great time to make some
necessary changes in the garden, starting
with those fallen leaves.
While composting is a great way to reuse
organic matter, you may want to avoid intro-
ducing blighted foliage (scabby apple or pear
leaves, shot-holed Prunus foliage, blackened
tomato stems, fruit or leaves) into the home
composter, as you run the risk of reintroduc-
ing these fungal diseases come spring.
Instead, bag this material and send it to the
green waste pile at the local transfer station,
where it will eventually be sterilized by hot
composting and used in topsoil blends.
It is also time to pull your summer flowers
(before they turn to mush), lift those tender
plants (Brugmansia, Tibouchina, heliotrope)
you may want to keep for next year and dig
up those summer bulbs and tubers (canna

examined in a criminal trial.
“Which senior BC Liberal officials were involved
in the sale of BC Rail?” Krog said. “What did the
premier know and when did he know it?”
De Jong said a public inquiry isn’t needed be-
cause the special prosecutor in the case had already
searched the evidence and found that politicians
were not implicated in Basi and Virk’s activities.
Both men pleaded guilty to leaking information
about the BC Rail bid process and accepting mon-
ey and travel from a U.S. railway company. That
ended the trial just before former finance minister
Gary Collins was to testify.
Other political hopefuls chimed in as well.
Chris Delaney, spokesman for the newly formed
BC First Party, said the plea bargain “smells of in-
terference at the highest levels.”
Delaney has made similar allegations about gov-
ernment meddling into Elections BC in his capac-
ity as organizer of the Fight HST petition and re-
call campaigns.
Wilf Hanni, leader of the upstart BC Heritage
Party, said the B.C. Liberal government sold off
the BC Rail freight division for $1 billion, when it
was worth four times that.
“That has to be the fire sale of fire sales,” Hanni
said, adding it was worse than the final fate of the
fast ferries built under the previous NDP govern-
ment.
