configuration dialog window.

Select in the dialog window the number of readers that are connected. All connected readers must be TRANSIT
extended (or compatible) readers. A maximum of 32 readers may be connected. The connected readers must
have addresses starting from 0 through (total-number-of-readers) minus 1, leaving no blanks. The physical
position within the multidrop loop is unimportant. For example when 5 readers are connected they must have
the addresses 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4.
The table below shows how to setup the addresses of a TRANSIT extended reader.

3.2 SETUP READER
3.2.1 READER SETTINGS

Click 'Readers', 'Settings' to enter the reader settings dialog window.

Reader info
Here the reader number is linked to a more meaningful name. The alias and the description are stored locally on
the PC.
Lock control
'Unlock time' is the number of seconds that the relay is activated upon detection of an authorized tag.
'Open too long time' is the number of seconds that must have expired before a door-open-too-long message is
generated. The reader uses the door contact to determine whether the door is open or closed.
'Automatic unlock' enables you to specify a period of time that the door is unlocked. E.g. the main entrance may
be automatically unlocked from 8:00 until 17:00 from Monday to Friday.
'Block identical tags' will block an authorized tag when identified a second time within the period of 'time' ×
'factor' seconds.
Parameters
'Messages' enable the messages you like to receive from the selected reader.
'Authorization mode'. Normal means that only authorized tags are granted access. The authorization mode can
also be (temporarily) set to nobody or everybody. When everybody is selected, every identified tag is granted
access.

3.2.2 DATE AND TIME

To view the date and time within the reader and to set the correct time on the reader click 'Readers', 'Date/Time'.

The dialog shows the current time on the PC and the time in the reader(s).
Click 'Refresh' to reload the date and time from the reader(s).
Click 'Set' to write the current PC date and time to all configured readers.

3.3 SETUP AUTHORIZATION
3.3.1 DAYZONES
Dayzones are programmable combinations of weekdays on which authorizations can apply.
Click 'Readers', Dayzones' to enter the dayzones dialog window.

There are 14 free programmable dayzones and 2 predefined dayzones. When entering the dayzones dialog
window the current dayzones settings are retrieved from the reader(s).
Changed settings are stored in all configured readers by clicking the OK button.

3.3.2 TIMEZONES
Timezones are programmable time windows within the day on which authorizations can apply.
Click 'Readers', 'Timezones' to enter the timezones dialog window.

There are 14 free programmable timezones and 2 predefined timezones. The current timezone settings are
retrieved from the reader upon entering this dialog.
Enter one or two periods per day and select if 'valid-on-holidays' applies to the timezone. See also chapter 3.3.3.
Changed settings are stored in all configured readers by clicking the OK button.

3.3.3 HOLIDAYS
Click 'Readers', 'Holidays' to enter the holidays dialog window. The current holiday settings are retrieved from
the reader upon entering this dialog.

It is possible to define up to 3 holiday dates. These holidays are treated as special dates on which a tag is only
authorized if the 'valid-on-holidays' option is enabled. See also chapter 3.3.2.
When more than 3 holidays are required enter the first three upcoming dates and reprogram when one or more
dates have passed.

4 AUTHORIZING
The number of tags that can be authorized is limited only by the amount of memory placed inside the reader.
The TRANSIT extended reader is shipped with enough memory to authorize 1000 tags.
4.1 ASSOCIATE TAG

NEDAP WinGate allows you to associate a tag number with a person, vehicle or other identifiable object. Click
'Tags', 'Associate tag' to enter the associate dialog window.

To associate a tag, with for example a person, you first enter the tag number in the tag number field. Then enter
the name of that person in the Alias field. The Alias is globally used in WinGate for referencing tags.
The group field can be used to categorize tags. For example persons can be categorized in employees, visitors
etc. Enter a new group in the group field or select it from the existing groups' list. The group field is optional, but
when filled in, let's you easily authorize or deauthorize all members of a group.
The extra-info field can optionally be used to add any extra information about the tag that could not be
specified earlier. See chapter 5.2.2 for details about where and how this information is stored.

4.2 AUTHORIZE TAG

Click 'Tags', 'Authorize' to enter the authorize dialog window.

To authorize a tag within the system you need to answer the questions: who?, where? and when?
The authorizations are immediately updated in the reader(s) when applied with the OK button.
Who
Specify who is authorized by tag number (range), by alias(es) or by group(s).
Where
Select the readers to which the tag should be authorized.
When
Select on which day-, and timezone the tag is authorized. Two day-, and timezone combinations per reader per
tag can be selected. When only one day-, and timezone combination is sufficient, set Dayzone 2 to Never and
Timezone 2 to Never.
4.3 DEAUTHORIZE TAG

Click 'Tags', 'Deauthorize' to enter the deauthorize dialog window.
To deauthorize a tag within the system you need to answer the questions: who? and where?
The authorizations are immediately updated in the reader(s) when applied with the OK button.

4.4 COPY AUTHORIZATIONS BETWEEN READERS

It may be very useful, when replacing a reader or when placing a new reader in the multidrop loop, to copy all
authorizations from one reader to another. In order to accomplish this click 'Tags', 'Copy authorizations'.

Select source reader, destination reader and click 'Copy'.

In the figure above the authorization from reader 1 are copied into reader 3.
4.5 CHECK AUTHORIZATIONS

Click 'Tags', 'Check authorizations' to enter the check authorization dialog window.
Select who and where before clicking the 'Check' button.

When the 'Check' button is clicked the authorizations are requested from the readers and a report appears in
which the authorizations are shown.

4.6 REVIEW EVENTS AND ALARMS

Events are stored inside the reader(s) until NEDAP WinGate retrieves them. The reader has a limited sized buffer
to store the events. Once events are retrieved they are erased from the reader's event buffer. To review the
events stored inside a reader (or the readers) click 'File', 'Events'.

5 ADVANCED OPTIONS
Understanding the options explained in this chapter is not required to use NEDAP WinGate. It is assumed that
the basic functionality's of NEDAP WinGate are clear before reading this chapter.
5.1 USING THE MULTI-LANGUAGE USER INTERFACE

NEDAP WinGate has a multi-language user-interface. This ensures a user-friendly interface for anyone.
5.1.1 SELECT LANGUAGE

Select your language from the 'Options', 'Language' menu. When your language is not available contact NEDAP
or add it yourself. See also chapter 5.1.2.
5.1.2 ADD NEW LANGUAGE

When clicking 'Options', 'Language', and 'New' you will be asked to enter the name of the new language. Enter
here for example Deutsch and click 'OK'.
The new language will automatically be selected and all texts will get a prefix 'XXX '. This prefix indicates text
that hasn't been translated yet. To translate text refer to chapter 5.1.3.
5.1.3 TRANSLATE DIALOG

NEDAP WinGate has a built-in language editor that allows you to translate dialog windows. When translating the
complete user-interface first add a new language in order to prevent the current language to be overwritten.
See chapter 5.1.2.
The built-in language editor can be entered by right-clicking the dialog and select 'Translate form'.

Some language files contain a 'STRINGSECTION' section. When translating text that is in this section, it may not
be applied until you restart NEDAP WinGate.

5.2 INSIDE THE USED FILES
5.2.1 INIFILE
The inifile is used to store some of NEDAP WinGate settings that cannot be stored inside the reader. The inifile is
only read once at start-up of NEDAP WinGate. The contents of the inifile will be described below by means of an
example.

5.2.2 DATA FILES

The data files are used to store additional information. They are not required to operate NEDAP WinGate. This is
the reason why they aren't included in the installation.
The data files are stored in a subdirectory data\ in the directory where NEDAP WinGate is installed.
All data files are in the CSV file format. CSV files are normal ASCII files, which can be edited with any normal text
editor like notepad.exe. Normally you will not change these files manually because NEDAP WinGate allows you
to edit the contents in a far more user-friendly way.
The file readers.txt is used to store the reader information. See chapter 3.2.1. The reader information is split up
into three fields: Reader number, Alias and Description.
The file dayzones.txt file is used to store the dayzone descriptions. See chapter 3.3.1. The dayzones descriptions
are split up into two fields: Dayzone number and Description.
The file timezones.txt file is used to store the timezone descriptions. See chapter 3.3.2. The timezones
descriptions are split up into two fields: Timezone number and Description.
The file persons.txt file is used to store the associations. See chapter 4.1. An association is split up into four fields:
Tag number, Alias, Group and Extra information.

5.2.3 LANGUAGE FILES

The language files are used to store language specific information. For every installed language there is a
subdirectory language\<lngname>\ in the directory where NEDAP WinGate is installed.
Language files are actually inifiles with the extension .lng. They can be edited (or printed) with any normal text
editor like notepad.exe. Normally you will not change these files manually because NEDAP WinGate allows you
to view and edit its contents in a far more user-friendly way. See chapter 5.1.
5.2.4 EVENT FILES

The event files are stored in the subdirectory events\ in the directory where NEDAP WinGate is installed. The
filename is E_yyyymmdd.log. The event files are in the CSV file format. The event information is split up into nine
fields.
