Application Reporting intern - Juba (Ref : RI/SSUD/SA )

Dear Sir
Dear Madam

I am writing to apply for the Reporting intern - Juba position that is advertised
http://reliefweb.int/job/reporting-intern-juba (august 29th, 2012).

The past two years I have obtained two master's degrees, respectively a master's degree in
interpretation (French-Spanish) and a master's degree in Conflict & Development. Next to having a
widespread cultural knowledge and a keen interest in and knowledge of conflict and development
and international relations, I also speak and write fluent Dutch, French, Spanish and English. I'm
also acquainted with Italian and I understand Portuguese and German, whereas I'm able to express
myself in basic terms in these languages. As you can see in my résumé, I'm also experienced in the
IT-department, which is evidenced by the many ECTS-credits I obtained while studying in this
particular field. For a more detailed look, I happily refer to my CV, which is to be found as an
attachment.

I felt immediately attracted to the offered vacancy for a number of reasons. First of all because I
feel passionnate about supporting the nascent state of South Sudan and setting up the path to ensure
its future. I believe in a combination of fieldwork and backoffice work which is of utter importance
to make things happen in the field. By virtue of the knowledge picked up in my education I am
now able to interpret different cultures, societies and the way they interact with conflicts on one
hand and developmental and relief work on the other. This does not mean however that my
knowledge is conclusive, but it does mean that I was given the tools to look beyond the frontier of
the obvious and go deeper in search of the root causes of conflict and how these root causes can be
studied in order to come up with solutions. I'm a big believer in a bottom-up approach and in moral
ownership of the local community rather than a top-down, one-size-fits-all solution, all of this while
respecting the local particularities, the tradition and preceeding history. I also have a sound
understanding of international relations and human rights issues around the world.

Given that I'm familiar with quite some administrative software, and with the proceedings of
administration itself, I also see myself as the right person to handle the administrative side of this
vacancy. I have learned to act both independently and as a teamplayer, due to previous experiences
in life. I successfully participated in sports on the amateur level and during this time I tried to be a
leader, both for my peers and those less experienced (and generally younger). During my studies in
the linguistics field I believe that I have gained the appropriate communicative skills to function in
this particular position.

With a high degree of esteem, I wish to render my formal intent and application for this position. I
will welcome a personal interview at your convenience to further discuss this opportunity with you
and to elaborate on my stance and my ideas.

Yours sincerely
Gilles 'T Kindt
