ABSTRACT

This paper addresses the advantages and disadvantages of students who are working

alongside their studies and its impact on their health, social life and also their Academic

performance.

Students who work while studying gain knowledge of the labour market and develop

skills and contacts which provide them with some advantage in the job they engage to,

at least in the early years after leaving school. Having a job while at school is one of

the ways in which a young person can achieve a smoother transition into later full time

employment.

Although they are some Advantages, being a working student is still not easy as cutting

a piece of cake. One of the important things to remember as a working student is

balancing work and studies, working students often forget or sacrifice their sleep and

even social life to accomplish this kind of task, this can affect a lot of things to a

student like their health and academic performance. To account for this, the method that

I used to collect data is through questionnaires. My results suggest that working while

studying has a negative impact on educational achievements and on participation in

education, as well as health and social life.

I. INTRODUCTION
A. Background
You probably heard about working student and wondered what it entails and how does one
become a working student. While there are no specific definitions of working student, he/she
typically works in exchange of money, experience or other things alongside their studies.

Basically, there are a lot of jobs a student or especially a college student can have. A
student can choose between an On-Campus or Off-campus job.

On-campus employment includes work done as a teaching or research assistant as well as

jobs in the university library, dormitory dining facilities, laboratories, and administrative offices.
This also includes employment with on-location commercial firms which provide services
for students on campus, such as stores or restaurants located in a University owned
building. While, Off-campus employment is work that takes place on any location outside
the boundaries of the campus at which a student is registered.

Though working off campus is always an option, on-campus jobs provide students
with two key advantages. First, transportation to and from work will never be an issue.
Second, on-campus employers are far more accommodating regarding a student’s need
to place school first in his or her life. Therefore, they are more likely to provi9de students
with much-needed flexibility when term papers or exams pile up. On the other hand, there
is no limit placed on earnings from an off-campus part-time job. Therefore, the student
can pick up even more hours should he or she want to do so.

Nonetheless, any kind of work experience at an early age is a good work experience.
You make money, you learn patience (especially if you work in customer service), and you
begin to create a resume for yourself that will open up even more job opportunities in the
future.

B. Statement of the problem

With the increasing expenses of education today. Having a privilege or stable

background will come in handy. To have a mom and dad pay for your school and
accommodation makes a huge difference. Unfortunately, not all students are that lucky,
and for the vast majority who isn’t, they have to take out loans, borrow money and work
to support themselves while finishing their studies.

Working while studying gives you a different perspective on the school and even
college experience. Ranging from friends to classes to jobs, all working students will
understand how difficult it can get. While other students meet up with their friends and
have an unlimited amount of time to do whatever they want to do outside of their class
and homework time, other working students are busy facing a time-management
dilemma.

One of the problem that a working student is facing is not having time for their love
ones, because they have to commit their schedule for work, finding time for friends and
family is hard because of their conflicting work and school schedule.

Second, sleep. Nights are long and mornings are dreaded for working students.
When working students get home they still have to work on homework, and if it doesn't
take hours to finish then maybe they’ll have time to go out with some friends later and
ofcourse they have to attend class the next day. The question then would be, would they
rather catch up on much needed sleep or have some fun, attend class and test
thereselves on how much longer they can last through our sleep-deprived days?

Third, stress. Unfortunately, having to balance a social life, work, school, and
family time is extremely stressful. It’s not hard to get overwhelmed, especially when you
have next-to-no time just to relax. There’s always something going on and you constantly
feel as though you’re being pulled in every direction just waiting to see how long you can
last before you’re stretched too thin. This one is one the major problems of working
students. Stress in handling a lot of things simultaneously can affect your health.

C. Objective

The purpose of this study is to document the experience of working students as an

employee and as a student. And to have a deeper understanding and intervention programs that
will meet their goals. This process will result in a characterization and understanding of meaning
of working students as lived and described by the respondents themselves.

D. Scope and Delimitation

This study was limited and conducted at Benigno Simeon Aquino National
Highschool. The most of the respondents are Senior Highschool pupils who have an
experience to be a working student. The researcher used 8 pupils and the method that
he/she applied in collecting informations is through questionnaires. This study is
estimated to know the pro’s and con’s of being a working student and how it affect the
academic performance of a student.

E. Related Literature

There are several studies that are available on the phenomenon about Working
Students. Mostly, it includes their different perspective and experience as a working
students.
Work-life balance is at its most uneven form at a university. Many students will
have the luxury of being able to concentrate on studying full-time, for a number of
reasons, be it from student loans, scholarships, or coming from a wealthy background
and having trust funds. But sadly, not all students came from a wealthy background, and
that goes to the students who do a lot of things just to support themselves while
studying. Being able to strike a balance between work and studying is a hard one to
achieve especially when exams and activities pile up. So, having a flexible job comes in a
lot handy. (Chris Smith 2016)

According to Matthew Williams (2014) Student work, which is the most common type of
work, is driven primarily by financial need: to meet an immediate or critical need; to cover a
shortfall in other forms of student support; to top up income to provide a better student
experience; or to help towards future goals. It also enables students to share the responsibility
for meeting the costs of their study, provides them with a sense of financial independence, and
develops skills in managing finances.

Working part time job can be defined as working fewer hours per week than a full
time job. Nowadays, student who are working part time job is also a phenomena and has been a
feature of the university experience. Working part time among the student does not occur in
Malaysia but also in other country such as United States, Australia, Indonesia and many more.
This literature review section will examines the number of student working part time, the
reason, the duration of this occurrence and also to look at their positive and negative impact.
(Cik Marria 2011)

According to Lauren E. Watanabe, employment among college students has been

increasing rapidly. Its effect on the academic performance of students has been questioned by
many researchers. Some of the issues raised in the literature concern matters such as the number
of hours worked, whether or not the students' jobs pertain to their majors, and the students'
workloads. As more students are employed, they face having to balance their academic
requirements, extracurricular activities, and employment responsibilities to maintain their
lifestyle.
F. Significance of the Study

This research can be a source of information about students who are working and
studying simultaneously. This study is beneficial to the students who will be engaging in
work while studying, for them to be aware of the situations and problem they will be
encountering. By knowing these factors students who prefer to work and study
simultaneously will be responsive and ready for the situation he/she is entering. Further
significance is the non-working students and faculty members will be able to understand
the situation of the working students and help them cope up with their studies.

II. METHODOLOGY

The previous researches on working students illustrate that this kind of students
faced a lot of challenges in their lives . The main aim of this research is to know the
benefits and disadvantages of being a working students and how it affect the academic
performance of a student. In the given research a qualitative approach was used. Data
was collected from 8 respondents. Four males and Three females working students.
This research carried out by method using questionnaires. The primary data collected
through the survey and schedule interviews is calculated and analyzed through different
perspective

After the setting up of objectives the research methodology is taken care of. The
questionnaire containing 20 questions were given to people that are currently working in
while studying in different courses of senior students in BSANHS.
A. Respondents Details

The majority of the group ranges to 16 to 18 years old. There are 8 respondents
from different types of work.

B. Research Designs

 Data is gathered through open-ended questionnaires.

C. Sampling Frame

 Sampling Unit- male and female working students

 Sampling Size- 8

III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This study was organized with the intent of informing the people about working students.
The response to the questionnaires confirms that they are different reasons why students choose
to work while studying.
Based on the accumulated answers, student chooses to be a working student because of
experience, to have an extra money and to be able to help their parents.
Moreover, they state that although being a working student is hard and tiresome, there
‘will’ to push through they’re education motivate them to endure all the hardships they have or
may encounter as a working students.
Working students have their distinctive skills like balancing they’re work and studies other
than that some have the capability to budget their money because of their limited income.
But one of the characteristics that I truly loved about them is they’re strong sense of
independence. And their ability to help their parents at a young age. My respondents are 16 to 18
years old but it feels like they’re more mature than their age.

IV. RECOMMENDATION
The researcher suggest that, students who are planning to engage work while
studying should be aware and mindful of the challenges and struggles that they might
encounter. They should practice to manage their time wisely and choose a job that is
near their school or home and has an employer who respect the fact that they are a
student.
Furthermore, the researcher suggest to the government or any agencies that can
help this kind of students who has no choice to work while they’re studying to develop a
program that can lessen their burden or hardship as a student.
