Analysis of statically determinate beams, frames and columns and their

Assignment title
design principles

Purpose of this assignment

This assignment allows students to analyse beams and frames for bending moments and shear forces
and use those parameters to design the basic elements and different materials.

Parameters
Each student should use the appropriate parameters allocated for them in each question.

Task 2

2.1 - (LO 2, AC 2.1)

Using Macaulay’s method, calculate the maximum vertical deflection for the beam in Figure 1.2
and identify that position.
(E = 200 GPa and the beam has a rectangular section of 90mm x 30mm)

2.2 - (LO 2, AC 2.1)

Using Mohr’s theorems calculate the maximum rotation for the beam in Figure 1.2 and identify
that position.
(E = 200 GPa and the beam has a rectangular section of 90mm x 30mm)

Task 3

3.1 - (LO 3, AC 3.1)

Differentiate short and slender columns.

3.2 - (LO 3, AC 3.1)

Explain how the effective length varies for different supports at the two ends of the column.

3.3 - (LO 3, AC 3.1)

Find the Euler’s buckling load for a column which has a length of Q meters and having a material
compressive strength of 25 MPa. The column has been fixed in both ends. Classify the column as
short or slender.
(E = 200 GPa and the column has a rectangular section of 30mm x 10mm)

Task 4

4.1 - (LO 4, AC 4.1)

Check the suitability of the 254 × 254 × 167 kgm−1 UC section in S275 steel to resist a design
axial compression force of 1000P kN accordance with Euro Code 3. Assume the column is pinned
at both ends and that its height is Q meters. Assume any reasonable value for missing data and
clearly mention them in your report.

4.2 - (LO 4, AC 4.2)

A simply supported reinforced concrete beam of a class room building should be designed
according to Euro Code 2. Design the beam for flexure and shear.

Length of the beam is Q meters,

The gap between 2 consecutive beams are 3.5 m,
Design life time is 50 years,
The building is located nearby the coastal side,
Take fck as 25 MPa and fyk as 460 MPa,
For mild steel take fywk as 250 MPa,
Assume any reasonable value for missing data and clearly mention them in your report.

4.3 - (LO 4, AC 4.3)

Design a simply supported timber beam with cross-section 100 x 250 mm for flexure and shear
accordance with Euro Code 5.

Clear span = Q m,
Timber of strength class C24 according to EN 338,
Design uniformly distributed load of (P/2) kN/m (medium-term),
Service class 1.
Assume any reasonable value for missing data and clearly mention them in your report.
4.4 - (LO 4, AC 4.4)

Design a masonry load bearing wall accordance with Euro Code 6.

Assume Group 1 clay brick masonry units of standard format size (width 102.5mm)
Wall height = (Q/2) m,
fb = 42,5 N/mm2,
Design vertical load = 150 kN/m with no applied eccentricity of loading,
