with a group of 6 students
on redesigning the fabric
of downtown Kyoto. With
connections to city councilmen,
radio talk hosts, master
landscapers, and the remaining
generation of the city, we set out
to revitalize the heart of Kyoto
back to its original state.

Modular Bays Public Transit Isle

Build a system of modular spaces of
similar, repetitious design that
can easily be added upon while
maintaining proper visual
aesthetic. In the construction of
these spaces, ensure that the
design carries out in a linear
fashion and that the original
number of bays ranges from three to
five sections, or any odd-numbered
amount depending on the need
thereafter for more annexes.
Designate a route solely for the travel
of public transportation at the very
center of the street, in-between
opposing lanes of traffic. In doing so,
a separation of public and private
transportation is made, allowing buses
to run on their own schedule, free from
interrupting other traffic. Along this route at select intervals, place a bus
stop, thus creating a public transportation isle. Make this isle accessible to
the universal public from both sides of the street via crosswalk, provide the
usual bus stop amenities, but visually empower this special layer of the street.

community build organization.
I was given the challenge
to create a 30” x 60” graphic
board to explain the process
of designBridge in context of
this project. This would give
NCARB an opportunity to see
what the University of Oregon
Architecture program does
to integrate students into
professional practices, and for
them to help us with grants
ranging from $7,500 to $25,000.

selected in the Spring of 2008 and
incubated over the summer by an
individual student. This student
cultivated preliminary client
relations, placing the project in a
strong starting position for the
academic year. Fall term’s
Pre-designBridge was the first time
the project team assembled. The
Pre-dB course focused on typical
pre-design work; code research
and client relations are critical foci,
as are site analysis and
programming, project
management, and responsible
follow-through.
The former board president
of HIV Alliance commented,
“I remember coming to

meetings during HIV testing
hours. Often, I walked
through people lining the
stairs waiting for tests and
their results. Each time it
struck me that it wasn’t right
that we had people waiting

synthesizing the work done in
pre-designBridge into a cohesive
schematic
proposal. As pre-dB resulted in very
loose schematic design, the studio
course focused upon refining that work,
moving quickly into a design
development phase.
The end goal of the designBridge studio was a
permit set of construction documents. Team
members utilized materials exploration and

professionals in the architecture and engineering
fields, wresting with a wide range of site, code, and
structural restraints in realizing their design. The team
used full-scale mockups to help inform the client
about the design, rallying support and aiding
