NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

1. INTRODUCTION

Nature has many great lessons for human to study and learn from it. We should

look into nature as if it is our teacher. Many architects and designers are in believe

now that nature can be a powerful and trustful sources as frank Lloyd wrought said : “

Study nature , love nature , stays close to nature . it will never fail you . “

“ What we learn from nature ?

 Nature uses life friendly manufacturing process.

 Nature relies on self assembly .

 Nature fits form to function.

 Nature recycles everything.

There is question “ Why copy nature ? “

Leonardo da Vinci said about nature : “ The genius of man may make various

inventions , encompassing with various instruments one and the same end ; but it will

never discover a more beautiful , a more economical , or a more direct one than

nature’s , since in her inventions nothing is wanting and nothing is superfluous. “

By recognizing the principles , patterns and processes of nature , we can

create intuitively elegant and aesthetic design at will rather than by chance .

Because nature happens around and around within us continuously , we know its

processes by heart . Nature is the one touchstone all human beings relate and

respond to.

2. DIFFERENT WAYS OF TAKING NATURE AS

INSPIRATION

 INSPIRATION-VISUAL / CONCEPTUAL /

COMPUTATIONAL

 ORGANIC DESIGN

 MIMICRY

 BIOMIMICRY

 BIONICS

5
NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

2.1 INSPIRATION

Three kind of inspiration can be renowned in architecture and design, and each

kind plays different role. All these three provide a spectrum whose understanding is

critical for the progress of design. These three levels of inspiration are named as

visual , conceptual , and computational. Visual inspiration is relatively well

understood and widely in case , a picture of various organism , or their living

organism , or their system , for example a picture of sea sea turtle shell can be used

to shape a reinforced concrete for a large span roof structure in an exhibition

building.

visual inspiration can produce useful result especially in design from the aesthetic

points of design.

Turtle shell in Nature Exhibition hall inspired

from turtle shell

Conceptual inspiration occurs when Architect & designer uses a principle found in

nature in design , for an example , the biological principle . Visual Inspiration is skin-

deep . Conceptual inspiration is abstract and difficult to use.

2.2 ORGANIC DESIGN

The main idea of organic design is inspiration from the principles of living nature

. This often led to free and expressive forms. New age, architects and designers

have taken the concept of organic design to new heights by employing newer

materials & technology in the application of natural shapes , rhythm & composition to

their buildings. The re-emergence of organic design represents a new freedom of

thought . This is affecting most fields of design – products , furniture , lighting , textile

design , architecture , landscape & interior design . More liberated and imaginative

forms , unacceptable to major corporate client a few years ago , are now being

encouraged and accepted.

Organic design of interiors uses natural components for generating these styles

by minimal usage of synthetic components . An organic decorator really should be

conscious of the kind of organic elements available in the marketplace and in nature

which might be utilized to replace those synthetic materials.

Organic shapes are shapes with natural look and a flowing and curving

appearance . For this reason , they are often also referred to as Curvilinear Shapes .

Examples of organic shapes include the shapes of leaves , plants , and animals . a

shape that visually suggests nature or natural forces . also know is biomorphic shape

Organic shapes have natural , less well – defined edges .

( think : an amoeba , or a cloud )

8
NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

Approach :

 A respect for natural materials

 Blend into the surroundings

 An honest expression of the function of the building

Characteristics :

 The design approach is inspired by nature & the built form grows out of the site ,

emerging like an organism from the seed of the nature .

 It is visual poetic , radial in design , multifaceted & surprising , distinctive but

flexible & environmentally conscious .

 Organic Architecture is said to be the mother of all architecture - sustainable or

bio architecture , alternative architecture or any other .

Some examples of this movement are : Kaufman Residence “ Falling water “

(Pennsylvania) , Sydney Opera House ( Sydney ) , Casa Mila ( Barcelona ) ,

Lotus Temple ( New Delhi )

NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

Nature – of the earth

Under this definition architecture and design is derived from nature in the following

ways :

 Materials - using material from nature without significant alteration . These

materials include wood , stone , soil , sand , and water .

 Forms – creating forms that reflect the form of the surrounding landscape and its
features .

 Low – impact materials : non toxic , sustainably produced or recycled materials

which require little energy to process .

 Energy efficiency : manufacturing processes and produce products which require

less energy .

 Quality and Durability : longer – lasting and better – functioning products will have
to be replaced less frequently , reducing the impact of producing replacements .

Design for Reuse and recycling :

Design impact measures for total carbon footprint and life-cycle assessment for any

resources used are increasingly required and available . many are complex , but

some give quick and accurate whole – earth estimates of impacts .

NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

ISSUES :

 System Understanding:
Organic design is evolving fast , but there is a risk of it becoming a superficial

statement engrossed in high-tech science and technology & organic forms being

superimposed from the outside rather than evolving like life from within . We need

to learn to use natural forms & materials from observing living forms & creatures

which are the very forms of life and growth that inspires organic architecture and

design.

 Creation Problems :
Organic shapes , whether used in art or in landscaping , can be difficult to

create. A curving or flowing line that curves too far can look man-made and

detract from the natural look. This makes patterns of this style somewhat time

consuming to make.Whereas geometric shapes provide clear guidelines for how

a person should construct them , there is no set pattern for how to make an

organic one . This gives a person a lot of flexibility in terms of how he designs

and what he can create , but it also makes a challenging to describe a precisely

recreate an organic pattern that is already made. Description tend to rely more on

comparisons or the impressions someone gets from looking at the shape , not a

mathematical equations or numbers . This is an issue because impressions and

comparisons are somewhat objective and are largely based on a person’s unique

experiences.

11
NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

2.3 IDEOLOGY
Natural patterns provided inspiration for architects and designers . As man

struggled to understand his world he observed nature and learned from it , and used

it accordingly . This is most easily seen in more primitive communities where

everything is made by hand from the materials available , and decorated with specific

motifs from the natural surroundings that they know so well. After civilization and

invention of new tools their architectural forms the change but still they had some

idea from nature . in pervious part of humans was limited with the tools and available

material in pre- history and they were inspiring from nature because of these

limitation but new technologies were giving more opportunity to architects and

designers to create free with less limitation and because of this design idea and

concept are not getting inspiration from nature and building forms and structure are

became more free , these facilities are motive to create a competition between

architects and designers in their design forms and styles.

Architecture and Interior Design is no different in receiving inspiration from nature,

and it often goes deeper than imitating just the surface features of nature . some

designer have explored the structure of trees , for example : the roots , branches and

delivery system to design buildings that utilize the same efficiencies .

3. ORIGIN & BACKGROUND OF

ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

The first part serves as an introduction and illustrates the origin and background of

organic architecture as it emerged in different countries at the beginning of the 20th

century . The externalization of form in the neo- style and the rise of new building

techniques fired many architects of that period to create a new style in line with their

times. Amid art Nouveau , Functionalism , and Constructivism the concept of organic

architecture was born . The pioneer of the direction drew inspiration from principles

derived from living nature . Each of them stressed different aspects , but seen in

relation to one another their individual approaches constitute a coherent totality . was

one of the first to introduce to concept of ‘ organic architecture ‘ after closely studying

nature , he concluded that form always follow function and made this principle the

guideline for his architectural designs . moreover , he brought his geometrical

building masses to life by means ofa reach , organic ornamentation .

Louis Sullivan ( 1856 – 1924 )

Louis Sullivan broadened both the content and the language of organic architecture

in many directions . He expanded the concept ‘organic’ to denote the relation

between the building and its environment , the continuity of internal and external

space and the use of building materials in accordance with their own nature .

13
NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

Antino Gaudi ( 1852- 1926)

 Introduced in architecture the principle of

‘ Metamorphosis’

 That he derived from Goethe , This enabled him to

express development processes that are inherent to

nature , culture and the human consciousness . By

contemplating these forms an awareness for

interrelations and the ability to think in processes can

be developed . These forms were often based on the

forces at play in the construction .

 During the last phase of his life he developed a natural geometry of double

curved surfaces that he applied in the church of the Sagrada Familia .

14
NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

Frank Lloyd Wright ( 1869-1959)

 The term “ Organic Architecture “ was invented by

the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

 Frank Lloyd Wright used the word “organic” to

describe his philosophy of architecture . it was an

extension of the teachings of his mentor , Louis

Sullivan , whose slogan “ Form Follow Function “

became the mantra of modern architecture .

Wright changed this phase to “ Form and

Function are one “ , “ claiming Nature as the

ultimate model “.

 Although the word “organic” is has became a

buzzword for something that occur naturally, when

connected to architecture it takes on a new

meaning. Organic Architecture is not a style of

imitation , but rather a reinterpretation of

nature’s principles to build form more natural than

nature itself.

 Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the best architect to express himself in sculptural
form.

5. IMPLEMANTATION

5.1 Steel House :

Architect and Visionary Robert Brunno has been balding his organic , fantastic ,

metallic Steel House since 1974 . Overlooking a cliff near Lubbock , Texas , The

huge structure has grown from a spindly metal tripod of beams to a massive

accumulation of rusted steel.

5.2 Shell House :

Mexican Architect Javier Senosiain used reinforcement to construct the belove

nautilus – like home for a Mexican couple who wanted something , well , a little

different . They got a more than little – the swirling , snail-like structure looks like no

other abode , inside or out.

6. BOOK CASE STUDIES

6.1. Falling water house

Frank Lloyd Wright and organic

architecture would be complete

without mentioning the magnificent

Falling water House near Pittsburgh ,

PA . Designed by Wright for

department store magnate Edgar

Kaufmann Sr. in 1935 , the project

took 2 years to complete.

Falling water was revolutionary for its day in

that instead of pushing nature inside , Wright

incorporated it into the heart of the home.

For many , Falling water epitomizes what

architecture can and should be . it’s said that

the house inspired Ayn Rand to write her

epic novel , The Fountainhead .

For Wright , organic architecture should

incorporate :

 Designs based on nature

 Natural building material

 And , architectural plans that integrate

buildings with nature .

19
NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

A classic example of organic architecture , Falling water is both integrated into the

landscape and designed to echo the shapes of the landscape where it is nestled .

The dynamic building is suspended over a falls , which pours down from underneath

one of Wright’s bold projecting terrace . The building seems to grow out of the

landscape . Wright allows a boulder from the site to penetrate the floor of the house ,

so that the natural rock foundation actually merged with the interior of the house .

This boulder forms the living room fireplace . with design element , Wright blends

rock , fire and water. Wright also used natural materials to build Falling water . He

opened the quarry directly at the site , so that the stone used in the house is local.

Both inside and outside ,Wright’s materials are native to the area . This does not

mean he shunned modern building material and engineering .

6.2 Chenequa Residence :

Hypnotizing Curving lines and Intensive Use of Organic Materials .

Robert Harvey Oshtaz Architect

designed the Chenequa Residence , a

family home showcasing an original and

very dynamic design . The building as a

whole can not be entirely understood

while analyzing it from a single

standpoint ; its diversity exposes fun

features throughout . According to the

architects , the project requires two

stages of implementation : “ The extant

building constitutes the first plase of

construction and includes the primary

living area for the family . The second

phase of construction to be undertaken at a later point will consist of a glass roofed

swimming pool area and a suite for visiting grandparents . “

The design of the residence is a

practical and visually interactive :

“After parking on the circular driveway

, the approach to the house is by foot

and follows a small stone wall which

continuous underneath a low hemlock

clad roof . Upon walking through the

glass door , the compression of the low entry explodes into a celebration of light and

form. A large circular opening in the floor exposes a new level below and the roof

lifts and spins out of view , followed by a cantilevered staircase . A solid stone core at

the center of it all, like a choreographer directing the dance around it . “

6.3 Nari Gnadhi

 Dossabhai Gnadhi was born in 1934 in Surat to a

Zoroastrian Parsi from Bombay .

 Studied architecture at J.J. College of Architecture ,

Mumbai for five years in early 1950s . He traveled to

USA to apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright at the

Taliesin and spent five years there. After Wright’s

death in 1959 , Nari left Taliesin and studied pottery

at the Kent State University for two years .

 Nari’s Ideologies and works were in sharp contrast to the mainstream

architectural thinking . his works display a distinctive Organic character . They

appear to have evolved as a response to the context , remaining strongly rooted

to the site and being very well connected to the surroundings . Nari’s works

display highly skilled craftsmanship and structural ingenuity . He has stacked

earthen pots to construct arches out of them and built stairs out of brick arches .

Throughout his works you see extraordinary use of stone , brick , wood ,glass

and leather .

 He created built spaces that remained forever connected to their unbuilt

surroundings allowing sunlight and wind to interact with the inside and animate

the space with time . Each house is a series of dialog between the built and the

unbuilt.

23
NATURE INSPIRED INTERIOR (Organic Interior Design) 2016

Bungalow at Mud Island

The whole project was executed on site ,

the construction went on far more than

14 years .

The House is open , embedded and

secured with dense vegetation and palm

all around . The three vaulted house sits

right in the cocoon of coconut trees .

With walk made out of chips and pieces

of stones , skylights made from glass

strips , the curved walls adorned with

clay tiles and figurative motifs. The

interiors are like a cave , with punctures

at various places getting in the light. The

space flows unobstructed from one area

to the other . The structure blends itself

with nature which is like fabric which

folds itself and wraps around the three

vaults . The vaults are perforated with

skylights and vent tunnels which drive in

fresh air and filter light inside the

structure . The mother of pearls , oyster shells were used as cladding material . The

house is decorated with terracotta sculptures . Various small earthwork figurines are

spread throughout the house and the garden area . throughout the house , there is

prominent use of chips of stone , brick , stained glass , broken wine bottles , mother

of pearl shells .

7.CASE STUDY

7.1 . Angle – Indian

Architects Serie: Blue Frog

Building Type : Bar /

Restaurant / Performance

Space

Location – Lower Parel

,Mumbai

A large north lit industrial warehouse within the old mill district in Mumbai is to be

converted into a complex of sound surrounding studios and acoustic lounge. The

lounge will consist of a restaurant , bar and a live stage . Beyond this amalgamation

of provision , blue frog seeks to stage an acoustic experience per excellence . The

deep structure that was employed is of a cellular organization composed of circles of

varying sizes in plan approximating a horse-shoe configuration . the differential

extrusion of the circles encapsulated at different levels as tiered cylindrical seating

booths , allow the eye level of dinners and standing patrons to be distributed across

staggered levels that increase in height away from the stage. These booths seats

between 4-10 people and are arranged around a open center that can either double

up as a potential 360 degrees stage or accommodate standing patrons , bringing

them closer to the main stage to create an intimate viewing experience . These

Mahogany paneled cylindrical booths maintain not only uninterrupted view to the

stage , but also constant distance between diners irrespective of how crowded

lounge gets .

The undulating height of the seating booths is gently modulated by a glowing acrylic

resin surface , which unifies the disparate types together and retains the presence of

the architecture even in the midst of the spectacle of a state of the art sound and light

show at the Blue Frog .

8 . CONCLUSION :

 We can take inspiration from nature in different ways , like form of texture ,

pattern , natural materials , natural light , color , natural elements .

 We can placed natural texture on the wall. In flooring we use stone . the main

thing is design should connect to the nature. Relationship between built and

unbuilt area .

 Different branching pattern use after study provide good aesthetic effect and

supporting structure .

 We can use curve and smooth shape walls, furniture in design.
