Area & Volume Calculation

1. Find out the quantities in 100 cft cement concrete.

2. Find out the quantities in 100 cft brick masonry. Use a factor of safety 1.2 for wastage.

3. Suppose, you have 50 bags of cement. What volume of concrete you can make from this 50 bags
of cement with a mix ratio 1: 1.25: 2.50 .

4. Suppose you have 5000 Nos. of full size brick. You want to make a brick wall.

(a) What will be the volume of brickwork?

(b) Determine the no. of cement bag & volume of sand if mortar mix ratio is 1:4 .

5. The following perpendicular offsets were taken at 10 meters intervals from a survey line to an
irregular boundary line: 3.25, 5.60, 4.20, 6.65, 8.75, 6.20, 3.25, 4.20, 5.65 .

Calculate area by i) average ordinate rule ii) trapezoidal rule iii) simpson’s rule

6. Repeat question (5) for intervals 15 meters and 0, 2.65, 3.80, 3.75, 4.65, 3.60, 4.95, 5.85 .

8. A railway embankment is 10 m wide with side slopes 1.5 to 1. Assuming the ground to be level in
a direction transverse to the centre line, calculate the volume contained in a length of 120 meters, the
center heights at 20 m intervals being in meters 2.2, 3.7, 3.8, 4.0, 3.8, 2.8, 2.5 .

9. A railway embankment 400 m long is 12 m wide at the formation level and has the side slope 2
to 1. The ground levels at every 100 m along the center line are as under:

The formation level at zero chainage is 207.00 and the embankment has a rising gradient of 1 in
100. The ground is level across the center line. Calculate the volume of earthwork.

10. Find out the volume of earthwork in a road cutting 120 meters long from the following data:

The formation width 10 meters, side slope 1 to 1, average depth of cutting along the center line
is 5 m. Slopes of ground in cross-section 10 to 1 .
11. A bed width of a channel is 5 m and top width of banks are 3m for left and 1.5 m for right. Side
slopes of excavation is 1:1 and of bank is 1.5:1 . Height of bank from bed is 2.55 m throughout. The
longitudinal slope of the bed of the channel is 1 in 5000.

11. An excavation is to be made for a reservoir 20 m long 12 m wide at the bottom, having the side
of the excavation slope at 2 horizontal to 1 vertical. Calculate the volume of excavation if the
depth is 4 meters. The ground surface is level before excavation.

12. Calculate the volume of the excavation shown in the fig, the side slopes being 1.5 horizontal to 1
vertical and the original ground surface slopping at 1 in 10 in the direction of the center line of
the excavation.

13. A road embankment 10 m wide at the formation level, with side slopes of 2 to 1 and with an
average height of 5 m is constructed with an average gradient 1 in 40 from contour 220 meters
to 280 meters. Find the volume of earth work.

14. The following notes refer to three level cross-sections at two sections 50 m apart.
