THE PROBLEM

This chapter presents the background and purpose of the study,

theoretical framework, and conceptual framework, statement of the problem, scope

and limitations and definition of terms.

Background and Purpose of the Study

Education plays a vital role in shaping tomorrow’s leaders. Not only can

we become a better nation by acquiring the skills necessary to be productive

members of a civilized society. Our world is constantly changing and it requires a

society that is well versed in understanding the problems deriving from culture

differences and tolerance of one another’s belief and perceptions. We are

dealing with systematic problems in education, economic, government, religion

and culture differences.1

According to Nelson Mandela, Education is the most powerful weapon

which you can use to change the world.2

Many language learners focus a lot on speaking. They don’t spend as

much effort on quietly listening.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research method, setting of the study, subject of

the study, sources of data, procedure of the study, and statistical treatment that

the researchers used in this study.

Research Design

The researchers used the descriptive method of research for this study.

The researchers made test question was used to determine the variables

associated to the levels of vocabulary skill among the respondents.

According to Estolas, the descriptive method is use to know, to discover,

and interpret “what it is”. It reveals the condition of relationship that exist

practices that prevail, belief or point of view or attitude that are being felt,

practices that are held and effects that are being observe.1

Descriptive method was used because researchers believed that the

method is suited for the study. It involves analysis and interpretation of the

respondents perception on the variables associated with their academic

performance.

The researchers deemed it significant to use descriptive design because

they wanted to determine a clear picture of the listening skills of Grade six Pupils

in Filipino.
