DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE AND HERITAGE CONSERVATION

RESTORATION STUDIO

ASSIGNMENT FOR 4TH YEAR RESTORATION STUDIO

March / April 2018
Marghiloman Manor – Hagiești (Co. Ialomița)

AIM
The exercise aims to test the application of theoretical and methodological knowledge proper to conservation of
architectural heritage, in conservation / restoration planning. It also aims to consolidate and apply the knowledge acquired
during the course ‘Protection and conservation of architectural heritage’.

SUBJECT
The project proposes the approach of a number of problems specific to the restoration of historic monuments, applied to
the case of Marghiloman Manor of Hagiești (Co. Ialomița), inscribed in the Historic Monuments List of Ialomița County,
with code IL-II-m-A-14131. The multiple cultural values of the monument, and its current condition, justify and require a
restoration plan.

ASSIGNMENT
By means of historic elements analysis, site visits and analysis, and based on documentary materials available, students
are expected to respond to the following requirements, and theoretically motivate their options:

1. restoration of interior and exterior architectural surfaces, including decorative elements (metal, stone, mural painting); the
following problems shall be addressed: integration of lacunae and mouldings, reconstruction of repetitive elements,
treatment of architectural surfaces (material, texture, rendering), of decorative elements, window and door frames;
2. approach to previous interventions: define the attitude in respect to the consolidation and interior partitioning works of the
1990s and formulate restoration decisions accordingly;
3. approach and solutions for the roofing: volume, structure, technical details.

For the purpose of this exercise, the functional programme shall be that of cultural centre, and will comprise (non-
exhaustive list):
- spaces for temporary exhibitions;
- spaces for conferences / seminars / film screening;
- spaces for practical workshops (children and young people) / creative workshops (e.g. arts, film, literature) or research
(e.g. history, social sciences);
- individual study cubicles;
- library;
- accommodation;
- cooking and dining areas (for residents / participants to the events);
- cafeteria;
- technical and auxiliary areas.

The cultural centre will not hold collections to define a permanent exhibition. The exhibitions will be temporary, with free
subjects. The foreseen scenario is to organize, in partnership with major museums, temporary exhibitions, to provide the
possibility to present to the public those parts of the museum collections that do not qualify for the permanent exhibitions
of the respective museums, and are usually in deposits, rarely on display. A precious part of our museum heritage, which
is at present not accessible, will be thus brought to light.

A most flexible use of the spaces will be envisioned, so as to be fit to accommodate various activities (e.g. accommodation,
practical workshops, etc.).

The main requirement of the project is the restoration of the manor house, the functional programme being just a secondary
requirement, to allow for appropriate and practical choices for the organisation and use of the spaces and their use.

SCHEDULE & ORGANISATION
The project runs from March 19 to April 30, 2018, in the design studio.
Work is organised in 2-student teams.
STUDY PHASES
Phase 1 – from March 19 to 26
The teams (of two students) are formed and the following steps are taken:
a) Direct documentation of the monument:

c) Architectural analysis:
 survey (on the annexed drawings), interpreted;
d) Synthesis and definition of intervention types:

 plan with indication of functional divisions.
Phase 2 – starts April 16
Discussion of the proposals to solve the requirements of the project, analyzing the theoretical grounds, documentation and
analogies.
Each team must have at least one critique at each phase of the project. The two critiques are mandatory and precondition
for accepting the project for defence.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
Monday 30.04.2018, h 8.30-13.30, in the design studio.
Projects shall be submitted both in print and digital version. The digital files shall be sent through an on-line transfer

EVALUATION CRITERIA
 Respect for the historic monument status of the building – main criterion. From this status derives the requirement to
conserve the historical, architectural and memorial values, in the spirit of the Venice Charter and in line with current
legislation.
 Preservation of historical, architectural and memorial values does not prescind the possibility or even the necessity of new
additions. The quality and utility of the contemporary interventions stand for an important evaluation criterion.
 The thoroughness and quality of the study and of the graphical presentation, fit to express what and in which way is
preserved, which are the proposed interventions, as well as their relevance in respect to authenticity.
