20- You recently registered for a course, and you cannot attend the class
for some reasons.

Write a letter to your course instructor and in your letter

• introduce yourself
• explain the situation
• and say what action you would like to take.

Dear professor Moss,

I am Sandy Lee, an undergraduate student of the department of Electrical and

Computer Engineering. At the beginning of this semester, I registered for one
of your courses, African Literature and Culture. It is a two-hour course held on
every Thursday afternoon. Yesterday, I received a notice from my department
that a major course, Computer Principle, would be changed to Thursday
afternoon. This major course conspicuously influences my credits and it is
very important to me. Unfortunately, I can not study your course this
semester.

Because of your reputation and my enthusiasm in literature, I hope I could

study this course in the next semester. I also heard that another course of
yours, China Literature, is held every Friday afternoon. If the registration of
this course has not closed yet, I will be so glad to participate in your class.

Sorry to bother you, your help will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely yours,

Sandy Lee

17- Some people have come to believe that children’s misbehaviour in

life is due to their genetic characteristics, while others believe their
misbehaviour is the direct result of ineffective upbringing.

What’s your opinion?

Use specific reasons to support your opinion.

Children misbehave because something vital is missing in their nurturing.

Genetics is not the only valid excuse for a child’s misbehaviour. These
mothers and fathers allow young children to stray from moral equity, challenge
authority and use violence as a resolution for anger. Nurturing should include
deterrence from wickedness and inducement of morality.

When a child does something wrong it is the parents’ responsibility to

discourage the repetition of bad conduct and encourage the understanding
that the action committed was wrong. Parental guidance is necessary for a
child’s survival because children are born into the world knowing nothing, and
thus, adapt to the world’s surroundings with the help of these great leaders.
However, telling a child what is wrong is not enough. A young person needs
an explanation for the mistakes that he/she makes and must be given a
reason not to repeat it otherwise, he or she is prone to believe one can do
anything one wants.

A child misbehaves because he/she does not comprehend that certain actions
are wrong. As parents neglect to make children aware of these errors, elders
in turn become guilty of the child’s transgressions. Civilization trusts in parents
to raise the young to recognize lies, insubordination and aggression for what it
is: misbehaviour. Grown-ups must help kids see deceit as a form of
misbehaviour. Parents should reiterate that the right way to treat his/her
mother and father is with respect.

Ultimately I believe that genetic characteristics inherited from parents can not
be a good excuse for the misconduct of a child and the society should see
parents as the root of a child’s misbehavior.

age and should spend most of their time on school studies. Others believe that young
children should spend most of their time playing. Compare these two views. Which
