Brick, Brick What Do You Want To Be?

Damdi 2018 ISBN 9788968010842 Acqn 29111
Pb 15x23cm 416pp col ills £29.95

Material in architecture is generally associated with its individual and distinctive main
characteristic, a reduced description which often undermines the ambiguity and true meaning of
materiality. Material is often employed based on or with fundamental focus on expressing this
preconceived identity, leaving space and material devaluated of their opportunities and
possibilities. This publication examines materials in architecture through the eyes of the architects
themselves. Interviews with 33 practices from around the world - including OFIS arhitekti,
UNStudio, Casanova + Hernandez, and CEBRA -shed light on current paradigm shifts in brick
and tile, wood, and glass.

In the 15th anniversary issue of Log, number 44, architects representing diverse perspectives
each question, in different ways, the place of architecture and architectural discourse in the world
today. As 2018 Venice Biennale Golden Lion recipient Kenneth Frampton asks, "What are
architects for in a destitute time?" Similarly, in Zack Saunders's response to the exhibition
#digitaldisobediences, Francois Roche wonders, for "posthuman, postqueers, postdummies . . .
what does it mean to be an architect?" In this issue, Rafael Moneo searches for a new historical
paradigm no longer centered on modernism; Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto evaluate the
forces that shape their architectural project; Pier Vittorio Aureli offers a comprehensive history of
the way the grid has been used to organize the socioeconomics of cities; Michelle Chang
proposes vagueness as a critical position and source of creativity; and Michael Meredith curates
44 "low-resolution" houses. George Baird and xx voto respond to Log 42: "Disorienting
Phenomenology" and ANY 4: "Architecture and the Feminine," respectively. Renee Kemp-Rotan
and Ludovico Centis evaluate monuments to the complicated American histories of racial injustice
and nuclear weapons development. Alicia Imperiale and Christophe Van Gerrewey explore works
by Luigi Moretti and OMA. Log 44 also takes stock of the World Trade Center site 15 years after
the competition to rebuild Ground Zero in an interview with Daniel Libeskind and an analysis by
Fred Bernstein.

OASE 101 - Microcosm - Searching for the City in Its Interiors

nai010 publishers 2018 ISBN 9789462084698 Acqn 29203
Pb 17x24cm 128pp col ills £22.50

In the modern city, everyday life is increasingly moving towards the inside of buildings. The
interiors of department stores, market halls, administration buildings, museums, or theatres are
part of the experience of the urban dweller. Every inner world of the city has its own atmosphere
and representative architectural language that supports its specific societal significance. In
contemporary practice, these differences have largely disappeared. The more the exterior of
buildings is invested with spectacular gestures, the more banal their interiors seem to become.
Rather than registering this disappearance, this issue of OASE examines a range of strategies
and design instruments for the public urban interior.

Junya Ishigami is among the most experimental of the younger generation of Japanese
architects. His designs often take inspiration from plants and natural phenomena, resulting in
radical curves and poetic visions seemingly doomed to remain in the realm of installation art or
sketches, structures that should be impossible to realise. Ishigami, however, is gaining a fast-
growing international reputation, with recent commissions in places like Moscow and Sydney.
'PLOT 08' features works and projects from the last decade; from "KAIT Workshop" to "Water
Garden", more than 20 projects are included. Please note that all texts in this publication are

Villages and Towns #7 – Germany

A.D.A.Edita Tokyo Co. Ltd. 2018 ISBN 9784871404600 Acqn 29269
Pb 23x30cm 136pp £36

Edited and photographed by Yukio Futagawa, this seventh instalment in a series of ten has been
republished after 40 years. Taking Germany as its subject, it examines how settlements in this
region of Europe have remained relatively intact and are therefore also more studied compared to
other countries. This volume features Rothenburg, Goslar, and Celle, towns that today still retain
the forms of settlement dating from the 15th to 18th centuries nearly perfectly. Established in
medieval times as defensive settlements, the historical core of these three towns is impressively
well preserved, a fact documented here in detail through photographs, diagrams, and maps.

faster, more dominant infrastructures can ever be completely tamed, there is already a movement
in recent years towards softer, greener, slower infrastructures that can improve social life while
addressing ecological offenses. This special issue looks ahead to a brighter future for urban

Arquitectura Viva 209 - Bajo Tiera. Paisages Excavados

Avisa 2018 no ISBN 29295
Pb 24x30cm 80pp col ills £20

Along with the hut, the cave is the most primordial archetype of architecture. One is built, the
other is dug; the first tends to be light, the second clings to gravity; the former is raised by joining
pieces - it is tectonic - whereas the latter is shaped with the earth that is emerges from - it is
stereotomic. These are parallelisms that issue 209 tackles through an essay by Dominique
Perrault and five buildings excavated in the landscape, like the Tirpitz Bunker Museum (Denmark)
by BIG, the Museum Fort Vechten (Netherlands), the Cava Arcari (Vicenza) by David
Chipperfield, and the House-Restaurant crypt by Junya Ishigami in Yamaguchi (Japan).

Archis Foundation 2018 ISBN 9789077966648 Acqn 29301

The biennial as format and phenomenon was declared dead or obsolete time and again, it was
discarded as commercial, promotional, touristic, capitalistic, wasteful, white supremacist, and
what not. In the end, that is not the issue. The issue is the tension between expectations and
pretension, between agency and result. Volume #54 looks at what biennials promise and what we
actually get; they look at who is pulling the strings and for whom they are made. But first and
foremost they check what a biennial can do.

Oslo - Learning to Fly

Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing 2018 ISBN 9789187543982 Acqn 28650

More has happened in Oslo over the last 40 years than in the previous 1000. Oslo - Learning to
Fly is first and foremost a documentation of the transformation of this former sleepy village into
what Jones Lang LaSalle has called "A new emerging world city". Oslo has seen continuous
growth since 1984, and has been among the fastest growing cities in Europe for decades. The
story spans from the conversion of a major shipyard into the award-winning, multi-use borough of
Aker Brygge in the late 1980s, and into 2030, when the transformation to a post-industrial city will
be complete. This book is the first comprehensive presentation of Oslo's radical transformation.

Norwegian and Danish approaches to designing with nature is the first feature of this issue. Local
architects point to a variety of sustainability concerns in the region, resulting in architecture that is
sensitive and responsive, cities that are inclusive and liveable. With works by Studio Olafur
Eliasson, Dorte Mandrup, Sverre Fehn, Manthey Kula, and Atelier Oslo. The second feature
deals with the Rail Corridor in Singapore, a former railway line that has become an informal public
space in the city. From 2015, design professionals were invited to develop proposals in hopes of
establishing strategies and tools to ensure integration with surrounding communities and shape
the quality of experience.

Footprint 23 - The Architecture Of Logistics

Jap Sam 2018 ISBN 9789492852076 Acqn 29239
Pb 19x26cm 162pp 60col ills £22

Neoliberalism is a many-headed monster. It can hold different drives without altering its internal
coherence. It grows through crisis and instability. Within its flexible order, drastically opposite
forces are able to coexist and mutually stimulate each other: globalisation expands at the same
pace as nationalist and populist movements; the circulation of people increases alongside the
intensification of migratory policies; shared economies and collaborative consumption develop
apace with the multiplication of copyrights and patents; common knowledge and resources
proliferate as does the parasitism of private entrepreneurship.

Integrating differences within a homeostatic system of economic competition, the monster of

neoliberalism turns whatever it devours into commensurable and exchangeable quantities. Any
equivalence becomes possible. Any juxtaposition becomes profitable. Any connection becomes
valuable. However, the further this dismembered body enlarges, while assimilating new forces
and exchanges, the more it needs to improve its nervous and circulatory system to stay alive:
boats, containers, trucks, warehouses, department stores, harbours, train yards, airports, cargo
terminals, communication centres, satellite stations, and all the material conditions that improve
flux and trade while ensuring the integrity of commodities across its distant limbs.

This issue of Footprint meditates on logistics and its architecture of exchange as the essential
lymph of neoliberalism. Registering and managing the circulation of people, goods and
information across the planet, the architecture of logistics could be considered the litmus paper
from which one could read and understand territories, populations and societal assemblages.
Using textual and visual materials, our ambition is to unfold the multivalences of the logistical
apparatus, dissecting its buildings and spaces, its technologies and labour relations, its historical
evolutions as well as its future projections.

nai010 publishers 2018 ISBN 9789462084599 Acqn 29097

Our cities consist of buildings that are introverted and not mixed with urban life. They are closed.
How to open them? How can we introduce pockets for encounters, for streams of circulation, for
green areas, for tunnels of cooling...? What logics can be imagined in our towers to allow for this
openness? Using stepped floors? Creating grottos? Splitting towers? Twisting blocks? Every
hypothesis leads to a series of interventions. How far can we go before the tower collapses,
before it is unaffordable? Together, these series form an army of towers that contributes to a
more porous city.

Francis Kere - Primary Elements

Avisa 2018 ISBN 9788409043927 Acqn 29086
Hb 21x28cm 240pp col ills £35

A native of Burkina Faso, Francis Kere has based his architecture practice in Berlin but his work
remains deeply rooted in his home country. He uses universal principles and elements that make
it suitable for completely different contexts, like that of his adoptive city. Kere's body of work is
exemplary in its use of limited resources and sustainable techniques, and he has become the
leader of a new generation determined to make the world better by working for those who have
less. This monograph takes stock of his complete oeuvre, from the school built in his native
village to the Serpentine Gallery pavilion, in an attempt to articulate it through stereotomic,
tectonic, and textile principles.
