ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Enhancements Overview

This release of ANSYS SpaceClaim focuses on automation through scripting. With this first official release
of ANSYS SpaceClaim scripting, you can record, edit, and play back scripts from within the ANSYS
SpaceClaim interface, making the automation of repetitive tasks simple and easy. Better still, any
dimensional input to a script can be published as a driving dimension, allowing you to create complex,
parametric geometry. In addition, we have made improvements to ways you can prepare your models
for simulation and other downstream applications.

These improvements seek to make modeling faster and easier than ever before, so that you can spend
more time exploring ideas and less time modeling them.

New capabilities in ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 include:

 Scripting – First official release that includes a comprehensive editor panel, and robust smart
objects for replaying scripts on changed or modified geometry. New Publish Script allows you to
promote a script to a button in the SC ribbon for easy access. Scripting is one of the best tools
you can use to bring automation and time savings to any repeatable task.
 Chamfers – Stop Chamfers allows you to mimic the effect of an angled cutting tool as it rotates
and comes-to-a-stop in the middle of an edge. This feature allows you to represent real world
geometry for manufacturing.
 Facets – New tools have been added for better preparing models for additive manufacturing. A
new or improved Cavities, Sharp Edges, and Overhang tools allow analyzing models for
printability. New Lattice infills have also been added, increasing your options for generating stiff
but lightweight internal part structures. In addition, new tools for selecting and modifying
selections with facets make it easier than ever to work with any facet geometry.
 Sheet Metal – Panel Bends and Sheet Annotations make working with sheet metal easier and
more intuitive.
 UI-Graphics – The user-interface has been updated to add support for 4K monitors.
 SCDM – Tools for creating Icepak fans, grilles, and openings have been added for SCDM
customers. Shared Topology tools have been added for preparing models for downstream
simulation using ANSYS.

o Note: This user interface is temporary.
9. Now you can run the script in any model

Core
Chamfers:

Stop Chamfers have conical stop faces that mimic the effect of an angled cutting tool rotating and
coming-to-a-stop in the middle of an edge.

With an edge selected, when you click the Chamfer option in the Pull tool, the edge ends switch to
yellow cones that can be dragged. This is like the Pull Edge user-interface in Sheet Metal and sets the
point where the simulated cutter will stop.

Notice the conical stop face created

at the chamfer’s end.

You can move both ends to create stop faces at both ends of the chamfer.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 3
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Reverse Chamfer Stop has been added to

Chamfer options. This flips the ‘direction’
of the conical Stop Face.

Here it is ‘reversed’ or flipped 90°.

An Apex offset input box has been added to Chamfer options to offset the cone apex (the lowest point
of the cone) past the furthest extent of the intersection of the virtual cutter with the material.

Apex offset = 0

Apex offset = 1

Apex offset = 2

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 5
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

For circular edges, you will see a linear dimension when

you set the extent of the chamfer. The linear dimension in
the image refers to the arc length of the un-chamfered
part of the original edge.

Move in Sketch:

You can now snap the Move Handle Anchor to circle quadrants and tangents.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 6
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Support Files Search Paths, defined in SpaceClaim Options, are now used when searching for models
required by assemblies. This situation occurs, for example, when external components are moved to a
different directory. Previously, they were only used to search for library items such as formats and
tables.

Facets
The Facets ribbon has a new overall group and icon layout.

Sharp Edges Tool:

A new Sharp Edges tool icon has been added to the Inspect group of the Facets ribbon. This tool
differs from the existing Fix Sharps tool because it works on Faceted and Solid bodies. It also only
identifies sharp edges, but does not fix them.

To find sharp edges:

1. Click the Sharps tool.
2. Based on the options settings, any found sharp edges are highlighted.

Options:
The following options are available for finding Sharp Edges:
 Max edge angle - This applies to the angle between normals of faces that share an edge. Any
edges with an edge angle greater than the specified angle will be found.
 Convex - Convex sharps are found. These are sharps that point outward.
 Concave - Concave sharps are found. These are sharps that point inward.

Skin Surface:

Performance has been improved for Skin Surfaces on very large (dimensionally) facet meshes (> 10,000
meters).

Facet Selection:

You can now Power Select Faceted Bodies by Color.

Three new tools have been added to the Select group.

 Expand
 Shrink
 Fill

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 9
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Expand Tool:

Expand adds an additional row of facets around the current selection. You can click Expand multiple
times to continue to expand the selection by one row of triangles.

Facet Edges can be Expanded to touching triangles.

Facet Vertices can also be Expanded to touching triangles.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 10
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Shrink Tool:

Shrink reduces the current selection by one row of facets. You can click Shrink multiple times to shrink
the selection by one row each time.

Fill Tool:

Fill selects all remaining facets that are bounded by the current selection.

If the Fill adds less than five facets, a warning is issued.

Only Expand is enabled if the current selection is a single facet or multiple, Ctrl-selected facets.

All three tools are enabled if Box, Lasso, or Paint was used for the current selection.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 11
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Double-Click Selection:

A slider has been added to double-click facet selection. Use the slider to adjust the initial selection.

Move the slider to adjust the initial selection.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 12
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

The selected facets can be added to a Group.

The slider is dismissed after a triple-click on the facets.

Overhang tool:

The Overhang tool now works for solid bodies.

A flip-able arrow has been added to change the

direction used for looking for overhangs.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 13
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

The Select Direction tool guide has been added for selecting solid or facet edges to set the
direction for looking for overhangs. ALT-select also works for selecting a direction.

Ignore Small Areas has been added to the Overhang tool

options.

The tool will ignore overhangs with areas smaller than the
value you enter.

In the example below, there is a small overhang with an area of 20 mm2. It is found when Ignore Small
Areas is checked OFF but is ignored when the option is checked ON and set to 30 mm2.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 14
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Cavity tool:

The Cavity tool has been added to the Inspect group in the Facets ribbon. It finds cavities that are
completely enclosed inside faceted bodies. It’s important to identify cavities because they can trap
excess 3D printer material.

The Cavity tool works on both faceted and solid bodies.

The images below show a simple example. The solid body on the left is a shelled block, the faceted body
in the middle is shelled with a Basic Hex Infill, and the solid body on the right is shelled with a 1mm
diameter hole through the top and bottom walls. A clipping plane is used to show the interior details.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 15
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

The first solid body has one cavity.

The faceted body has 42 cavities due to the Hex Infill.

The solid body on the left has a through hole so no cavities are
found. However, the through hole is small (1mm) and small
openings can cause problems for draining the excess material. To
address small openings, the tool has a Max Opening option. If we
enter “1” for a Max Opening, one cavity is found and the small
openings are highlighted in red.

Gyroid Infill:

Gyroid Faceted Lattice (Beta), Schwarz P Faceted Lattice (Beta), and Schwarz D Faceted Lattice (Beta)
infills have been added.

The Gyroid belongs to a group of Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces. They occur in nature and are of
interest in architecture, design, and art. Surfaces being incorporated into Infill are based on Schwarz
Minimal Surfaces. So far the following types have been implemented.
 Gyroid Faceted Lattice (Beta)

 Schwarz P Faceted Lattice (Beta)

4. Pull to create the bend

Panel Bends Unfold (though in a highly non-linear way, as is obvious from the pictures below.) Think of
it like “one or more of these unfold areas will undergo unpredictable stretching/tearing.”

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 20
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Because of the highly non-linear way Panel Bends unfold, they have a
Flat Length property. Select the bend and edit the Flat Length to match
your manufacturing results.

You can also edit the Height property to change the height of the bend
in 3D.

Panel Bends have been added to the

Colors section of Sheet Metal options in
SpaceClaim Options.

Bend Annotations:

Bend Annotations have been added to the Sheet Metal page of

SpaceClaim Options.

There are four formats for displaying the bends. Images follow
showing the differences for the simple model below.

Make sure that the Bend Dimensions layer is Shown.

UI/Graphics
Renderer:

Direct3D11 is now the default renderer. Direct3D9 can still be chosen (as well as OpenGL and WARP). If
Direct3D11 is not available, Direct3D9 is the default renderer.

Views:

Clicking on the Name column header in the Views panel now toggles through Ascending, Descending,
and back to User Defined order.

Now, you can select a view and click Enter to snap to the view. Double-click still snaps to the view as
well.

ANSYS SpaceClaim Ribbon:

The fundamental ANSYS SpaceClaim ribbon tabs have been re-ordered for standalone ANSYS
SpaceClaim, SCDM, and AIM. The Sheet Metal and Facets tabs have shifted left from their previous
locations.

4K Screen Support:

ANSYS SpaceClaim Graphics has been updated to support 4K screens.

Popular Commands List:

A separate Popular Commands list has been added to the Command dropdown in the New Command
Shortcut dialog (SpaceClaim Options > Customize > Shortcuts). There are now two expandable lists,
Popular Commands and Ribbon Commands.

Structure Tree:

The following Structure Tree and graphics area right-mouse button commands have been removed from
standalone ANSYS SpaceClaim.

 Right-mouse button click > Suppress for Physics

 Right-mouse button click > Activate for Physics

These are now only tied to ANSYS licenses and the presence of loaded/active ANSYS Workbench plugins.

For ANSYS licenses and loaded/active Workbench plugins, the following right-mouse button click
commands have been added in the Structure Tree and Graphics area.

 Right-mouse button click > Hide All Suppressed

 Right-mouse button click > Show All Suppressed

Since Suppress for Physics has been removed from standalone ANSYS SpaceClaim, the Suppress for
Physics attribute is no longer applied to Hidden objects upon scdoc retrieval in that product.

SCDM
The Icepak group and other Workbench controls have been moved into a new Workbench tab.

NOTE: Tab is NOT available in ANSYS SpaceClaim embedded in AIM.

Icepak:

A new Fan tool has been added.

This tool has two modes. One functions like the Midsurface tool, in that pairs of coaxial and opposite-
facing faces are Ctrl-selected. On the second selection, the fan is created. In the second mode, either
the hub (inside) or shroud (outside) face is selected and then the Complete tool guide is clicked to
create the fan.

Select Hub Ctrl-Select Shroud

Fan created automatically

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 28
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Alternatively, one or the other of the faces can be

selected and then you can Complete the tool and the
other face (size) is assumed by rule, and then a fan is
made. This allows for very fast and repeated Fan
creation.

Select Hub

Click Complete

Further – as with other Icepak simplification tools – as fans are created using this user-interface, the
original geometry is deleted (by design) and replaced with simplified (and Icepak-designated) simpler
bodies, so it is easy for you to see which (of many) fans have been converted.

Icepak Body Properties have been added to the Properties panel.

These are read-only and include the sizes of the fans as determined by
the geometry or rule.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 29
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Fan-specific properties, including Height, have been added to the Properties panel for Icepak bodies.

Openings:

A new Openings tool has been added. It creates a surface body to represent an opening in a body.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 30
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes
In the example on the right, there is a rectangular cut through the block and a cylindrical hole partially
through the block.

Select a face with an opening and the tool automatically

creates the surface.

After selecting both the top and the front face, two
openings are created.

Grilles:

The Grille tool has been added to the Icepak group in the Workbench tab. It creates an Icepak Grille
on a selected face.

There are several Grille types available in in the Options panel.

 Rectangular
 Circular
 Polygonal
 Inclined Rectangular

A simple Rectangular example is shown below.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 31
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

The block has three holes that will be part of the Grille.

These holes are ANSYS SpaceClaim geometry, but they

could have previously been converted to Icepak
Openings using the Opening tool .

To create a Rectangular Grille

1. Click the Grille tool

2. Choose Rectangular in the Options panel

3. By default, the Select Opening Bodies tool guide is active

4. Click the Select Face tool guide to select the face on

which to create the Grille

5. Select the face on which to create the Grille

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 32
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

6. Click Complete to create the Grille

In the image below, the Grille is selected to highlight it.

Follow the same process to create a Circular Grille.

Polygonal Grilles require an extra step to select a body to serve as the polygonal grille shape.

To create a Polygonal Grille

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 33
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes
1. Click the Grille tool
2. Choose Polygonal in the Options panel

3. By default, the Select Opening Bodies tool guide is active

4. Click the Select Face tool guide to select the face on

which to create the Grille

5. Select the face on which to create the Grille

6. The Select Polygon tool guide activates

7. Select a body to serve as the polygon

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 34

8. Click Complete to create the Grille

The polygonal shape can also be projected onto curved

surfaces.

Inclined Grilles are also supported for surface bodies. Inclined means that the openings are not aligned
with the axes of the World Origin. The workflow is the same as for Rectangular Grilles. The following
example shows openings aligned with the World Origin Z-axis.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 35

Shared Topology:

Shared Topology has been moved into a

set of tools in the new Workbench tab.

These tools replace the previous way of adding shared topology through document properties.

SharePrep

The SharePrep tool performs two functions. First, it will upgrade legacy scdoc files from the previous
shared topology to the new one. Second, it can be used to resolve intersections among bodies before
applying shared topology.

If a model has been loaded in which shared topology was declared in the assembly structure, but which
has not been upgraded to the new shared topology tool, then SharePrep will be the only choice initially
in the Sharing ribbon group.

Upon clicking the SharePrep tool, ANSYS SpaceClaim will search the assembly structure for shared
topology and apply it to the model. A summary of the result will be displayed in the status bar. At this
point, the remaining items from the Sharing ribbon group will become active.

Share

The Share tool will identify and share topology among the bodies in the model. When the tool is first
activated, it will search the visible bodies in the model for sharing opportunities. It does this by
imprinting the bodies with each other. Potential topologies to be shared are shown in red.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 37
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

At this point the you may select individual candidates in the graphics window to apply topology sharing,
choose topologies to exclude from the operation by clicking the Exclude Problem tool guide, or apply
topology sharing to all remaining candidates by clicking the Complete button. When topology sharing is
applied, the display for shared edges and vertices (if applicable) will automatically be turned on.

Example:

Specific topologies are shared by selecting candidates in red:

Topologies are chosen for exclusion, which will then appear in

green:

Remaining candidates are shared after selecting the Complete

button:

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 38
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes
Unshare

You may choose to unshare topologies. Simply select the entities in the graphics area which are to be
unshared. The selection filter will allow selection of entity already shared. While this tool is active, the
shared faces display will be enabled.

Additionally, the Handle children checkbox may be used to easily

unshare any lower topological entities also involved in sharing

Example:

Initial Model:

Selection:

Result, with Handle children checkbox off. Only the face is

unshared, while the boundary edges remain connected:

Result, with Handle children checkbox on. The face and its
boundary edges are unshared:

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 39
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

The Unshare tool will behave differently depending on the type of topology selected:

 Faces – Will remove any topology sharing from the face. If the handle children checkbox is
checked, any shared edges belonging to the face will also be unshared.
 Edges – Will remove any topology sharing from the edge and faces adjacent to the edge, since
face sharing requires that all its edges also be shared. If the handle children checkbox is
checked, any shared vertices belonging to the edge will also be unshared.
 Vertices – When selecting a vertex, ANSYS SpaceClaim will also highlight the edge associated
with that vertex. Clicking that vertex will remove only the vertex associated with that edge from
the set. Any other vertices shared at that intersection will remain. To remove all vertex sharing
at a location, use box select around the vertex.

To unshare all entities from the visible bodies, box select everything.

View Assembly Structure

The View Assembly Structure tool allows you to see how the assembly will appear when transferred
downstream to ANSYS Workbench. When transferred, the assembly may be structured differently
because bodies sharing topology must belong to the same part to be meshed conformally. When bodies
share topology, ANSYS SpaceClaim will group them by their nearest common parent component. If no
common parent component among the shared bodies exists, then the entire assembly will be
transferred as a single multi-body part.

Example:

For this model structure, bodies B and C shared

topology with each other and bodies E and F also
share topology with each other.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 40
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

The transferred assembly shown by the View Assembly Structure tool appears below. Because bodies B
and C share topology and they do not belong to the same component, they must be grouped into the
same part at their nearest common parent, which is SubAssembly1. This pulls in other bodies into the
multi-body part which do not participate in sharing, such as body G. Bodies E and F are already
contained in the same component, so they would transfer under Component3 as a multi-body part.

A new color scheme has been implemented when

displaying connections in the Share tools, in
SpaceClaim Options. It mimics the Workbench and
DesignModeler conventions for showing the number
of connections that edges, faces, and vertices are
experiencing when detected.

The Not Shared Multiple Edge setting helps to

identify edges by seeing shared and unshared edges.

When you change a Shared Topology color setting,

the default scheme will automatically switch to
Custom and you can change between two schemes,
Default and Custom.

Converter
When ANSYS SpaceClaim is started from Converter, there is no longer a check for updates in ANSYS
SpaceClaim as it runs.

Multiprocessor support has been added, allowing multiple ANSYS SpaceClaim sessions running in
parallel to translate files. You can configure the number of sessions in Converter Options. Be careful not
to exceed the number of cores present, and to expect performance of other running programs to
potentially degrade.

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 43
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

Known Limitations

1. Because of a significant defect documented in Microsoft's KB3065367, any Windows system running
.NET Framework 4.6.0 should be updated to .NET Framework 4.6.1 prior to running ANSYS
SpaceClaim Direct Modeler.
2. When Creating a Keyshot model from within ANSYS SpaceClaim with the top view direction set to Y,
the resulting model in Keyshot may not be centered in the Keyshot window. To work-around this
issue, change the Top view direction to Z (ANSYS SpaceClaim Default) in File > SpaceClaim Options >
Advanced.
3. Merge faces for a specific model incorrectly changes volume. The known relative accuracy reported
by mass properties may be incorrect in some very specific cases.
4. There may be a difference in mass properties values when comparing a part that is split to a part
that is whole. The known relative accuracy reported by mass properties may be incorrect in some
very specific cases.
5. Deviation results may be exaggerated in some cases.
6. Limitations exist with chamfers with conical stops:
o Only chamfers of 45-degrees can be created with conical stops. Regular chamfers can be
modified with additional pull arrows, mini toolbar "Distance-Distance," and "Distance-
Angle" methods.
o Modification of a Chamfer is not possible without disturbing conical stops, which is not
consistent with conical stops.
7. For network installation of ANSYS, SCDM .chm help shows blank pages unless the following registry
variable is included:

OS: Win 10:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions]

Add "MaxAllowedZone" DWORD under ItssRestrictions and set to =1.

Note: Add ItssRestrictions "key" under 1.x if not available.

8. Windows 10 version 1703 is currently not supported and may cause unexpected behavior for
some tools. The problem has been observed in the Move tool but may occur in other tools. If
you are using Windows 10 version 1703 and experience a problem with the Move tool, use the
following workaround.

In the SpaceClaim installation directory, make a backup copy of the following file, which is an
XML file

SpaceClaim.exe.config

Edit the file by adding the following line to the beginning of the <runtime> section:

<useLegacyJit enabled="1" />

The <runtime> section should now read as follows:

www.SpaceClaim.com Page 44
ANSYS SpaceClaim 2017.1 Release Notes

<runtime>
<useLegacyJit enabled="1" />
<legacyCorruptedStateExceptionsPolicy enabled="true"/>
<loadFromRemoteSources enabled="true"/>

Save the file and restart SpaceClaim. The problem should no longer occur.
