THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON XA HISTORY

Eighty years ago,

BMWs were so
superior that both
the Soviets and
Americans copied
them (not to men-
tion the Chinese).
The fighting in
North Africa in
1942 was the start of the whole thing. Field Marshal
Erwin Rommel’s flathead BMWs didn’t have any
problems with overheating or desert sand getting
stuck in drive chains, and the Wehrmacht soldiers
didn’t get concussed from bouncing around on rigid
frames. The US Army asked Harley-Davidson to
come up with a carbon copy of the side-valve BMW
R71. The result was the XA, shorthand for Experi-
mental Army.
There were plenty of improvements over the WLA V-
twin. The XA was a shaft drive, carried larger 4.1-gal-
lon fuel tanks, absorbed bumps via rear suspension,
and had a four-speed gearbox. Perhaps most impor-
tantly, those cylinders sticking out reportedly kept
the oil temperature at 50 C cooler than the WLA.
Some versions also had Harley-Davidson’s first-ever
telescopic fork, years before the 1949 Hydra-Glide.
There were also a few experimental XAs with over-
head valves.
The US Army built 1,011 XAs for testing. The Army
also tested the experimental Indian 841, which was
basically a Moto Guzzi copy with transverse V-twin
and a shaft drive. But current events changed the
Army’s plans. Rommel was getting his behind kicked
in Africa because Hitler figured he should be able to
wage war without the supplies that went to Stal-
ingrad and the rest of the Russian front. Also, the
Willys Jeep had become a good alternative to mo-
torcycles, and the XA was a lot more expensive than
the standard V-twin. The US Army paid around a
thousand dollars each per XA, a price which includ-
ed design, tooling, development, etc. “We practically
