What is an
ARCHITECT and
its role in the
society and to the
environment?
An architect is a person who designs buildings and
prepares plans to give to a builder. What he or she
designs is called architecture. Architects make
drawings with pens, pencils, and computers, and this
is also called drafting. Sometimes they first make
small toy-sized buildings called models to show what
the building will look like when it is done.
ARCHITECT’S role to the society
What’s life without buildings?
Architects are involved in planning out the
direction in which a city grows or uses the land,
how roads are laid, pavements, plumbing,
electrical, drainage and sewerage, landscaping
etc. Architects are involved in setting the design
guidelines and building codes that are followed
by cities, states and nations.
ARCHITECT’S role to the environment
ARCHITECT’S role to the
environment
Architects need to make buildings that are
friendly to the environment and more green
which can be adaptable to the surroundings, in
other words, they need to create buildings that
are energy efficient, like green buildings or
sustainable buildings which are designed to
reduce the overall impact of the built
environment on human health and nature
What does an
Architect do?
But first, What
is an
Architect?

Plans Design Oversees

Architects design
all kinds of
buildings. They
design schools
and skyscrapers
They also
design hospitals,
hotels,
churches,
train stations,
houses and
many more
But what does the
word "design" means?
A design is simply a plan.
Architects create the overall look of buildings and
other structures, but the design of a building
involves far more than its appearance.

Buildings also must be………..

User
Functional Safe Economical Satisfaction
Architects spend a great deal of time
explaining their ideas to clients,
construction contractors, and others.
The architect and client discuss the following:

1.Objectives
2.Requirements
3.Budget of a project
After discussing and
agreeing on the initial
proposal, architects
develop final
construction plans that
show the building's
appearance and details
for its construction.
Architect
needs to
draw a
plan of
the
building.
3-D DRAWINGS
The building is then built by a construction
company which follows the directions of the
plans for the building.

The architect will closely

supervise the construction
company to make sure that
the building is built
according to the plans.

Works of Antoni Gaudi Sagrada
Familia

The most famous of all Gaudi’s

works has been under
construction since 1882. The
famed architect took over the
construction of the Sagrada
Familia (Spanish for “Holy
Family”) one year later but he
didn’t live to see his masterpiece
completed. In fact, less than one
third of the church was completed
by the time of his death in 1926.
Works of Antoni Gaudi Casa Mila
Also known as La Pedrera, Casa Mila
is one of the best examples of the
architect’s creativity. A part of the
original UNESCO World Heritage Site
of “Works of Antoni Gaudi” since 1984,
the house was built for Pere Mila i
Camps and Roser Segimon i Artells
between 1906 and 1912. Today, it is
home to the Fundacio Catalunya-La
Pedrera which organizes a range of
exhibitions and public activities but the
building is also open to the public for
viewing
Works of Antoni Gaudi Casa de los Botines
Casa de los Botines, also known as Casa
Fernandez y Andres is a spectacular
building in Leon in the Spanish province
of Leon. Built according to Gaudi’s
design in less than a year in 1891, the
building was commissioned by Simon
Fernandez and Mariano Andres, owners
of a company that worked with Eusebi
Güell (who recommended the famous
architect to Fernandez and Andres). In
the late 1920s, Casa de los Botines was
bought by the bank Caja Espana which
had it remodeled to suit its needs but
didn’t alter or change Gaudi’s work in any
way.

Casa Calvet
Casa Calvet stands out from Gaudi’s works.
But it doesn’t stand out with a unique, original
or/and innovative design. Instead, it stands
out for being kind of conventional and
according to some, conservative for Gaudi’s
standards. The building which was designed
as part residential and part commercial
property does feature distinctive “Gaudi’s
touch” but it blends in with other buildings in
the district rather than standing out from the
“crowd”. Casa Calvet was built for the
industrialist Pere Calvet between 1898 and
1900.
Works of Antoni Gaudi Church of Colonia
Güell
The Church of Colonia Güell is
actually a crypt that was built
according to Antonio Gaudi’s
design between 1908 and
1914. The original plan for the
church that was intended for
the workers in Santa Coloma
de Cervello was abandoned
because its commissioner,
Eusebi Güell, ran out of
money before the Catalan
architect was able to complete
it. Nevertheless, in 2005
UNESCO recognized the crypt
as a World Heritage Site.
Works of Zaha Hadid
Works of Zaha Hadid Galaxy Soho
Possibly the most space-age-
looking of all Hadid’s works,
this spooling creation
comprises four domed
structures linked by a
ravishing mixture of bridges
and platforms flowing around
what can only be called a
central canyon. Like a
smoothed off mille-feuille, the
18-storey retail, office and
entertainment colossus boasts
interior courts intended to
reflect traditional Chinese
architecture – although it has
been criticised by local
heritage groups for flattening
an area of historic hutongs.
Works of Zaha Hadid Guangzhou
opera house
“Like pebbles in a stream
smoothed by erosion,” was
how Hadid herself described
this £130m building, which
was designed to blend in
perfectly with its riverside
setting. Regarded as one of
the most alluring opera
houses ever built, it boasted a
folded, flowing glass structure
that let light flood in.

All swooping curves and

flowing space, this 619,000-
square-foot complex in the
capital of Azerbaijan won the
London Design Museum
award in 2014; one judge
called it “as pure and sexy as
Marilyn’s blown skirt”. The
softly folded roof shelters a
museum, an auditorium and a
multi-purpose hall. Reports put
the cost at $250m.
Works of Zaha Hadid
Bridge Pavilion
Inspired by gladioli and the
waterway beneath it, Hadid’s first
completed bridge throws 280
metres of fibre-glass reinforced
concrete across the river Ebro. Half
pedestrian walkway, half exhibition
area, the covered structure was
built to link the La Almozara
neighbourhood to the site of the
2008 Zaragoza Expo. “A
magnificent and truly ennobling way
to cross a river on foot,” was the
Guardian’s verdict.

Museum, Bilbao
The Guggenheim’s satellite in
Bilbao, Spain, multiplied the
museum’s exhibition space in a
mountain of stone, glass, and
titanium that follows the
contours of the Nervión river.
Design and construction of the
Guggenheim Bilbao went largely
unnoticed in the press, so the
building’s 1997 opening
produced an explosion of
publicity, securing Gehry’s place
as a master among architects
and jolting the Bilbao economy.

Walt Disney Concert
Hall
Gehry was shortlisted to devise
a new home for the Los Angeles
Philharmonic in 1988; the
project, the Walt Disney Concert
Hall, finally opened in 2003.
Today critics and the public
agree that the iconic building
was worth the wait. Reflecting
Gehry’s longtime passion for
sailing, the structure’s exterior
features expanses of stainless
steel that billow above Grand
Avenue, while inside, similarly
shaped panels of Douglas fir
line the auditorium.

Dancing House
The Prague offices of the Dutch insurance
company Nationale-Nederlanden is also
known as Fred and Ginger, thanks to its
signature pair of towers, which seem to
resemble a couple dancing. The 1996

metal mesh and glass and a concrete
cylinder, was a collaboration between
Gehry and local architect Vlado Miluníc

Louis Vuitton Foundation

An art museum and cultural centre,
sponsored by Louis Vuitton, the building
shows Gehry's commitment to fluid
design. The building's appearance, due
to its many diverging planes of glass,
actually changes depending on the time
of day. As he states, this was done "in
order to give the impression of
something ephemeral and continually
changing".

Libeskind’s master plan for the
site, the Plaza is bounded by
Fulton, Greenwich and Church
Streets to the North, West and
East respectively and Tower 3
to the south. It links the
procession of green, urban
spaces that extend along Park

Altavista De Boracay is a resort that stands on an area with lush
greenery and panoramic views of the sea. Its tropical Filipino
architecture draws inspiration from the ancient balanghais of
Mindanao, where the structures have undulating roofs to create a
unique multi-angular façade. The resort also has a spa and
wellness center, a man-made lake, a garden, and an open space for
activities such as horseback riding.
