Binding Additives for XRF-Analysis
Not all samples can be pelletized using Aluminium cups. They may be unstable or the alu-
minium cups effect the result. In such a case a binding material can be used. The most com-
mon is Hoechstwax HWC, available as a loose powder. Alternatively, a high performance
“multimix” binder is available, in tablet form, producing highly stable and durable pellets. It
is important to mix the binder well with the sample using a suitable mill. Contact us for
information on appropriate mills for your application.

If you have only a small amount of sample material a stable pellet can be made by using

boric acid at the back of the sample. The boric acid is poured into the die first and then the
sample is added on top. During pressing the boric acid forms a stable backing to the sam-
ple.

Our sample preparation tool WZ-0001 is used to prepare sample cups in a very simple way, fixing the film
without folds or creases.
The use of the steelring WZ-0002 is described previously.
To use our 40mm cups on Bruker SRS or S4 systems we recommend exchanging the centring ring in the
sample holder. We will provide you with instructions and appropriate adapters.
The special sucker tool WZ-0004 avoids handling samples with your fingers.
Oxford Systems allow the use of specific setting up samples “SUS”. You can prepare your own setting up
samples using sample holder WZ-0005. We can supply custom-made setting up samples for your applica-

Manual and electric hydaulic presses
The preparation of solid pellets requires a hydraulic press and an appropriate die. Stable
pellets can be prepared from a loose powder, using an aluminium cap or binder material.
Usual diameters for XRF are 32 and 40mm. Considering that pressure is force per surface
area it is recommended to use at least 15 tons for 32mm and 25 tons for 40mm.

There is a wide range of 440C hardened stainless

steel Evacuable Pellet Dies, used for compacting
powdered samples into disks or briquettes.
The dies are designed for use with our Hydraulic

Presses. Halide disks for infrared analysis are usu-
ally produced with the smaller size dies. The larg-
er size dies are commonly used in briquetting
samples for XRF and XRD analysis and many
other industrial applications. All of the dies are
equipped with nitrile O-ring seals and an evacu-
ation port to allow for the removal of moisture, if
desired, during the pressing process.

Automatic flux dispenser for fused beads
Weighing flux like lithium tetraborate for XRF fusion beads is a laborious and repetitive
operation and analysts would be much better employed on more intelligent laboratory
tasks. The solution to this is an automated system but is important to maintain the accura-
cy capability of the manual method. The FluXana flux dispenser provides a high level of
accuracy and flexibility for various types of flux.
Operation
The system comprises a dispenser module, a control unit and optional analytical balance.
The platinum crucible is placed on the balance. The system dispenses the required
amount of flux (e.g. 8g) in about 30 seconds. Sample name and exact weight of the flux
and sample can be printed out if required on and optional printer. The weight of the
added sample material can also be printed out if required. After homogenising the sam-

ple the crucible is transferred directly to the fusion machine.

Acid Inert Hot Plates

They can be used as standard hot plates or
as a wet digestion device, by addition of a
rack. Dedicated racks can be manufactured
to size of your containers. The material
insures a perfect homogeneity of the temper-
ature and shows an acid inert surface. Due to
their conception, the whole surface of the
hot plates can be used at the same tempera-
ture. Temperature is fixed by an up and down regulator. Precision of the temperature 1°C.
