Amendment No. 2
to
AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2002
Safety of toys
Part 1: Safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties
(ISO 8124-1:2000, MOD)
REVISED TEXT
The 2002 edition of AS/NZS ISO 8124.1 is amended as follows; the amendment should be inserted in the
appropriate place.
SUMMARY: This Amendment applies to Appendix ZZ.
Published on 20 February 2009.
Approved for publication in New Zealand on behalf of the Standards Council of New Zealand on 19 December
2008.
AMDT Appendix ZZ
No. 2
FEB Add the following variations to Appendix ZZ:
2009
Clause 3.55 (new) Add the following after Clause 3.54:
3.55
hazardous magnet
2 2
a magnet which has a flux index greater than 50 kG mm when determined in accordance
with 5.25 (determination of magnetic flux index) and which is in any of the following
shapes and sizes (refer to Figure 6(A)):
1 A cylinder with a length of not more than 32 mm and a diameter of not more than
11 mm.
2 A disk with a diameter of not more than 26 mm and a thickness of not more than
5 mm.
3 A sphere with a diameter of not more than 22 mm.
4 Any solid that will fit entirely within the volume or envelop of any of the above
defined shapes.
Clause 5.25 and Figure 22 (new) Add the following after Figure 21:
5.25 Determination of magnetic flux index (see 3.55 and 4.28)
5.25.1.1 Apparatus
D.C. field gauss meter with a resolution of 5 gauss (G) and an axial type probe.
5.25.2.1 Apparatus
5.25.2.2 Procedure
5.25.3 Calculation
2 2
The magnetic flux index (kG mm ) is calculated by multiplying the area of the pole surface
2 2
(mm ) of the magnet by the square of the maximum flux density (kG ).
Clause C.2.19 (new) Add the following after Paragraph C2.18:
C.2.19 Magnets (see 4.28)
The packaging and instructions of toys which contain loose as-received hazardous
magnets or loose as-received hazardous magnetic components should include a
statement similar to the following:
These requirements apply to all toys. They are intended as an interim measure to partially
address ingestion hazards associated with any toys used by all age groups that contain a
hazardous magnet or hazardous magnetic component. These requirements do not apply
to magnets used in motors, relays, speakers, electrical components, and similar devices
where the magnetic properties are not part of the play pattern of the toy.
It is expected that further requirements will be added in the future once testing
procedures addressing specific normal use and reasonable foreseeable abuse for toys
containing hazardous magnets are developed.
