Lawang Sewu

Lawang Sewu is a historical building in Indonesia, located in the city of


Semarang, Central Java. This building, previously was the office of the
Nederlands-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij or NIS. It was built in 1904 and
completed in 1907. The building is located at the Tugu Muda roundabout
previously named Wilhelminaplein.

Local people call it Lawang Sewu because the building has very many doors,
although in reality, the number of doors does not reach a thousand. This
building has many tall and wide windows, so that people often take it as a door
(Lawang).

During the struggle period this building had its own historical record, which
was during the five-day Battle event in Semarang (October 14 - October 19
1945). This old building is the location of a great battle between the youth of
AMKA or the Youth Force of the Railway against Kempetai and Kidobutai,
Japan. Therefore the Government of Semarang with Mayor Decree No.
650/50/1992, entered Lawang Sewu as one of 102 ancient or historic buildings
in the city of Semarang that should be protected.

 Not only the Dutch government building, Lawang Sewu is also the cruelest
prison during the Japanese occupation.
 Lawang Sewu building architecture is designed by European architects. The
building materials used were imported directly from Europe.
 There is an old well in the courtyard of the Lawang Sewu building. It is said
that from this well, there was often the sound of screaming, pain, fear. even
though, the well was locked and never opened.
 There are prisons and bunkers that have a hallway called the ghost hallway.
According to the local community, if you stay and squat there, you will be
able to see human-shaped shadows with bright green eyes running on all
fours.
 In the prison room in Lawang Sewu often smells strange and mysterious,
like the rancid smell of fresh blood.
 There were sightings in the big gate before heading to the main room. Some
claimed to have seen big black hands, others saw pocong with broken faces.
And someothers saw a white shadow that could penetrate the wall.
 In fact the number of door holes in Lawang Sewu is only 429, with doors
more than 1,200 (some doors have two doors, even four doors).
 Not only for mystery tours, Lawang Sewu is also visited by young couples to
take pre-wedding photos.
 Lawang Sewu is included in the second most haunted building in Asia. The
first is a former school building in Hong Kong.
 In 2013 dunia lain event was held at Lawang Sewu and broadcasted on
television. one of the participant, died three days after joining the event.
