1 Lab 0 -- Introduction to IMAGINE 2013

2
3 1. Load Imagine software
4 IMAGINE software (s/w) is a multi-function remote sensing/geographic information system analysis. The
5 purpose of lab0 is to introduce the s/w to you. To load IMAGINE s/w, click “Start/Programs/ERDAS IMAGINE

6 2013/ERDAS IMAGINE 2013” or if there is a shortcut icon, for “ERDAS IMAGINE 2013” on the computer
7 screen, double-click on the icon. It will take the program a few minutes to load (Fig. 1). The IMAGINE s/w relies on
8 a Graphical-User Interface (GUI pronounced “gooey”) in which most of the commands are located in the menu or
9 activated by “clicking” on icon buttons.

13 2. Display two images

14 The view window allows one to display remotely sensed image. You can locate the image file (with an
15 extension .img) on your computer drive and folder/subfolder, and drag and drop into the viewer window. Let us load
16 “alav2a103362910-o1b2g_u.img” into the viewer window (Fig. 2). This is a false infrared (IR) color image showing
17 a portion of North Carolina. Zoom-in around location pointed by an white arrow. (The white was added to show the
18 location. In your displayed, there was no white arrow.) To view the image as Fig. 2, move the cursor into the viewer
19 window, right-click to open the drop down menu, and select “Fit to Frame” from the list (the first line of the 2 nd
20 section from bottom). Answer questions 1-3.

21 “dem_of_greenmill_run_from_nc_floodmapping_program.img” is a digital elevation model (DEM) data for the

22 creek of Greenmill Run of Greenville, North Carolina. Of the displayed DEM image, the brighter the tone is, the
23 higher the elevation value is. The creek is a tributary of Tar River, NC. A small section of the creek runs crossing
24 the road or 10th Street in front of A-Wing of Brewster Building. Answer questions 4-6.

4 3. Exit the Imagine

5 To exit the IMAGINE, click on File/Exit (near the upper left corner) or “×” near the upper right corner (Fig. 1),
6 or “Ctrl+Q” from the keyboard. When prompted by the computer, answer "Yes" to confirm the quit, and answer
7 "No" to whether you want to print out your log file.

8 4. Questions

9 Use printscreen or screen-capture functions to copy and paste displayed “alav2a103362910-o1b2g_u.img” and
10 “dem_of_greenmill_run_from_nc_floodmapping_program.img” into a MS/Word file for turning in. Each correctly
11 copied/pasted image is credited with 1 point.

15 the drag and drop method as the answer for this question.)

16 4. (0.5 point) Define digital elevation model (Hint: search online).

17 5. (0.5 point) On the printscreen of Greenmill Run, draw or outline the creek. (Hint: the dark feature near upper
