Field Trip to Karang Sambung

June 23rd – July 1st 2018

Department of Physics, Geophysics Specialty

Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences,
University of Indonesia
Background
As geophysics students, being able to understand the fundamentals of physics and
geology is a must. Basic of the physics principle has been given very comprehensively both
theoretically and experimentally at Physics Department, University of Indonesia. On the
geological side, it is very important for us to be able to understand properties of rocks in
order to be able to apply geophysical methods in exploration. After we understand the
theory, we can use our knowledge to compare and apply it (practically) in the real life
situation. Therefore, geology and geophysics lecturers suggest that the students shall do a
field trip to Karangsambung.
Karangsambung is an area known as the real field of comprehensive geological
phenomenon. We can see and learn about many things in this area. Hopefully, this field trip to
Karangsambung can enhance our knowledge in Geology after our first field trip to West Java.
Universities from all around Indonesia which have geology and geophysics major will have to
agree that doing a field trip to Karangsambung is the most important requirement to be a good
geoscientist. The other reason we choose this location is because our seniors have used this
location annually since 2007. And based on their recommendation, this place offers many
benefits to students who want to pursue their career in geosciences.
After all, we really hope that this field trip will help the participants in understanding
geology deeply. And since geology and geophysics are two fields which cannot be
separated, we hope this field trip will also help the participants who want to study
Geophysics Exploration and prepare themselves for their career in geoscience.

Objective
1. To apply theoretical concepts that we learn in class on the field.
2. To have a better understanding on geophysical concepts (geology structure and gravity
method).
3. To improve the students’ knowledge on geological field method.
4. To practice geology mapping on the field.
5. To study the geology of Karangsambung.
6. To build team work on the field.
Title and Theme of the Activity
“The Importance of Understanding Structural Geology and Applying Gravity Methods’
Measurement on The Field.”

Goal
The gravity acquisition data of Jatibungkus field will be processed and be combined with
the previous acquisition from our seniors (Physics 2013, 2014) to be published at Indonesian
Petroleum Association (IPA) Convention & Exhibition.
