All technical documentation, including this technical manual, data sheets, details, specifications and
technical bulletins are available online at www.soprema.ca, in the Technical References section.

We invite you to visit www.soprema.ca regularly to obtain our most recent updates.

How do you find the products you need?

In a just few minutes, you can easily find the best roofing system for your project from SOPREMA’s
multiple solutions. All roofing solutions are presented according to the type of deck, the roofing system
specified and the membrane system application method. This classification helps you choose the best
roofing system for your project.

With the goal of building sustainable roofing systems, SOPREMA favours conventional systems
(granulated finish), which allow for quick resurfacing during repair work. They also have other benefits
during installation and for their entire lifespan, especially:

• quick and effective visual inspection of surfaces;

• ease of maintenance and repair;
• reduction of weight on the structure due to the lightweight system;
• the insulation is protected by the membrane.

SOPREMA, the standard in the waterproofing industry
SOPREMA is an international manufacturing business specialized in making waterproofing products
for the building and civil engineering sectors. Founded in 1908 in Strasbourg, France, SOPREMA now
operates in more than 80 countries.

SOPREMA established operations in Canada in 1978, opening its first production facility and head office
in Drummondville, Quebec in 1984. The Canadian division has shown remarkable growth, and now
includes six North American production facilities manufacturing a wide variety of building envelope
products for industrial, commercial, institutional and residential construction.
SOPREMA has been standing out from the competition with its 100 years roofing system

The design and specifications of today’s roofing systems must take into account the issues of energy
conservation, sustainability, optimal utilization of raw materials and waste reduction. One innovative
SOPREMA solution in this area consists of the re-covering of an existing waterproofing system. This
approach helps prolong the useful life of the roof and reduces the quantity of materials sent to
landfill sites.

Good design, selection of quality materials and proper installation are essential when recovering a
roofing system.

For more information on this subject, consult the Roofing Repair Guide found in this manual.

BEFORE

AFTER
INNOVATION

SOPREMA always listens carefully to what

construction industry professionals have to
say. The company strives to design
waterproofing products that satisfy the
needs and requirements of its customers.

The research and development centre in

Drummondville is home to a strategic
development team made up of about
30 experts in the areas of research, technical
support and marketing. The team ensures
the design, manufacturing and marketing
of innovative products characterized by
improved sustainability and simplified
installation to make the applicators tasks
easier.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

SOPREMA has quickly carved itself a niche

among the leaders in the building envelope
industry thanks to the expertise and
accessibility of its technical team.
More than 60 technicians and technical
representatives throughout Canada help
building professionals in their projects,
from design to repair.

Besides offering unequalled technical

support, SOPREMA has undertaken the
training of applicators specialized in
installing waterproofing products. SOPREMA
offers many different training programs,
including PAQ+S, in all Canadian provinces.
Both theoretical and practical, these training
programs teach safe and efficient application
methods to ensure that waterproofing systems
last longer.
PROTECTION

SOPREMA’s “We’ve got you covered” slogan

is very appropriate. First and foremost,
SOPREMA waterproofing products protect
buildings so that their occupants are
sheltered.

In the long term, SOPREMA products

also protect the investments of building
owners. What’s more, installers and
building professionals can preserve their
reputations when standing by their decisions
concerning our products. Furthermore,
SOPREMA’S superior quality products help
protect the environment.

When you choose SOPREMA, you are

choosing reliability. At SOPREMA, we’ve
got you covered.

ENVIRONMENT

SOPREMA’s R&D  policy, highly oriented

towards sustainable development, reduces
the company’s effect on the environment
through the use of renewable resources
in its production and its plants, as well as
through innovative practices focusing on
health and safety.

SOPREMA chose the Ginkgo biloba leaf to

symbolize its environmental initiative. This
ancient tree, which originated in the Far
East, represents sustainability, health,
beauty and resistance to attack.

SOPREMA, the world specialist in water-

proofing, has created the ECO STRUCTION
label, which identifies products and services
that specifically exemplify the company’s
approach to sustainable development.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

All material manufacturers have a duty to reflect

on the impact of their products on nature and
human health—from manufacturing, throughout
the life span, to demolition. For SOPREMA, this
reflection resulted in the creation, among other
things, of an international environmental policy.

Its main objective is to take into account the impact

of SOPREMA’s products on the environment and
health from their design to their destruction, but
also to promote a true “environmental culture”
within the company.

SOPREMA’s sustainable development efforts are

far from a new development. In January 1997,
SOPREMA was the first company in its field to
obtain ISO 14001 certification. This environmental
management standard requires us to implement
an environmental policy, and especially, to monitor it: setting environmental objectives, monitoring
environmental impacts and risks, creating emergency preparedness plans, etc.

EN 16001, the standard for energy management systems, guarantees that SOPREMA is complying with
the most recent practices in the area of energy management. Furthermore, its plant in Drummondville, Qc
was the first site in Canada and the first in the SOPREMA group to have successfully completed the
accreditation process for the EN 16001 standard.

ECO-CONCEPTION: A MAJOR DRIVING FORCE

SOPREMA has worked for over 20 years to limit the impact of its products and its industrial activities on
the environment and human health through all stages of a building’s life cycle (construction, operation
and demolition).

SOPREMA’S R&D teams work closely with international, private and public research laboratories to
develop innovative solutions that meet new industry requirements.

Because protecting you is our responsibility

• Products integrating natural resources and recycled raw materials;
• Products using sustainable resources;
• Products and services which have a positive impact on the environment;
• Products designed to limit the negative impact on the health of manufacturers and end users.

SOPREMA created the Eco Struction logo to identify its environmentally friendly
products and services.

SOPREMA chose the Ginkgo biloba leaf to symbolize its environmental initiative.
This extremely ancient tree represents sustainability, health, resistance to
aggression, endurance in the face of environmental stress and aesthetics.
BITUMEN

SOPREMA’s SBS modified bitumen technology has

been proving its durability since 1908. It is by far
the most reliable technology in the industry. Most
of SOPREMA’s roofing/waterproofing membranes
are manufactured with SBS modified bitumen
and include polyester, glass mat or composite
reinforcement. Our experienced research and
development team developed these membranes,
whose unique superior-quality composition makes
them exceptionally durable and strong.

Water repellent, strong and durable, bitumen has

been the material of choice for waterproofing
requirements since time immemorial. Bitumen is a
natural, solid material that remains on the cutting
edge of technology today.

SOPREMA’s research and development centres

have always tried to optimize the mechanical
properties of bituminous waterproofing membranes
to give them unequalled weather resistance.

Bitumen is said to be an elastomer when it is modified by synthetic compounds or styrene-

butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymers. The quality of SBS bitumen is determined by the properties of the
added elastomers and by the formulations used in the mixture.

The benefits of elastomeric bitumen:

– excellent elasticity and flexibility;
– characteristic properties at high and low temperatures;
– excellent adherence to the substrate;
– reliable and solid waterproofing for joints;
– durability.

REINFORCEMENT

SOPREMA waterproofing membranes are manufactured with three types of reinforcement. A good
roofing system always combines the strengths of each reinforcement type to maximize its properties
and effectively resist roofing movement caused by the drastic temperature extremes of the North
American climate.

GLASS MAT POLYESTER

Glass mat reinforcement Polyester reinforcement has a

provides roofing systems with great capacity to stretch and is
a lot of dimensional stability. highly puncture resistant.

COMPOSITE

Composite reinforcement combines the benefits of glass mat and polyester

reinforcement. This gives it the best resistance to weather and temperature variation.
SOPREMA High Performance roofing/waterproofing systems all include at least one
membrane composed of composite reinforcement. Look for the HP logo to identify
these unique systems.

Composite reinforcement used in manufacturing membranes for our

High Performance systems is subject to standard ASTM D6162.

THREE-PLY WOVEN POLYETHYLENE

Some SOPREMA self-adhesive membranes include a surface reinforcement. These

are composed of self-adhesive bitumen covered on the surface with three-ply woven
polyethylene. Specifically this includes SOPRAVAP’R vapour barrier and LASTOBOND,
SHIELD and SHIELD HT roof underlayments.

This three-ply woven polyethylene resists UV rays for up to 90 days, and its anti-skid
surface helps ensure worker safety during installation. As with the reinforcements
described above, this material is very flexible and reacts very well to movement.
DUO SELVEDGE TECHNOLOGY

For safe installation, several base sheet

membranes are equipped with the unique DUO
SELVEDGE technology developed and patented by
SOPREMA. The first 3 inches of DUO SELVEDGE
are sealed with self-adhesive to protect membrane
components under the base sheet membrane
from the torch flame. The last inch of the selvedge
is then heat-welded or safely sealed with a hot
air gun.

SOPREMA membranes are available in several choices of colours.*

GRANULATED OTHER

* Some colours are available by special order and require longer delivery times.
Ask your representative for more details.
HIGH PERFORMANCE SYSTEMS

SOPREMA High Performance Roofing/waterproofing systems were designed with one basic criteria
in mind: durability. All these systems are composed of at least one membrane manufactured with
robust composite reinforcement providing the best resistance to movements caused by temperature
variations.

TRAFFIC CAP sheet membranes of the High Performance roofing waterproofing systems are
manufactured with a composite reinforcement that makes them even stronger and more weather
resistant.

Composite reinforcement used in manufacturing membranes for our High Performance systems are
subject to standard ASTM D6162.

SOPREMA provides several membrane combinations in every section of the manual, to build the
waterproofing system tailored to your project. The High Performance logo helps you to discover

EAVE PROTECTORS

EAVE PROTECTORS
UNDERLAYMENT PROTECTION
LASTOBOND roof underlayment membranes are often used on residential roofs and under metal clading
materials to ensure waterproofing of high-risk areas. SOPREMA has designed a complete line of self-
adhesive waterproofing membranes offering unique performance.

UNDERLAYMENT PROTECTION TYPES OF SUPPORTS ACCEPTED: CHARACTERISTICS

WOOD*

LASTOBOND 195 Yes The LASTOBOND 195 and 240 roof underlayment membranes are composed
of self-adhesive SBS modified bitumen, glass mat reinforcement and have
a sanded surface.

LASTOBOND 240 Yes The LASTOBOND 195 membrane has a width of 910 mm (36 in).

The LASTOBOND 240 membrane has a width of 1120 mm (45 in).

LASTOBOND SHIELD Yes The LASTOBOND SHIELD self-adhesive roof underlayment membrane provides
increased performance thanks to a flexible self-adhesive and self-sealing
bitumen composition. The surface of the membrane is covered with a
three-ply woven polyethylene.

The LASTOBOND SHIELD is also offered in widths of 910 mm

or 1120 mm (36 in or 45 in).

LASTOBOND SHIELD HT Yes In addition to offering all the advantages of the LASTOBOND SHIELD membrane,
the LASTOBOND SHIELD HT waterproofing membrane is resistant to temperatures
as high as 105°C. This makes LASTOBOND SHIELD HT the perfect solution for
ensuring the waterproofing of the roof under metal panels, since its
bituminous mass is more resistant to the heat conducted by the metal.

*Do not use on a wood plank deck.
