ravasi Bharatiya Divas is the biggest
diaspora engagement event held biennially
by the government of India to connect with its
31-million-strong diaspora from all around the
world.
Traditionally the event was held on January
9 – the date to mark the return of Mahatma
Gandhi to India from South Africa and starting
a non-violent freedom struggle against the
British colonial rule. However, this year the
government changed the schedule to give

an opportunity to global Indian diaspora to
simultaneously attend two other major cultural
celebrations of India – Kumbh Mela and
Republic Day.
Kumbh Mela –- one of the significant
symbols of the Indian culture – holds the
enviable recognition of being the most
significant peaceful assembly of spiritual and
religious followers of Hinduism bringing
together around 150 million people over the
period of festival spanning over a month. It is
the largest congregation of humanity in a single
place ever.

participate in the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas
celebrations – the biggest conglomeration of the
global Indian diaspora – as a Guest of Honour of
the Government of India along with prominent

in the first One Day International match at the

the park. In the process, Dhawan reached the
landmark of 5000 ODI runs and became the
second fastest Indian to reach the milestone.
It seemed like the Delhi duo will remain
unbeaten and complete the match with ease
but in the 29th over, Kohli was sent packing by
Lockie Ferguson when scoreboard was reading
132. He was caught behind by Tom Latham.

anniversary weekend to celebrate the
annual Ahmadiyya Convention or
‘Jalsa Salana’.
An event first started over
a hundred years ago by the
community’s founder Hadhrat Mirza
Ghulam Ahmad in the small Indian
village of Qadian, the ‘Jalsa Salana’
has become a worldwide event,
celebrated by the Ahmadi Muslims in hundreds
of countries the world over.
This year’s convention will be the 30th
consecutive annual event for the Ahmadi
Muslims in New Zealand.
“A topic that is often highlighted in the
media nowadays is Islam’s alleged denial
of basic human rights, especially to women
and non-Muslims. We chose the theme for
this year’s convention, ‘Islam and Human
Rights’, to investigate the truth behind the
common misconception that Islam as a religion
does not grant the same rights to everyone”,

inducted by the Global Organization of People of
Indian Origin (GOPIO) to its Honor Roll at its
annual valedictory session held on Sunday, January 20 in
Varanasi, India.
Mr Bakshi is the first person of Indian and Sikh origin
from New Zealand to be inducted in the roll.
“It’s incredibly exciting to be inducted into the GOPIO
Honor roll,” Mr Bakshi said.
GOPIO was established in 1989 with the aim of fighting
Human Rights Violation of people of Indian origin living
abroad.
“I have worked with Shri Kedar Nath Gupta and Shri
Manish Gupta to setup GOPIO from its inception days in
Delhi. After I moved to New Zealand, I then put my efforts
towards establishing the New Zealand chapter of GOPIO

Hunua Falls, the tragic water hole!

unua Falls, the picturesque regional
park and waterfall located in South
Auckland that tempts holidayers to
visit the popular destination has come into the
spotlight after it claimed yet another life – that
of a young man earlier this week.
Upmanyu Sharma, a 23-year-old Indian
national living in Wellington was pulled out
from the Hanua Falls on Monday, January
21, after almost 24-hours of search by the
police dive squad since he went missing on
Sunday afternoon. Mr Sharma had travelled to
Auckland for a holiday and had gone to the falls
with his friends.
This brings the number of deaths at the falls
at Hunua Falls to nine since 1980 and four in
the last five years including two Indians.
Less than 20 kilometres from Hunua Falls
and a few hours later, another incident was
reported at Ramarama Swimming Hole where a
man in his 50s went missing into the waterfall.
His body was located on Monday morning by
the police dive squad.
“We had two tragedies occurring just a few
hours and few kilometres apart,“ member of
the police team at the incident told TVNZ on
Monday after locating both the bodies.
Hunua Falls is a popular tourist spot just a
few kilometres via motorway through Pukekohe

of the global Indian diaspora - as a guest of

On Sunday, January 20, Mr Bakshi spoke
at the key youth event from the South Indian
state – Telangana, sharing his wisdom on
the development of youths and offering a
Kiwi-Indian perspective in the international
conference.
The conference was the first major
international event hosted by the recently re-
elected state government of Telangana and was
organised by Telangana Jagruthi – the social-
reform arm of the Telangana movement – that
had led to the formation of the youngest state of
India in 2014.
Founded in 2008, under the leadership and
patronage of Kalvakuntla Kavitha, Telangana
Jagruthi fosters a vision of uplifting the
underprivileged sections of the society within
the newly formed state, along with triggering
a cultural renaissance and promoting a broad
Telangana identity all around the world.
Engaging with the global diaspora is an
important goal of the Telangana Jagruthi,
with branches and office bearers in all major
countries, including New Zealand, where
Indian diaspora from Telangana state resides.

These scholarship slots include return
economy class and Third AC train fare to the
place of study, if so required.

The gift of confidence

H
e enjoys gifting confidence
to teenagers. Three years
ago, Ajay Marwa met a
fourteen-year-old boy who had an
amazing spark, yet struggling to find
direction in his life. Ajay quickly
understood his needs and chose to
mentor him through Project K, which
is a fourteen-month life changing
programme of Graeme Dingle
Foundation. The project is focused
on building confidence, teaching
life skills and encouraging a positive
attitude in teenagers. The aim of the
project is to empower children to
belief in their own ability, achieve
goals, and to help them find purpose
and direction in their lives.
For a couple of weeks Ajay entered
his world as a buddy rather than just
being an adult. It was super fun
going bowling with him, swimming
atthe beach, trying to fix swing and
hit shots at golf and most memorable
one to enjoy meals at Mc Donalds.
This friendship made him connect
with Ajay. But this bonding was
noticed first when his relationship
with family and friends started to
change for better. He began to share
his feelings with Ajay and his dreams
to be a police officer.
Ajay arranged a visit to a police
open day where he could see more.
This significantly helped the young
boyto build positive attitude and
boost his confidence. According to
Ajay, “He enjoys gifting confidence
to many teenagers like him who
needs positive role models.”
Ajay himself is a life learner.
He recently completed a graduate
diploma at Massey University in
Occupational Health and Safety. He
was born in Kenya and graduated in
Mathematics with Computing at a UK
university. He has vast experience
working in the UK for companies
like Shell and Mittal Steels. In 2010,
he shifted to New Zealand and
currently he is an Associate Director
at KPMG delivering consultancy in
the sustainable value team.

Indian cricketers seem to prefer ODI format

T
he Indian cricket team has made
history Down Under.
Winning the Test series was just one
part of the celebration.
Beating the Australians in the ODIs, for the
first time, was the icing on the cake.
Although, the Indian cricket Test team
is rated the best in the world, it seem far
more comfortable and confident playing
the One-day format.
The Indian players seem to know their
roles far better and there seems to be
a bounce in their step when they take
the field.
The fan following and success
of the limited overs game in India,
has given rise to a surfeit of good
players and so the problem that the
selectors face is in choosing the
right combination.
While it is a wonderful position to be in
for them, however, this also opens them
up to criticism if things do not go well.
A prime example at present is the
inclusion of India’s most successful
former captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
There is no reason to debate the
advantages that the Indian side derives
from his presence.
However, at 37 years, age has taken
its toll on his well-known ability of
hitting the ball at will into the stands.
One hopes he gets his form and fitness
in place well before World Cup 2019
in England.
His experience has played an important
role in India’s victory in Australia, but
his fitness is still a question mark.
One feels sorry for the dynamic
Rishabh Pant, who is far more suited to
play the shorter format of the game rather
than playing the conventional one.
For him, to be missing out on the
ODI’s in Australia and New Zealand
is quite bewildering, especially after
his performance in the Test series in
Australia.
The only reason that one can decipher
is that the selectors seem to have decided
on Dhoni for the World Cup and it could
get embarrassing if Pant succeeds.
The Indian World Cup team to England
needs youngsters like Pant, Prithvi Shaw
and Shubham Gill in the fold for the
future of Indian cricket to flourish.
They are all champion performers and
from the way some of the older batsmen,
who are still in the side, performed
during their last visit to England, one
does not get the confidence that they will
succeed there during the crucial World
Cup period.
The Board of Control for Cricket
in India (BCCI), seems to have lost its
control quite significantly.
The Indian team has had a long tour of
Australia and they will be following it up
with one to New Zealand.
The organising of two T20s and five
ODIs against Australia in February and
March 2019 by BCCI is rather ridiculous.
The Indian players deserve a month of
rest and recuperation.
This unfortunately will not happen
and with the IPL to follow, one hopes
that the Indian team will be fresh for the
World Cup.
The new World Cup format requires
each team to play one another and then
the top four play the semis and then the
final.
This totals 11 grueling matches, if one
reaches the final.
The vagaries of the English weather
and bus travel is also extremely taxing to
ones’ body.
A month of rest would have been ideal
for the likes of Kohli, Rohit, Dhawan and
our battery of fast bowlers.
The lack of a final decision from the
Supreme Court on the implementation of
the Lodha Committee reforms has made
Indian cricket into a messy affair.
The appointment of the Committee of
Administrators by the Supreme Court
many moons ago disintegrated from
four members to two and the regular
confrontation between them has created
an atmosphere of uncertainty.
One expected the court come forth
with a strong directive when they met on
January 17, but another postponement
has brought ones hopes to despair.
The stepping down of the amicus
curiae, the very astute and well-known
senior advocate Gopal Subramanium,
appointed by the Supreme Court at this
crucial juncture, was very surprising.
He was completely in the know of the
complicated issues involving the BCCI
and for P.S. Narsimha, the replacement,

Without a single BCCI committee in

word with no depth or understanding.
Punishment for the sake of it, is like
putting a naughty child in the corner.
Nothing much will come out from it.
Furthermore, a weak BCCI has
also ignited the hopes of the regime
which controlled it earlier. Under the
captaincy of N. Srinivasan, many of the
old stalwarts met to discuss the path of
a possible return, if not directly, then
through their proxies.
An equally worrying aspect, as not all
of them have been good for the game in
their respective state associations. This
is precisely why the BCCI is in this
predicament.
The COA has failed in putting the
house in order and the messy situation

not take a serious view of it, the losers
will finally be the millions of fans who
follow the game in India.

At peace in the madding crowd: Taking a holy dip at the Kumbh

I
t is the largest spiritual, cultural and
religious congregation of its kind and
attracts crores of devotees from India and
abroad at the Sangam - the confluence of the
Ganga and Yamuna rivers and the mythical
Saraswati. The historic city of Praygaraj,
which was recently renamed from Allahabad,
is witnessing the coming together of saints,
seers and devotees in numbers that can blind
the human eye.
Everywhere in the city, from its by-lanes
to the bathing ghats, all one can see is devout
believers headed in one direction. Upon
arriving in the city, the first sights are those
of folks arriving from the rural regions of the
country. Their sheer belief in the faith they
practise resonates from their eyes like vapour
arising from a snow-clad mountain in the
morning sky, lulling the environment of the city
in a spiritual mood.
As you walk down the road that leads to
the Sangam, you will encounter thousands of
people, wearing different costumes, talking in
different languages and chanting prayers as
they walk. The city has itself been decorated to
welcome the visitors.
Paintings, depicting scenes from ancient
Indian scriptures, adorn the walls along the
roads and the underpasses. And then there
are elements of the great Indian circus that
evoke curiosity among the visitors. Jaadugars
displaying their myriad tricks, astrologers
predicting the future to a gathering and medicine
sellers attracting customers by enthusiastically
speaking into their microphones, are the sights
that keep one company in the long walk to the
river bank.
As the river makes its appearance in the
distant horizon, numerous sadhus and mystics,
in their myriad avatars, are seen in their
respective tents.
They have all gathered at the banks of the
river and these holy men display their unusual
practices in full glory.
Seated at one of the tents near the pontoon
bridges that lead the visitors to Sangam, for
example, is a holy man showing off his nearly
three-metre long moustache, which he claims to
have grown over a decade. Dozens of devotees
throng his tent. Some seek photographs and
selfies.
Barely a few steps away from him is “Selfie
Baba”, clad in a spiritual attire and equipped
with a selfie stick attached to a smartphone.
His appearance, in his own words, signifies the
meeting of mythology and technology.
Along the way to the Sangam, several
temples make their appearances, with a distinct
‘bhajan’ playing in each of them. The visitors
are offered ‘prasad’ at several of them, before
they finally reach the destination.
The very sight of Sangam is refreshing; its
water clean, for a change, and despite the huge
crowd, it somehow seems to accommodate
all. For safety, personnel have been deployed
on the bathing ghats and ropes demarcting the
bathing areas can be seen. The water level in
most permissible areas is mild and there is a
rope for visitors to hold on to while they take
the holy dip.
It’s a sight worth seeing - and an experience
worth living. All tensions that inflict the human
mind seem to lose their relevance the moment
one goes full-body-down under the holy water,
which, according to the legends, opens the
doors to heaven.
The icy-cold water sends jitters through
the nerves but its impact is felt only for a few
seconds. By the time one rises out, both the
sensation of the chilly winter and the cold water
is gone.
Opening one’s eyes after the holy dip
introduces one to a world slightly different than
the one before. The picture is more clear, the
sounds more vibrant, and the mind so peaceful:
call it the impact of the churlish chidings of
the winter’s wind or a divine force at play but
there is surely something extraordinary that 17the
devout undergo after the holy dip.
The chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Har
Har Gange” resonate in the air as one steps out
and offers a prayer to the Sun god.
It is worth noting that the holy dip is
symbolical of a new beginning: the devotees
seek forgiveness for their errors and make a
fresh start after it.

many positive socio-political trends.
There is a new level of global
competitiveness in business that is
good for customers and a new kind of
power of communication in the hands
of citizens that forced transparency
of governance, making it difficult
for dictators to politically survive
for long. It is the destructive side of
the use of cyber space, however, that
is beginning to show up more and
more -- at the level of individuals,
organisations and nations -- and
clearly converting even the social
media into a weapon of perception
management, political combat and
proxy wars.
In India, the Twitter campaign that
was designed to show that the Modi
regime had created an atmosphere of
intolerance towards the minorities,
the orchestrated criticism of
the government for creating a
‘surveillance state’ following an
order of the MHA authorising the
Intelligence agencies to scan any
computer resource for reasons
connected to national security and
the escalation of the Pakistani ISI’s
proxy war against India through
the clandestine use of social media
for radicalising Muslim youth in
Kashmir and elsewhere, illustrate
this point.
It is a welcome feature of the
new age we live in that leaders of
the government and those in the
opposition take to social media for
reaching out to the people to explain
their stand on issues of the day.
US President Donald Trump uses
Twitter to an amazing degree for
announcing his foreign and domestic
policies and issuing rejoinders to
his critics. This is also now a part
of electoral politics that depends
heavily on perception management.
In India, political propaganda is
being made on social media even
in disregard of the prohibitory
provisions of the IT Act -- now
under adjudication -- that punished
calls for violence, inflammatory
pronouncements having the potential
of creating communal disharmony
and statements insulting the national
flag. Though the dividing line
between what is gross and abusive
on the one hand and suave and
convincing on the other, has thinned
out as far as the political discourse is
concerned, use of the power of social
media has now become a significant
factor in India’s electoral battles --
resort to ‘fake news’ notwithstanding.
The concept of influencing the
will or behaviour of adversaries is
not new and is now being practised
with full vigour across the world
because it is a low-cost option
also for targeting masses or voters
in an election. Citizens are now
increasingly impacted to shape the
outcome of elections and to pressure
their governments to change policies.
Social media is a means of raising
the people’s voice, which is fine, but
more often than not, it is now used
as a tool for motivated campaigns of
vested interests within or outside of
the country.
The Indian government has been
compelled, in recent times, to have
close scrutiny of the NGOs suspected
of precisely doing this and examine
their funding and links to safeguard
national security and integrity.
In technical terms, the aggregated
data, when processed through
advanced algorithms can reveal
significant material for perception
management. ‘Influence operations’
exploit emotional vulnerabilities.
Political parties, and even external
forces, use social media platforms
for circulation of misinformation
and even fake videos to create
apprehensions, manipulate
perceptions and mould public
opinion.
Parties are now going beyond the
old practice of ‘bribing’ voters to use
technology of data firms and services
on hire for targeting communities
on social media so as to tilt voting
points of their campaign should be.
Cyber-enabled operations are
now an integral part of Information
Warfare. A planned effort to use
technologies and devices is made
not only to steal the target’s data
for monetisation, which is a part of
competitive business today, but also
for pursuing hostile missions such
as degrading the target’s systems to
deny the advantage of information to
the latter and planting manipulated
information to elicit a particular
response on selected issues.
There are increasing incidents of
data breaches in India. Some three
million records were stolen, lost
or exposed in the country in 2017
-- a whopping increase over what
happened in 2016 while in 2018
millions of records were believed
to have been compromised in the
Aadhaar breach alone.
There are large leakages of data
from MNCs. Cambridge Analytica
was suspected of having harnessed
data of millions of Facebook users,
of which Indians were a significant
segment. The firm reportedly
leveraged them for political
campaigns. Its parent company
reportedly had links with British
Intelligence agencies. Similarly,
Microsoft is said to have routinely
shared the financial details of Indian
bank customers with Intelligence
agencies in the US - the Reserve
Bank of India had reportedly flagged
this breach
Information Warfare has moved
towards its combat version -- cyber
warfare -- which, in turn, is fast
getting integrated with general
warfare. Cyber operations are now

ndia and Mauritius reviewed the entire gamut of their
bilateral ties and discussed ways to further expand
cooperation in areas like Blue Economy during a
meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his
Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth on the sidelines
of this year's Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), the Indian
diaspora conclave on Tuesday.
"The two Prime Ministers reviewed the entire gamut
of the long-standing and time-tested strategic relationship
between both countries, based on deep emotional bonds
of kinship and culture," the External Affairs Ministry said.
It said the the talks focussed on initiatives to further
strengthen the bilateral ties, including finalisation of
the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Partnership
Agreement (CEPCA).
India is Mauritius's largest trading partner and has been
the largest exporter of goods and services to the Indian
Ocean island nation since 2007.
"The various ongoing bilateral development cooperation
projects were discussed and new proposals for critical
partnership projects in health, disaster management and
energy were agreed upon," the ministry statement.
"The leaders also discussed ways to expand further
cooperation in areas of Blue Economy and collaboration
in Africa." Earlier, delivering the keynote address as the
chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the PBD here,
Jugnauth lauded India's economic growth under Modi and
commended New Delhi's efforts to reach out to the Indian
diaspora across the world.
He also announced that Mauritius is going to organise a
Bhojpuri Mahotsav.
Around 68 per cent of Mauritius's total population of
over 1.2 million are people of Indian origin.

up the issue with Islamabad when the latter sends its draft agreement for
regulating entry into its territory through the Kartarpur Corridor.
He said Islamabad was well within its rights to set terms and conditions
relating to its territorial safety and security, but it should take into consideration
the fact that the first Sikh Guru’s ideology was not confined to Sikhs but is
emulated by people of all faiths.
“The Sikh ethos prescribes non-discrimination, with even the concept of
langar being casteless service for all,” said the Chief Minister.
He added a large number of Hindus in India were ardent followers of Sri
Guru Nanak Dev and it was their cherished dream to visit the Kartarpur Sahib
Gurdwara, which was closely associated with the first Sikh Guru.

Loneliest Frog,” started

find it. It’s not like there was anything

years old, at least. But he’s aged well,
and he’s kind of a special guy.
Romeo is a Sehuencas water frog,
once thought to be the last one on the
planet. He lives alone in a tank at the

d’Orbigny in Bolivia.
A deadly fungal disease threatens

brought him to the museum’s
conservation breeding center, they
expected to find another frog he

last year, historical records provided
little help. Sehuencas, a region in
Bolivia and the species’ namesake,
was gone, replaced by a massive

once hosted dozens of frog species
were now frogless. And Romeo’s
species is particularly elusive, living
under rocks at high elevations and
never leaving the water.
The search was cold, wet and
taxing in the misty, overgrown
forest. Near the end of one long
day, the researchers were ready to
give up, but rallied to search one
last stream. That’s when Camacho
Badani spotted a frog leaping from a
waterfall into a pond.
She hustled to the spot where it
landed, reached down and pulled
up a Sehuencas water frog. This
was Juliet. “Oh my God, I found
it!” Camacho Badani screamed.
The team later found four more
specimens, a female and three males.
Although Juliet looks healthy, she
is in quarantine for disease testing
before she meets Romeo. “We don’t

Trump recognises opposition leader as Venezuela's
interim president
S President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he officially
recognises the new speaker of Venezuela's National Assembly as that
nation's interim president, a move aimed at ratcheting up pressure on
leftist head of state Nicolas Maduro.
Trump's announced his decision in a statement released just minutes after
Juan Guaido told a large crowd of supporters in Caracas that he was assuming
the powers of Venezuela's executive branch and would fight against Maduro's
"usurpation" of the presidency.
"Today, I am officially recognizing the president of the Venezuelan National
Assembly, Juan Guaido, as the Interim President of Venezuela," Trump's
statement said, reports Efe.
"In its role as the only legitimate branch of government duly elected by
the Venezuelan people, the National Assembly (the opposition-controlled
unicameral legislature) invoked the country's constitution to declare Nicolas
Maduro illegitimate, and the office of the presidency therefore vacant," he
added.
Female-dominated inner circle key for women
to become CEOs
W
omen who communicate regularly with a female-dominated inner
circle are more likely to attain high-ranking leadership positions,
according to a new study that included a researcher of Indian
origin.
The team from the University of Notre Dame and Northwestern University
found that more than 75 per cent of high-ranking women maintained a
female-dominated inner circle, or strong ties to two or three women whom
they communicated with frequently within their network.
For men, the larger their network -- regardless of gender makeup -- the
more likely they are to earn a high-ranking position, said the study published
in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Unfortunately, when women have social networks that resemble their male
counterparts', they are more likely to hold low-ranking positions.
"Although both genders benefit from developing large social networks
after graduate school, women's communication patterns, as well as the gender
composition of their network, significantly predict their job placement level,"
said Nitesh V. Chawla, Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science
and Engineering at Notre Dame.
Thailand to hold general election on March 24
T
hailand will hold general election on March 24, the first polls
since a coup d'etat in May 2014, the Electoral Commission said on
Wednesday.
Commissioner Ittiporn Boonpracong told a press conference that parties
must register their candidates for the elections between February 4 and
February 8.
The announcement came hours after the military junta that governs Thailand
issued a decree asking the Electoral Commission to set a date for the polls.
The decree, signed by King Vajiralongkorn and published in the Royal
Gazette - the official bulletin - paved the way for a return to democracy after
the bloodless coup of May 2014 led by current Prime Minister General Prayut
Chan-ocha.
He did not say whether he intended to run, but he was widely expected to.
When he took power, he pledged to impose order and fight corruption and
political divisions after months of anti-government protests.
The coup occurred days after then Prime Minister and leader of Pheu Thai,
Yingluck Shinawatra, was removed from office by the Constitutional Court
for abuse of power.
NASA replaces astronaut for 1st Boeing mission to ISS

he US space agency has replaced one
of the astronauts assigned to fly on
the first crewed test launch of a first-
time Boeing capsule to take passengers to the
International Space Station (ISS).
NASA announced late Tuesday that
astronaut Eric Boe will no longer fly on
the mission owing to unspecified "medical
reasons." NASA astronaut Mike Fincke has
been added to the crew.
"He previously served as an International Space Station flight engineer and
science officer on Expedition 9, and commanded the station on Expedition
18," said the space agency.
This will be Fincke's fourth trip to space since joining the astronaut corps
in 1996. Fincke will begin training immediately alongside NASA's Nicole
Mann and Boeing's Chris Ferguson, who were both assigned to the mission
in August 2018.
The Starliner's Crew Flight Test will be the first time that the new spacecraft,
which is being developed and built by Boeing as part of NASA's Commercial
Crew Programme, is launched into space with humans on board.
An uncrewed flight test of the Starliner will test the spacecraft's critical
systems prior to Fincke, Ferguson and Manna's launch, said NASA.

ndia captain Virat Kohli on Tuesday said the key for his team will be not to
get flustered by 300-plus scores as they begin their limited overs series
against New Zealand here on Wednesday.
"New Zealand always have fields that make the game high-scoring. The
key is not to panic too much in the field when you see 300 being posted
regularly. You just have to back yourself to get those runs, and set a big
target when you're batting first," Kohli told reporters on the eve of the
first match.
"The last time we played (here), we probably didn't have that kind of
composure, to be relaxed in the field in terms of chasing close to 300.
"We take that as a challenge and we're looking forward to doing what
we did in Australia -- believing in our abilities and giving in a balanced
performance every time we step on the field," he added.
In 2014, India fared poorly in this part of the world, not winning anything
across the two Tests and five ODIs.
"If you see the last three years or so, we have really evolved as a batting
group," Kohli said.
"We are more sure and more aware of our abilities, and we are ready to
counter all the things that are going to be thrown at us.
When the sides clashed in India last year, Kohli's men clinched a
closely-fought series 2-1. The fact that they are the No.3 ranked team
in the world speaks about their consistency over the last couple of
years," Kohli said.
"We played them in India as well and we got beaten in Mumbai.
All the games were competitive, and we felt they had a really good
balance in their team - a great mix of youth and experience - and
the bowling attack is experienced and not that old.

Asked about his Kiwi counterpart Kane Williamson
and the experienced Ross Taylor, Kohli said: "He's

other guys as well - you can't take anyone lightly.
"Their batting usually revolves around Kane

We are aware of that and we are working on

would serve as preparation
for the tournament, Kohli
said winning matches was
always the priority.
"There needs to be a collective

positions in the team, we are open to do that as well.
We don't want to be too rigid because you have to be
flexible in your mind and in your preparation to be

Methods
• Boil the Maggi as per instructions on
the packet. Add a pinch of salt and the
tastemaker provided in the packet.
• Heat oil in a pan and carefully break the
eggs into it. Stir continuously.
• Add salt and red chilli powder. Cook for 2
minutes.
• Remove the pan from the flame and add this
egg bhurji to the Maggi. Mix well and serve.
Chicken Maggi  • Maggi – 1 packet
Ingredients:
• Maggi – 1 packet
• Leftover chicken or chicken sausages – 1
cup
• Ginger-garlic paste – 1tsp
• Salt – as per taste
• Oil – 1tbsp
• Boil the Maggi as per instructions on
the packet. Add a pinch of salt and the
tastemaker provided in the packet.
• Remove the bones from the chicken if
you’re using leftovers. In the case of chicken
sausages, cut them into small pieces.
• Heat oil in a pan and add the chopped onion.
Sauté for a minute.
• Then add the ginger-garlic paste and the
chicken pieces.
• Add salt if needed and stir well.
• Add the chicken to your Maggi, mix well
and serve hot.
Maggi cutlets 
Ingredients:
• ½ packet of Maggi noodles
• ½ cup finely chopped boiled vegetables
(carrots, beans, cauliflower etc.)
• ¼ cup boiled, peeled and mashed potatoes
• ½ teaspoon finely chopped green chillies
• ¼ cup finely chopped coriander
• 1 teaspoon jeera
• ½ cup chopped onions
• 1tsp Garam masala/chat masala
• 1tsp Aamchur powder (optional)
• Salt to taste
• Oil for shallow frying

• Combine all the ingredients including the
noodles in a bowl and mix well using your
hands. Check taste and adjust accordingly.
• Divide the mixture into small portions.
Now take a portion of the mix between your
palms, flatten the top and make it into small
patties.
• Heat oil in a pan and place these patties in it.
Cover with lid and cook on medium flame.
• Allow both the sides of the patties to turn
golden brown.
• Once the cutlets become crispy, switch off
the flame. Serve hot with tomato ketchup
Maggi Stuffed Omlette 
Ingredients:
• Eggs – 2
• Milk – 2tbsp
• Red chilli powder – a pinch
• Salt – as per taste
• Oil – 1tsp
Methods
• Boil the Maggi as per instructions on
the packet. Add a pinch of salt and the
tastemaker provided in the packet. Cook till
the water is completely absorbed. Keep it
aside.
• Break both the eggs in a bowl and whisk it.
• Add the milk, red chilli powder and a pinch
of salt to the eggs. Keep whisking for 2
minutes.
• Heat oil in a pan and pour the egg mixture in
it. Cook on low flame for 2 minutes.
• Flip the omelette to the other side and cook
both the sides properly.
• Again the flip to the former side and place
the cooked Maggi noodles at one side of
the omelette like a semi-circle. Fold the
omelette from the other side to cover the
noodles.
• Switch off the flame and serve hot with
ketchup.
Baked Maggi with corn and cheese
Ingredients:
• 1 packet Maggi
• 1 tablespoon butter
• 1 cup of grated mozzarella cheese
• Half a cup grated cheddar cheese
• Half a cup boiled corn
• Water
• Salt to taste

• Half-cook the noodles and turn the flame
off.
• Grease a baking tray with butter, transfer

 Use concealer strategically
The whole point of concealing is to hide
the discolouration and to get an evened out
shade. Most often dark circles can make
your eyes look smaller than usual. Choose a
shade that’s slightly lighter and warmer than
your skin tone to brighten and correct any
blue or purple undertones. Blend carefully,
buffing with your finger or a sponge, working
underneath and around the eyes—as well as
all over the lids—to get a uniform base. Most
importantly, remember to conceal the inner
and outer corners of your eyes which tend to
look darker. By adding a little light to these
areas can instantly bring your eyes forward
and emphasise their size.
Brighten your waterline
Lining your waterline with a dark liner is
an absolute classic, but it often makes your
eyes look about half their size. Lining the
lower waterline with a nude liner is the easiest
trick of all. For a dramatic effect, you can try
a white liner, but it is always preferred to go
for a nude one as it looks more natural at the
same time gives you the same effect. It is best
to carry you liner with you on the go as the
liner doesn’t last longer on the lower waterline.
Highlight
Tactical highlighting is best to open up your
eyes. Highlighter doesn’t just give some life
and definition to your cheekbones, but gives
your cheeks the needed light and structure.
Highlight your brow bone, which will lift your

them up, and on the very centre of the lid to
make your eyes pop.
Don’t leave out your lower lash line
Most of us have the habit of skipping this
step. But adding mascara to your lower lashes
will open up the eye for a wide doe-eyed look.
Try a brown mascara for a softer look. To
level things up a bit, use a coloured mascara.
Adding a little eyeliner to the outer corner of
your lower lash line will also help to give an
elongated look to your eyes. Use a soft brown
eyeshadow to smoke it out, which will make
the eye look wider. A harsh line can just do the
opposite.
 Define your crease
Whether you’re going all out with smokey
eyes, or opting for a natural look, use your
eyeshadow to define your crease. Use a fluffy
brush to build in the product onto your crease,

Remembering Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

hy even more than 73 (from 18th August 1945) years
after His disappearance, the people of India and the
historians from all over the world, are so keen on
finding out the truth about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose? A part
of the answer has to do with what Netaji did for us.
Netaji was a great patriot and a freedom fighter, who
dedicated his entire life tothe pursuit of India’s independence
from the yoke of British rule.
He was part of the mainstream movement, spearheaded by
the Indian National Congress.
In 1939, serious differences arose between him and the
mainstream, most notably, Gandhiji. The major differences
were in the modus operandi.
It became so bad that Subhash Chandra Bose was side-lined
and expelled from Congress.
Netaji, as Congress President in 1939 had asked the Congress
to serve the British a 6 month ultimatum to leave India, during
2nd World War.
Netaji saw it as an opportunity and asked Gandhiji and the
Congress to put pressure on the British.Gandhiji was not in
favour of such action because the British were involved in
Second World War.Congress under the leadership of Gandhiji,
rather decided to support British during World War II.
Netaji vehemently opposed the Congress decision to support
the British in the war.
The struggle for freedom had been mellowed down.With the
aim to initiate a mass movementhe called out to people for their
whole-hearted participation. There was tremendous response to
his call. He was then expelled from Congress.
After expulsion his popularity increased and he became very
popular leader and a symbol of Indian youth that were ready
to face all kinds of troubles in their fight to free India from
British rule.
Situation in the year 1939 was very unfavourable for the
British Empire.
On one side, they (British Empire) were involved in
WorldWar II and on other side Netaji’s popularity and gaining
support of the masses, created real worry for them. Initially
they locked him up in jail but his health started deteriorating.
He was subsequently placed under house arrest in his Calcutta
home. At 1:30 am on 16 January 1941, he escaped from his
house and managed to reach Peshawar.
From there with the help of supporters of Aga Khan, he
reached Afghanistan.
He named himself Ziauddin, as a Pashtun Insurance
agent. From Afghanistan he travelled to Moscow on an
Italian passport.
From Moscow, he reached Rome and from there he reached
Germany. Most probably this is the Greatest Escape Story in
Political History.
In Germany he sought to raise an Army of Indian soldiers
from prisoners of war, captured by Germany, forming the Free
India Legion and the Azad Hind Radio.
From the very start of the war, the Japanese intelligence
services noted from speaking to captured Indian soldiers that
Netaji was held in extremely high regard as a nationalist and
was considered by Indian soldiers to be the right person to lead
a rebel Army.
1943, the Japanese invited Netaji to lead the Indian nationalist
movement in East Asia.  The INA had left deep impressions on many of the existing

Bose and Mohan Singh in 1942 in South East Asia by Indian
Prisoners of War of the British-Indian Army captured by Japan

The aim of INA was to secure Indian independence from
British rule.  This new consciousness led them to react more sharply not

On 4th July 1943 Netaji assumed the leadership of Indian
Independence Movement and the leadership of INA was

by INA soldiers.

expatriate population in Malaysia and Burma. Netaji’s appeal
to the Indian patriots (ex-prisoners and thousands of civilian
volunteers), saying, “Give me blood, I will give you freedom”
(Tum Mujhe Khoon Do, Mai Tumhe Azadi Dunga) had the
greatest impact and influence on them.INA fought along with
the Japanese Army against the British forces in Burma, Imphal
and at Kohima.
On 21st October 1943, Netaji proclaimed the establishment
of a Provisional Independent Indian Government and his Azad
Hind Fauj alongside Japanese troops advanced to Rangoon and
then reached Kohima and Imphal on 18 March 1944.
In that battle, the mixed Indian and Japanese forces were
defeated and forced to retreat.
INA succeeded in maintaining its identity, based in Burma
(now Myanmar) and Indochina as a Liberation Army. Azad
Hind Fauj lost its battle but, it won the war against the British
imperialists.

Their encounters with members of the INA and the secret
circulation of past INA propaganda had a lasting impression of
the British-Indian soldiers.
In fact, one British officer observed: “In the eleven months
which had ... elapsed since the first contacts of the Indian Army,
Navy and Air Force with the mass of the INA in Rangoon, there
had been widespread fraternization. Its result was political
consciousness which the Indian Servicemen had never before
possessed.”

parties, the morale of the members of the British-Indian troops

Air Force went on a strike to protest against the trials and in
February 1946, the Royal Indian Navy also joined the mutiny

experiencing bursts of violence.
It was evident by the middle of 1946 that the Indian Armed
Forces became INA sympathizers.
The British administration was able to gather some important
lessons from the revolt of the British-Indian Army and Navy.
It was then that the British realized that they have to relinquish
India and they decided to leave.
It was Netaji and INA’s impact that forced the British to quit
India in 1947.
In an interview to BBC in February 1955, Dr Bhimrao Ramji
Ambedkar elucidated the reason why British left India in 1947.
Dr Ambedkarsaid,“Bose, Not Gandhi, Ended British Rule
in India.”
He also said that “Gandhi contributed tothe freedom struggle,
but to say that his Quit IndiaMovement led to the freedom,
would be an overstatement”.
Dr Ambedkar further said that, “Two things led the British
to free India.
The British were ruling with the strong belief that they had
total control over the loyalty of soldiers. Whatever happened
in the country or whatever politicians did were not areas of
concern for them. But when they found out that Indian soldiers
had formed a party and were planning to blow them away, the
British hopes were squashed.
There was considerable amount of faith in the INA. The
British were now scared of a rebellion as the army was now
looking up to Netaji. Netaji had done enough damage and
the British were certain of leaving India.
The only question was ‘When?’ The man who
had paved the way for a British exit was nowhere
to be seen. We owe it to Netaji, the man who made
a greater impact than Gandhi”.
On 12 February 1946, commander-in-chief
of the Indian Army, Sir Claude Auchinleck, was
asked to explain to his top military commanders
through a “Strictly Personal and Secret” letter the
reasons the military had to let the INA “war criminals” and
“traitors” go off the hook.
He wrote: "Having considered all the evidence and
appreciated to the best of my ability the general trend of
Indian public opinion, and of the feeling in the Indian Army,
I have no doubt at all that to have confirmed the sentence of
imprisonment solely on the charge of ‘waging war against
the king’ would have had disastrous results, in that it would
have probably precipitated a violent outbreak throughout the
country, and have created active and widespread disaffection in
the Army, especially amongst the Indian officers and the more
highly educated rank and file.”
Clement Richard Attlee (who served as Prime Minister of
the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951), agreed that Netaji
Subhas Chandra Bosewas the toughest Challenge the British
Empire faced.
When Attlee came to India after 1947 as a state guest, he was
asked by the Governor of Bengal that “since Gandhi’s Quit
India Movement had tapered off quite some time ago (1942)
and in 1947 no such new compelling situation had arisen that
would necessitate a hasty British departure, why did they have
to leave”?
In his reply Attlee cited several reasons, the main among
them being the erosion of loyalty to the British crown among
the Indian Army and Navy personnel as a result of the military
activities of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
He was also asked what was the extent of Gandhiji’s
influence upon the British decision to quit India. Hearing this
question, Attlee’s lips became twisted in a sarcastic smile as he
slowly chewed out the word, ‘m-i-n-i-m-a-l’.
Netaji was not acknowledged for political reasons. It was
Netaji’s impact that forced the British to quit India in 1947and
transfer the power (in real sense which is not freedom) to
Congress and Muslim League by dividing India into two parts
(India and Pakistan) on the basis of religion, which I consider
as the worst historical and political blunder in 20th century.The
man (Netaji) who had paved the way for a British exitwasnot
present in 1947.
If he was present during that period, then it would not have
been possible for British todivide India (in their term) on the
basis of religion. It would have been undivided India and we
