Figure Q1

Q1 Link BD in Figure Q1 consists of a single bar 30 mm wide and 12 mm thick. Knowing that each
pin has a 10-mm diameter, determine the maximum value of the average normal stress in link
BD if:
(i) ϴ = 0.
(ii) ϴ = 900

Q2 Two horizontal 5-kip forces are applied to pin B of the assembly shown in Figure Q2. Knowing
that a pin of 0.8 in. diameter is used at each connection, determine the maximum value of the
average normal stress:
(i) At link AB.
(ii) At link BC.

Q3 The wooden members A and B are to be joined by plywood splice plates which will be fully
glued on the surfaces of contact as shown in Figure Q3. As part of the design of the joint and
knowing that the clearance between the ends of the members is to be 8mm, determine the
smallest allowable length L if the average shearing stress in the glue is not to exceed 800 kPa.

Figure Q3

Q4 Under normal operating conditions, the electric motor shown in Figure Q4, exerts a torque of
2.4 kN.m on shaft AB. Knowing that each shaft is solid, determine the maximum shearing stress:

(i) In shaft AB.
(ii) In shaft BC.
(iii) In shaft CD.

Q5 The two solid shafts shown in Figure Q5 are connected by gears and are made of a steel for
which the allowable shearing stress is 50MPa. Knowing that the diameters of the two shafts are,
respectively, dBC = 40mm and dEF = 32mm and that the assembly is in equilibrium, determine
the largest torque TC that may be applied at C.

Q6 Determine the maximum magnitude P of the loads the beam shown in Figure Q6 can support if
the average shear stress in each pin is not to exceed 80 MPa. All pins are in double shear, and
each has a diameter of 18mm.

Q8 Determine the elongation of the square hollow bar shown in Figure Q8 when it is subjected to
the axial force P = 110 kN. If this axial force is increased to P = 360 kN and released, find the
permanent elongation of the bar. The bar is made of a metal alloy having a stress-strain
diagram which can be approximated as shown in the figure.
