Paper #2: Task Environment
Prof. Jesuś Hernandez
As I have understood what the “Core” of Wayne State has been sense its founding; I must
now look at how it operates to keep the core the priority as well as produce the output desired
from the university. The core of the institution validates the legitimacy of the college and
typically where Wayne States Power is held. Wayne state has changed drastically over time and
it can appear that the powers are shifting in the public eye, but the value of the institution is in
their outputs. The output that Wayne State is trying to provide to the Detroit area and the world,
are health science professional. Doing practical work and creating research to teach all other
institutions. They are here to provide life-saving research and health benefits to the urban
community of Detroit. They are a premier urban research University and the only one in the state
of Michigan.
Wayne State takes pride what they provide students to be successful in pursuing Medical
School. They offer different Master programs to help boost student’s chances who might have
not had the best grades in undergrad. Wayne State is home to the only National Institutes of
Health branch dedicated to the study of premature birth and infant mortality (Wayne State,
2018). Starting in 2002, the Perinatology Research Branch (PRB) moved to Detroit and has
produced lifesaving research, cared for more than 20,000 at-risk mothers, contributed more than
$350 million to Michigan's economy, and employed more than 130 physicians, researchers and
staff members (Wayne State, 2018). It is estimated that more than 40% of Detroit’s Doctors and
med major (not a real major), the School of Medicines offers Undergraduate Medical Education.
The purpose of the program is to educate physicians to provide compassionate, leading-edge care
to the citizens of Michigan (Wayne State, 2018). The school strives to create an outstanding
learning environment. They provide undergraduates medical student with a curriculum that is
comprised of 6 competencies that align with the core competencies of the graduate medical
education programs. Their goal is to provide services to faculty and students to enhance the
curriculum and the learning experience including standardized patient and clinical simulation
programs (Wayne State, 2018). Their programs are not just about books and lectures; but instead
it is about allowing practical research and support student learning to be ready for medical
school.
The Medical School offers a medical education support group to provide students
information for success in the curriculum. Each of the health science programs at the college,
such as: School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, and School of Medicine; has their own office
of student’s affair where students can request tutors, meeting with success coaches, meeting
academic advisors, and assistance with financial emergency. Each school has a plethora of
resources for their students within their building for students’ easy access and willingness to
utilize the resources made available. In addition to what they provide just their health sciences
students, they also have an academic success center for all students.
The Academic Success Center provides students the ability to utilize first year seminars,
math literacy workshops, student success workshops, peer assisted learning, and a host other
programs for student success. Students are encouraged to utilize these resources early and often
to live up to the mission of the office. As stated before, to help with student’s post-graduate
opportunities, Wayne State provides students with resources on how to make them more
competitive for medical school admissions. The provide students with information for if they
have weaker GPA’s to get a Masters in Basic Medicine, Masters of Physiology Program, as well
as offering program suggestions at other institutions like the University of Michigan and
Lawrence Tech. Wayne State also gives advice for students who have strong GPA’s but with
little math on how to submit a successful application for medical school. The Pre-Medical and
Health Science Center offers students resource access to gain overrides and also appointments to
review transcripts to ensure students are on the right path to their goals.
As Wayne State continues to celebrate their accomplishments over the past 150 years,
they emphasis 150 years of health care leadership. In May of 2019, the alumni association will
be hosting an alumni reunion for the classes ending in four and nine since 1944. The purpose of
the reunion is to encourage alumni to stay connected and share their stories with the WSU
School of Medicine community (Wayne State, 2018). The want alumni to continue creating
opportunities for alumni to make an ongoing impact by volunteering their time and expertise
with students and faculty. As well as building a culture of philanthropy to support robust medical
education and leading-edge research in Detroit (Wayne State, 2018). Everything at Wayne State
starts and ends with medicine. They are able to support their current students and reach out to
