Digital Library ------Virtual Library
Needs
• Information Explosion.
• Impact of IT.
• To save the space required for physical documents
• To provide access to more and more information.
• To provide downloading and printing facilities .
• To provide information in different format.
Features of Digital Library
 It is electronic based library.
 It is fully computerize library.
 All the information available in digital form.
 All the information stored in other storage devices
such as CD/DVD, Pen drive etc.
 Equal opportunity Access.
 Standard and quality.
 Searching and retrieval facilities.
Features of Digital Library
 Provides access to very large information
collection, both primary and secondary.
 Supports multimedia component.
 Provides links to different digital objects.
 Data base access through Internet and other
networks.
 Complete content of document are created or
converted into machine-readable form for online
access.
DL: OBJECTIVES
 Manage large amount of digital contents (images,
graphical, audio-video)
 Digitize the archival (rare) materials.
 Access the materials from outside library location.
 Save space of library.
 Quick accessing facility.
Components of a DL Architecture

 Database
 Metadata
 Digital Objects Identifiers
 Repository
 Access and Delivery
Advantage of DL
 Access: brings library to users
 Sharing: information resources; linking
 Timeliness: easier to keep current
 Searching, browsing: use of computer power
 Information resources: new forms possible
 Services: new & new forms possible
 Costs: may save effort, money
Problems
 Economical problems
 Integration between print and digital
 Institutional, cultural & social adjustments not easy
 Bridging the digital divide is so difficult.
 Legal issues: copyright protection security
 Individual: privacy protection and rights
 Education: impact on all levels
