SIXTH INTERNATIONAL BIENNALE

OF CHURCH ARTS

Veliko Tarnovo, 2019

From 18th October to 18th November 2019 the city of Veliko Tarnovo will be the
venue for the SIXTH INTERNATIONAL BIENNALE OF CHURCH ARTS.
This exhibition is a forum of contemporary art within the field of Orthodox Church
arts: iconography, mural painting, woodcarving, mosaics and other forms of art related to the
temple and the worship practices.
The event is held under the auspices of the Rector of St. Cyril and St. Methodius
University of Veliko Tarnovo.

University of Veliko Tarnovo, the Faculty of Theology at the University of Veliko Tarnovo
PARTNERS: Тhe Holy Veliko Turnovo Metropolitanate, the Union of Bulgarian
Artists and Orthodox Center „Prof. Dr. Totyu Koev”.

AIM: As a traditional forum for cultural communication, the biennial popularizes


contemporary works in the field of Orthodox ecclesiastic art.

PARTICIPANTS: Artists working in the field of Church arts.

PRIZES:
 Prize of the Veliko Tarnovo Municipality amounting to BGN 1000
 Prize of the Veliko Tarnovo University amounting to 500 BGN
 Prize of the club "Patriarch Evtimii" (Veliko Tarnovo) amounting to 500 BGN

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION:


Participants can exhibit
 icon painting – up to three works;
 woodcarving (monumental and plastic miniatures) – up to three works, or three
boards with photographs and drawings of works already realized;
 murals and mosaics – up to three works, and/or three boards with photographs
and drawings of works already realized;
 liturgical utensils, textile, graphics, miniatures and others – up to three works
or drawings;
 and can give multimedia presentations of realized works.

The works and photograph boards to be presented should be in a form allowing for
immediate display.

APPLICATIONS for participation must be received by 15th September 2019 by


email at churchart.vtu@abv.bg, or by post at Svetla Ivanova, Faculty of Theology, St.
Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo, 2 Teodosij Turnovski Str.
Participants must also send in quality photographs (JPG or RGB format of not
less than 300 dpi) of their works in electronic form or by post. The works will be selected by
a jury assembled of specialists nominated by the organizers and the partners of the Biennale.
The selection results will be announced on 30 September 2019 at the following websites:
http://pbfvt.pravoslavie.bg (the Orthodox Theological Faculty’s own site) and
www.pravoslavie.bg.

The works for the exhibition should be received between 10th October and 12th
October 2019 at the following address: Rafael Mihajlov Exhibition Complex, 1 Rafael
Mihajlov Str, Veliko Turnovo 5000.
Every participant cover his expenses for the transportation of their works to and from
Veliko Turnovo.*
Works and photograph boards not complying with the requirements will not be
considered. The following information should be found on the back of each work or
photograph board: Autor, a title of the work, year of creation, size, material, technique used,
and value (if any).
After the closing of the exhibition, the works will be returned to each participant
either personally, or will be sent to the participant’s postal address at the participant’s
expense.
Organizers are not responsible for works not claimed within one month since the
exhibition closing.

Every participating artist will receive a certificate of attendance at the Biennale.

http://pbfvt.pravoslavie.bg (the Orthodox Theological Faculty) and www.pravoslavie.bg,
and on the Church Arts Facebook page: Църковни изкуства.
