Back-story: The third son of a minor noble house, Erasmus was packed
off by his father at the age of 12 to join the priesthood of Erathis.
The family hail from the southern city of Solimre, and have served for
two-three generations in the ruler’s household as butlers, chamberlains, and
other assorted middling positions. Erasmus’ father’s Tycho currently serves in
the prominent position as the Lord’s chancellor – much to the chagrin of his
enemies at court – who are consequently spreading rumours that the family
originally hail from the merchant classes. As a result, Tycho often likes to make
the point of being ostentatious and proving his courtliness to anyone and
everyone who will pay attention, (though the rumour his father purchased the
family coat of arms from the city herald has yet to be supressed).
Erasmus was sent to the priests of Erathis in the hope that he could rise
among their ranks to become a prominent judge or city official, (given that
Erathis is the Goddess of civilisation and order, and often such people worship
her/come from her worshippers’ ranks). He did well among them and learned
his letters, as well as some early knowledge of the law and history. He in fact
became a true believer of the faith, no less, but felt that the closeness of the
priesthood with the city’s elites – as well as his father’s motives – ran counter
to the true message behind Erathis’ teaching of cooperation, and in fact was a
mask for pure, unbridled, personal ambition.
As a result of this, he ended up leaving the priests in his early twenties,
and was cast to the wind by both them and his father. He used his skills and his
upbringing (which provided him with the basics in how to ride and fight) over
the next few years to earn his keep any way he can, eventually spiralling into a
world of drink, debt, and gambling, and leaving his faith and family behind.
Finally, in his late 20s, the Goddess (or some entity appearing to him as
the Goddess – your choice which), came to him in a vision and lambasted him
for how far he’d fallen, but encourages him in his beliefs about the priesthood.
He’s given a quest by her to retrieve some holy relics, and then to return to the
priests so he can ultimately take over and enact wide-ranging reforms.
His first move was to return to his home city of Solimre, where his
training began so many years ago. There he met a simple but pleasant man by
the name of Pela – a fellow follower of Erathis – with whom he now travels…
