REFLECTION
Book of Deuteronomy 26,4-10; Letter to the Romans 10,8-13; Saint Luke 4,1-13.
You are trash!…or better than anyone else?

We must rely on faith in Jesus to weigh up the reality and power of devil. He
faced him many times, not only in the temptations in the desert.
And we must rely in our reasoning and personal experience to understand
the nature and the intentions of the Evil One: temptation reveals the nature of
our enemy. But it also reveals the reality of our situation, and our identity as
sons and daughters of God.

1. In his public life, Jesus was in a constant struggle with evil powers.
He performed exorcism, he drove out demons whose possession made persons
powerless to act, but He also cured many sick persons: blind, deaf, lame or
mentally disabled. Healing the sick meant much more than curing a physical
illness. The evil, fatal effects of original sin, and our personal sins, were being
wiped away. For the people of his time, this was clear, as it relates to the Jewish
idea that human sin brought every distress into the world.

Particularly, Christ is interested in making clear that, with Him, we have won victory over Satan and all his
works.
Remember that He took upon Himself the human condition, becoming human in everything like all of us, except in sin… but
temptation was included in the package! For our consolation and instruction, Christ Himself allowed the devil to tempt Him
When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time. Yes, the devil returned to Him again in many
circumstances. Some examples of these subsequent temptations:
* The Pharisees asked Jesus to perform a miracle to show that God approved of him (Mk 8:11).
* Save yourself if you are God’s Son! Come on down from the cross! (Mt 27:40).
* After feeding the crowd with an abundance of food, the people there said, ‘Surely this is the Prophet who was to come into the
world!’ Jesus knew that they were about to come and seize him in order to make him king by force; so he went off again to the
hills by himself (Jn 6:14-15).
Perhaps these examples will help us to understand that the intervention of the devil is not an extraordinary or
unusual thing, but rather an interference particularly vigorous in the moments of spiritual joy or
helplessness.
But especially in one of his encounters with the devil, Jesus gives an important key about the tactics of the evil one. Satan was
speaking through Peter when this disciple protested that events like Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross would happen (Mk
8:27–33).
Therefore, He rebuked Peter. He called Peter Satan, Jesus could see clearly that the devil was speaking through Peter, putting
Him into a test, inviting Him to do something very, very reasonable: to save your life, to eat when you are hungry or to
demonstrate your power, your knowledge or your skills. At the heart of the temptations, notes Pope Benedict XVI in Jesus of
Nazareth, is the act of pushing God aside because we perceive him as secondary, if not actually superfluous and annoying, in
comparison with all the apparently far more urgent matters that fill our lives.
His poisoned message, since the original sin is: Now you do not deserve (or perhaps, you don't really need?) to be his disciple.
We are rarely tempted to flatly deny the existence of God or to speak badly of Him. Rather, we are tempted to gradually replace
His will, the highest good, with lesser goods: pleasure, comfort, safety or position. To use the resources, talents and wealth or
influence we have for our personal benefits.
We can presume that his sinister action is at work where the denial of God becomes radical, subtle and absurd; where lies
become powerful and hypocritical in the face of evident truth; where love is smothered by cold, cruel selfishness; where Christ’s
name is attacked with conscious, rebellious hatred, where the Spirit of the Gospel is watered down and rejected where despair
is affirmed as the last word; and so forth (Paul VI, Nov. 15, 1972).

2. The modern psychology and philosophy rule out the existence of devil in the world. Many Catholics agree with
that same sentiment. A good number of theologians prefer to present Satan as a literary construct and metaphor rather than an
actual fallen angel. The increasing understanding of the workings of the human mind and the unconscious has put belief in spirits
under increasing scrutiny. Some sociologists of religion today explain apparent supernatural manifestations as projections of a
certain group dynamic.
To make matters worse, while popular culture dismisses the existence of evil spirits, nonetheless, it has a predilection for being
entertained by fantasies about demons. Filmmakers and writers sensationalize and trivialize demonic activity and exorcisms. As a
result, those who have no other source of knowledge about these topics judge them to be fictional or superstitious nonsense.
Many Catholics have a restricted idea about the activity of the devil, believing that it is limited to some extraordinary and
dramatic moments of possession, when a person has lost part or all of the control of their actions and decisions to an evil spirit
which is perceived to be working within that person’s body and mind. Many people use the term possession loosely, confusing it
with the meaning of oppression, anguish or obsession.

Obsession anguish and oppression are perceived to come from outside the person’s mind. They can be so mild as to be almost
unperceived by the individual, keeping a person physically or mentally stressed for a long time.
What experience left the Even if we grant the existence and activity of the devil in our lives, there is an ambiguous overlap in
the symptoms of oppression with those of some classified mental illnesses. It is not always easy to distinguish between people
who are suffering from a mental illness and those who are afflicted by demons.
In their assessments of persons who claim affliction by evil spirits, psychiatrists (both Christian and atheist) will discover that
some are suffering from a mental disorder. Among these disorders are schizophrenia, depressive psychosis, Dissociative
Identity Disorder and hysterical personality disorder.
Ironically, the refusal of so many to admit the true identity of the devil is itself a dark triumph for the great deceiver. But his
personality, his reality as a person, is revealed by his permanent intention: to separate us from God and from our neighbor.
3. It is primarily through deception and lies that the devil leads us astray from God. The irony of the strategy of the devil
is that after tempting us to sin, he becomes our accuser. The name “the devil,” comes from the Greek word diabolos (Latin,
diabolus), which means “slanderer” or “accuser.” He seeks to accuse and slander each of us before God in his relentless desire
to destroy souls. In doing so he has a basis on the reality: we have no merits and we are sinners who often give into temptation.
These deceptions and lies are dangerous because they reduce other people and even the material world to things that can be
used purely for my personal gain.
Jesus warns about the return of the same evil spirit with more enthusiasm if we are not spiritually equipped to challenge this
setback. Jesus reminded us that only a constant prayer and fasting could empower us to fight this battle against the powers of
darkness
We are always worrying about tomorrow. The Khoi San culture of South Africa, reverse our normal linear mode of time. They
say: The past is in front of me because I can see it. The future is behind me because I cannot see it. And I am walking
backwards through my life. When we forget our past, we tend to think that we are alone in the present, that God is not with us.
Because Jesus knew that the God who fed Israel in the desert would not let his Son starve. In today’s First Reading, Moses
exhorts the people to remember their history and to offer God their first fruits in gratitude. This is the kind of remembering that
we do every time we celebrate the Eucharist: Jesus’ love for us, His teachings, His miracles, and His compassion. We remember
his death and resurrection.
In our Ascetical Examination we share our Intellectual Acceptance of the Gospel and our Resolution of the Conflicts through
the Gospel Lesson. Nothing less than two opportunities to review the moments (possibly many, probably unnoticed) when I
have not been explicitly using the Word of God, as Jesus used it in the temptations in the desert.
The Second Reading today states what is required in the face of temptation: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be
saved. In simple words, to take into account that you are not alone.
Knowing the enemy will help us to defeat him. It is good to know how things look from his perspective. What follows could be
an action plan for a fatally efficient devil.
◄ Operating Rules for Effective Temptations ►
Rule 1. Good Timing. Pick the right time to induce in your victim’s heart corrosive thoughts and desires. As a general rule,
look for the time your victim is enjoying a positive spiritual moment; tell him that his neighbors fall short of too many things.
You can also take advantage of your victim’s moments of apathy or dryness; in this case, go to Rules 2, 3 or 4.
Rule 2. Over-generalizing. Use thoughts containing "always" and "never" as in You are always distracted. This is likely to
lead your victim into discussing the overgeneralization rather than the concrete issue and insure further insecurity. This is very
effective at creating the impression of isolation and preventing the victim from asking for forgiveness.
Rule 3. Escalating. Move quickly from the issue, to questioning of personality, to interpret the smallest of your victim's sins
and faults as evidence of the structural impossibility of a healthy change and conversion. Take advantage of a mistake to bring
into his mind the wrongs of the past. This will create an intractable chaos, the impossibility of analyzing the causes of his errors,
let alone to apply the Gospel to solve the conflicts of passions.
Rule 4. Over-dramatizing. Exaggerate the importance of any issue with thoughts such as This proves that you have not been
called by God. Never concede that an issue is not absolutely critical. Make a clever use of the many obsessions that strike
human beings!
Rule 5. Comparing with others. Sometimes, depending on the sensitivity of your victim, it is important to bring to his mind
the success, the faith and the virtue of other persons. This will promote his jealousy, envy and frustration. This is one of the best
weapons in the case of vain or arrogant people.
Rule 6. Playing down the sins. This is a great instrument. You can use this approach to justify almost any activity against the
Kingdom of God. Use it especially in the so-called secret sins. For example, impure thoughts or desires, masturbation, cyber-
pornography, gossiping or lying. Shallow or immature persons (irrespective of their age) are perfect victims of this approach.
Do not forget to playing down Observance; tell your victim that charity is not harmed by our small infidelities (you better use
the word flexibilities) in “external practices”.
Rule 7. Labeling thoughts. By prompting your victim to labeling himself in a negative manner, you will create the impression
that he is a hopeless case. Labels, such as "sick," "insecure," or "unworthy," are particularly effective in obscuring the identity
of a child of God. In difficult cases, at least plant the doubt.
Rule 8 (GOLDEN RULE). Be discreet. Remember: Wise as serpents and swift as hawks.

REFLEXIÓN

Deuteronomio 26,4-10; Carta a los Romanos 10,8-13; Lucas 4,1-13.

¡No eres más que basura! …

Entonces, Cristo reprendió a Pedro, llamándole Satanás.

Regla 8 (REGLA DE ORO). Se discreto. Recuerda: Astutos como serpientes y veloces como halcones.
