PAKISTAN RAILWAYS
Pakistan Railways provides

an important mode of
Transportation to the farthest
corners of the country and
bring them closer for
Business, sight seeing,
pilgrimage and education. It has been a great integrating force and
forms the life line of the country by catering to its needs for large
scale movement of passenger and freight.
The possibility of Karachi as a sea port was first noticed in the mid
of 19th century and Sir Henry Edward Frere who was appointed
Commissioner of Sind after its annexation with Bombay in 1847
sought permission from Lord Dalhousie to begin survey of sea
port. He also initiated the survey for Railway line in 1858. It was
proposed that a railway line from Karachi City to Kotri, steam
navigation up the river Indus and river Chenab upto Multan and
from there a railway line to Lahore and beyond be constructed.
It was on 13th May, 1861 that first railway line was opened for
public traffic between Karachi City and Kotri, the distance of
105 miles. The line between Karachi City and Keamari was
opened on 16.6.1889. By 1897 the line from the sea port at
Keamari to Kotri was doubled.

The railway line from Peshawar to Karachi closely follows

Alexander’s line of March through the Hindu Kush mountain range
in the north to the sea port in the south. Different sections on
existing main line from Peshawar to Lahore and Multan and
branch lines were constructed in the last quarter of 19th century
and early years of 20th century.
The 4 sections i.e.Scinde (Sindh) railways, Indian Flotilla Company

Punjab railway and Delhi railways working in a single company
were later on amalgamated into Scinde, Punjab & Delhi Railways
Company and were purchased by the Secretary of State for India
in 1885 and in January, 1886 it was named North Western State
Railways which was later on renamed as North Western Railways.
After the independence of Pakistan, as a sovereign country, this
was finally named as Pakistan Railways.
At the time of partition, North Western Railway’s 1847 route mile

was transferred to India leaving route miles of 5048 km to
Pakistan. In 1954 the railway line was extended to Mardan and
Charsada section and in 1956 Jacobabad-Kashmore 2’-6’’ line was
converted into broad gauge. Kot-Adu-Kashmore line was
constructed between 1969 to 1973 providing an alternate route
from Karachi to up country. In 2006 the meter guage section of
140 km from Mirpurkhas (Sindh), to the Indian border at
Khokhropar was converted to broad gauge.

LOCATION
The Academy is situated in the hub of Central Punjab, in the heart of Lahore;
it is linked with the main corridor line between Karachi and Peshawar.
The Campus has a historic significance in providing well trained personnel to
Pakistan Railways.

INTRODUCTION
The Pakistan Railway Academy originated as the

Walton Training School of the legendary North Western
Railway and in 1929, the small training school
established in 1925 was named after Col. C.E. Walton,
the Agent (as the General Manager was then known) of
the North Western Railways. In no time, the Walton
Training School became the hub of Lahore and came to
acquire its name as WALTON.
As its field transformed into lush green lawns and the saplings spread
out their thickening branches, the Walton Training School took on the
character and repute of its parent organization, the North Western Railway,
which came to symbolize the best traditions of service, innovation,
development, and organizational excellence. The performance standards of
this institution received international acclaim when in 1954, its premises were
selected by ESCFE, (Economic Commission for Asia & Far East) a United
Nations agency, to establish their Regional Railway Training Center for
Training Railway officers and senior supervisors of Asia and the Far East in
Signaling and Advanced Railway Operations. Control of the Center was
transferred to the Government of Pakistan in January 1958. Renamed in July,
1982 as the Pakistan Inter-Regional Railway Training College, it was merged
with the Research & Development Centre, the new-born Institute of Railway
Management and the Walton Training School in May, 1983 in the latter’s
premises to establish the Directorate of Research and Training. The
Directorate of Research and Training was re-named as the Pakistan Railway
Academy in July, 2000.

FACILITIES:
9 35 well-equipped class rooms, including dedicated rooms for special

subjects, Model Rooms equipped with life-size and scale working
models for hands on training and a networked computer lab.
9 A well-stocked and continually expending lending and reference
research library containing technical professional, management,
English and Urdu Literature, recreation and general titles, to meet the
needs of the participants and to promote the reading habit, and reading
room subscribing to a wide selection of newspapers, periodical.

9 There are 7 hostels with accommodation for more than 500 trainees
including an exclusive hostel with air-conditioned and well-equipped
rooms for International Students.
9 Free mess facilities are provided to all trainees.

MISSION
¾ To fulfill the training needs of the Pakistan Railways, viz. to impart

quality in-house training to its officers and staff required to meet its
objectives; to fulfill the training needs of the Afro-Asian member
countries of the ESCAP (Economic & Social Commission for Asia
Pacific) region.
¾ To inculcate amongst the officers and staff a spirit and high sense to
public service and business ethics consonant with the ideals of public
service as well as business venture organizational efficiency, cost-
consciousness and responsible spending in the pursuit of the
organization’s Mission.
¾ To conduct research in all fields related to Railway operations and

development which would further the accomplishment.
¾ To keep the Pakistan Railways personnel abreast of the usage of the

new system & requirements introduced in Pakistan Railways.

ISO 9001 : 2000 CERTIFICATION
Academy has been awarded ISO.9001-2000 certificate by the TUV

CERT Germany. This will establish its recognition as an International
Academy / College and subsequently raising its standard to a
professional University. This ISO 9001-2000 certificate is being re-
validated.

ORGANIZATION
The Academy is headed by a Director General, assisted by the
following Joint Directors:-

& Buildings)

Lighting & Overhead Electrification.
The above joint directors are assisted by Assistant Directors of the

respective disciplines and an adequate number of Instructors drawn
mostly from the serving railway staff selected for their competence and
ability to impart training.
One of the Directors from above Joint Directors is assigned the job of
Training and Coordination by the Director General to manage the
Administration of the campus / hostels etc. and to look after any
problem faced by the participants. He is assisted by Assistant
Directors.

TRAINING TECHNIQUES
9 Training is imparted according to the latest techniques which
encourage effective communication between the trainer and the
trainees and is more participative in nature. Participants are
encouraged to discuss the issues thread bare and question-answer
session is arranged at the end of each lecture.
9 Audio-Visual teaching aids are used for effective training.
9 The lectures in the class are further supported by practical

demonstration in the Model Rooms and Laboratories.
9 The training imparted in the Railway Institutions is primarily for the

railway operation is accordance with the Rules, Manuals (Standard
Operation Procedures) and Instructions / Maintenance Reference
Books received with new equipment and technology.
9 However, in addition to that new and modern concepts of training to

enhance the productivity of workers as well as officers by changing
training environment of these experts in this field.
9 Imparting practical training by means of field visits in the respective

discipline and hands-on practical working under experienced staff.
9 The training, at the completion of the syllabus, is followed by strict

passing out examinations. The examination hall is looked after, during
the exams, by reliable supervisors to prevent adoption of unfair means.
9 The examination hall is monitored by Close circuit cameras by the

Director General and the Joint Directors.

While visiting each working place, the Probationary Officers shall focus on
operation and documentation in that place. After completion of each phase of
training, the Probationary Officers will individually prepare a written report
giving their observations and these reports are forwarded to this Academy for
further analysis7h8j. These reports are reviewed by the Assessment board at
the end of training programme at the Academy.

HEALTH CARE
¾ To ensure proper & immediate medical help one Senior Medical Officer
is based & resides in the Campus for 24 hours medical aid to the
trainees as well as staff members who are residing in the campus
premises.
¾ The medical facilities of minor cases are handled at the campus where
a ten bedded hospital is provided.
¾ Trainees requiring further treatment are sent to the main Railway
hospital, adjacent to the Railway Headquarters Office. A Senior Most
Doctor is working as head of health Department i.e. Chief Medical &
Health Officer with Assistance of Medical Superintendent and Dy.
Medical Superintendent.
¾ Cairns hospital comprises of 210 beds including 11 Wards like
Neuro, Medical, Eye, Surgery, Peadsatrics, General etc.
¾ Full fledge Laboratory have facility of all Investigations along with
Radiology tests like X-Ray, Ultrasound CT Scan etc.
¾ Operation Theaters of Gynecology, Eye, Dental, Orthopedic & General
Surgeries are also available.
¾ All Medical specialists / Surgeons are on board i.e. Eye, Dental,
General Physician, General Surgeon, Orthopedic Surgeons,
Radiologist etc.

SPORTS ACTIVITIES
All type of indoor / out door sports facilities are available in the
Academy viz;
¾ Cricket, Hockey and Football.
¾ Swimming pool.
¾ Table Tennis.
¾ Badminton.
¾ Chess.
Café facility is also available round the clock within the campus
premises.
In addition to above Pakistan Railway Stadium near Pakistan Railway
Headquarters Office, Lahore is meant for making its annual program of
sports events (Pakistan Inter-Divisional Champion Ship) and other
recreational activities of the Railways.
Pakistan Railways teams participated in almost all the National
Championships / High ranking tournaments held by different
Federations of Sports in the Country with the position in different
discipline of sports. Moreover Pakistan Railway Players / Officials also
represented Pakistan in International Events and brought laurels of
Railways.
The Pakistan Railways Sports Board is an independent Institution

which is making all out efforts to produce sportsmen / sportswomen of
National and International level to bring good name to Pakistan
Railways in particular and to the country in general.
Pakistan Railway Sports Board is making every endeavor to groom and

train talented players related to maximum disciplines.

9 About 2000 staff members of Pakistan Railways are
imparted training every year.
9 The annual Pakistan Inter-Regional Railway Training Course
(PIRRTC) are attended by participants from more than 40
countries including Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Egypt, Syria, Sri
Lanka, Senegal, Iran, Kenya Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar, 1771
participants from different countries have benefited from this
course.
