Ceramics I Description­This program is designed to give students a basic understanding of techniques relating to 
ceramics.  Students will explore a variety of hand building techniques.
Ceramics II Description­Students will explore a variety of wheel throwing and hand building.

Grades:
Participation: 20% (Listening to Instructor and other students during instruction and Discussions, taking part in 
discussions, cleaning up), Tests 20%, Quizzes 10%, Projects 50%.  Grading of work will be based on craftsmanship, 
individual ability and effort, and following instructions.

Grade Scale:
A= 95%  B= 86% C= 77% D= 69% F=Below 64%

Class Information:
This class follows Brighton High School Attendance Policy and all Canyons School District Policies.
 Students receive 5 participation points each day. Points are lost by being absent, tardy, wasting time by not 
working, talking excessively, being unprepared for classwork or not doing daily cleaning job.  Students are 
expected to work the entire class period.  The only participation points that can be made up are EXCUSED
absences and the students has 5 school days to make them up.  See Mrs. Malan for information about that.
 Students are expected to clean up after themselves and maintain a cleanliness of the class.  
 Students cannot leave the class without permission or they’ll be marked absent.
 Students are graded on meeting the requirements for the project and working on the project for the entire 
time that is given.

Make up work will not be accepted unless student has an excused absence. Students are responsible for 
getting their makeup work.  For each day a project is late (unexcused absence), they will receive 10% off.  After 10 
days, the project will be a 0.  If a student is at school, but misses their ceramics period, that counts as a late day.   
All projects created in this class must be school legal.
If for some reason a student needs additional time to complete an assignment, the instructor is available before 
school from 7­7:50am, 2:30­3:00pm.

Fees
There is a $30.00 fee for Ceramics classes, which is due by the end of the first week of class.  This fee pays for a 
$7.00 supply fee, which the school charges for all Art classes, and all other supplies. Additional clay is $10.00 per bag, 
half bags are available for $5.00.  Fees should be paid by the first week of the beginning of the trimester. 
Cabinets are available to store Art work. Students are responsible for keeping track of their projects and supplies. 
If you lose your supplies you will need to purchase more.  You are responsible to lock your lockers, ‘lost’ or ‘stolen’ 
work will need to be redone for credit. Please be aware that some art materials may stain clothing.  Please wear 
appropriate clothing or an apron to protect your clothes.
This is the first assignment. You must have your Parent or Guardian sign and the student must also sign the 
additional signature page. This indicates that the student and Parents/Guardians have read and understand the 
Disclosure and agree to the terms listed for this class. Please return by the end of the first week of school.
