CHAPTER
This chapter explains the features of the NetSpot Resource Downloader, the system
requirements, installation and uninstallation procedures, and other requirements that need to
be met before starting the NetSpot Resource Downloader.

This section explains the features, system requirements, and restrictions of the

Getting Started
System Requirements
The NetSpot Resource Downloader is confirmed to operate in the following system
environment:
■ Operating System
• Microsoft Windows 98
• Microsoft Windows Me
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
• Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0+Service Pack 6 or later
• Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional
■ Computer
Any computer which runs the above operating system software properly
■ Memory
Minimum recommended memory for each operating system
■ HDD
Minimum 20 MB hard disk space
Getting Started
■ File Management
Downloaded file information is saved on the computer running this utility. Because file
information cannot be correctly downloaded from two or more computers, it is necessary
to perform download operations from a single computer.
■ Resource Deletion
If you perform any operations that prevent you from reading files from this utility, including
deleting or changing the names and extensions of downloaded resource files, you will be
unable to download to other devices.
■ Data Checking
This utility does not check the content of data you download. If you perform an illegal
operation when downloading data, printing errors or device errors may occur.

Initial Installation
Follow the procedure below to install the NetSpot Resource Downloader.
IMPORTANT
If you are using Windows NT/2000/XP, it is necessary to log on as an Administrator prior
to the installation process.

This chapter explains how to set up and use the NetSpot Resource Downloader.

Preparing Devices for Use
When you use the NetSpot Resource Downloader with a device, you need to
configure the device on the TCP/IP network.

Before you use the NetSpot Resource Downloader with a device, make sure that the
device is ON.
Using the NetSpot Resource Downloader
■ Network Protocol
To use the NetSpot Resource Downloader for a device, the devices must have TCP/IP
connections with Ethernet and must be able to accept transfers using the LPR protocol. In
addition, transferring data from a computer requires the TCP/IP protocol, LPR protocol, or
an independent protocol. See the manual for each device for details on how to configure
the network settings.
■ Flash Memory
For machines which use flash memory, the flash memory may need to be formatted and/
or set in advance. See the [readme.txt] file in the [NetSpot Resource Downloader] folder,
where the installation program is located.
■ Fixed IP Addresses
It is necessary to specify a fixed IP address for each device. For more information on this
procedure, consult your network administrator.

• [ ] (Start Download)
Downloads or deletes a resource file. Downloading is available after you have completed
setup of a device or device group and made a resource file selection.

•[ ] (Add Resource)
Displays the [Add Resource] dialog box to select a resource file that you want to
download.
•[ ] (Delete)
Deletes a device group, a device, or a resource file from the main window.
Resource Pane
This pane displays the resource files and the resource information. In the resource
pane, you can select a resource file to delete or for which to display detailed
information. For details, see "Displaying Resources," on p. 2-14.
Message Area
This area displays the operation status and messages. The information in the
message area is reset when you quit the NetSpot Resource Downloader.

NOTE
• You can select from the following six resource categories:
- PCL Font/Macro
A Windows TrueType font for black-and-white printers and a PCL5e format macro.
- Type1 Font
A PostScript Type1 format font.
- Color PCL
A Windows TrueType font for color printers and a PCL5c format macro.
- RGB Source Profile
RGB Color Profile formatted for monitors.
- CMYK Simulation Profile
Simulates the print colors in other print environments.
- Output Profile
CMYK Color Profile formatted for printers.
- Named Color Profile
Simulates spot color.
• You can also create device groups by clicking [Edit] ➞ [Create New Device Group].
NOTE
To change the name of a device group, select the device group ➞ click [Edit] ➞
[Rename Device Group].

You can also display the [Register Devices] dialog box by clicking [Edit] ➞ [Register
Devices].
NOTE
Clicking [New Group] when a resource category is selected creates a new device
group under that resource category.
● If you want to search for devices within the subnet of the computer
in which the NetSpot Resource Downloader is installed:
❑ Select [Discover the Local Network].
NOTE
The NetSpot Resource Downloader searches for devices that have the SNMP
community name specified in the [Settings] dialog box. (See "Specifying
Management Information for Devices and Resource Files," on p. 2-17.)
NOTE
Devices already registered with a resource category are not displayed in [Available
Devices].
You can select multiple devices by clicking items while holding down [SHIFT] or
[CTRL] on the keyboard.
The icon for the device to register is displayed in [Registered Devices]. Previously
registered devices are displayed with different icons.
NOTE
• You can register a maximum of 64 devices in a device group.
• To delete a device that you do not want to add from [Registered Devices], select
the device ➞ click [Remove].

• If a resource category/device group is selected in the device pane, and the
resource file is only downloaded to some devices (Color Profile only), the status is
shown as 'D/L (Some Devices)'.
• For macros, a title is required. If a title is not specified in the [Macro Details] dialog
box, the status is 'Incomplete'.

To edit the file locations in [Downloader Setup File] and [Resource Information
File], click [Edit] ➞ select the file location you want ➞ click [OK].
To change the saving conditions, deselect them as necessary.
NOTE
• When you download resources, a downloader resource information file (.daf)
containing device printer driver information is saved in the location specified in
[Resource Information File]. This file is used by the printer driver.
• If a resource that does not meet a certain condition has already been set in the
device group, that condition cannot be deselected. The saving conditions can be
set as follows:
- If [Downloading of TrueType Fonts without PCL Information is Permitted] is
selected, you can download TrueType fonts without PCL information.
- If [Downloading of Macros Created with Programs other than Canon Printer
Drivers is Permitted] is selected, you can download macros created with
programs other than Canon printer driver.
- If [Use of 0 and 1 for IDs is Permitted] is selected, you can download macros
named with the numbers '0' and '1' (when using overlay printing).
● If you want to set devices that have the same community name as
the one specified:
❑ Select [Community to Specify].
❑ Enter the community name in [Community Name] ➞ click [OK].
● If you want to set both devices whose community names are public
and devices that have the same community name as the one
specified:
❑ Select [public and Community to Specify].
❑ Enter the community name in [Community Name] ➞ click [OK].

NOTE
• You can also display the [Add Resource] dialog box by clicking [Edit] ➞ [Add
Resource].
• Because Color Profile resource files cannot be differentiated from other resource
files by their extensions, refer to the Color Space information that has been saved
in the file to determine which Color Profile resource to select.
NOTE
• You can select multiple resource files by clicking items while holding down [SHIFT]
or [CTRL] on the keyboard.
• For PCL Fonts/Macros, the ID is automatically specified in the resource file and
displayed in the resource pane when you go back to the main window.
• For Type1 Fonts, the ID is not specified in the resource file.
• To delete a resource file, select the resource file that you want to delete from the
resource pane in the main window ➞ click [ ] (Delete), or click [Edit] ➞ [Delete].
• You can also add a resource file by dragging it from the desktop to the resource
pane.

2 In the resource pane, select the resource file for which you
want to display details ➞ click [Edit] ➞ [Resource Details].
NOTE
Depending on the resource file selected, the [Font Details], [Macro Details], or
[Profile Details] dialog box is displayed.

The settings for a resource file differ according to whether the file is a PCL font file
or a macro file.

IMPORTANT
In order to download a macro file to the device, you must enter its ID in [ID] and title
in [Title] in the [Macro Details] dialog box.
NOTE
You cannot change the description information for a resource file after it is
downloaded to a device.
NOTE
• You can also start downloading by clicking [File] ➞ [Start Download].
• If you select a device from the device pane in the main window ➞ click [Settings] ➞
[Set Forced Download], executing [ ] (Start Download) causes the previously
downloaded resource files of the device to be overwritten. This is useful when you
cannot add or delete a resource due to a device error, such as when the resource
information that is generated or stored in the computer through the NetSpot
Resource Downloader goes out of sync with the resource information in the device.
• If you want to restore this setting, select the device from the device pane in the
main window ➞ click [Settings] ➞ [Clear Forced Download].
• For PCL font, PCL macro, or Color Profile, you can download a maximum of 100
resources to a single device.
• For Type1 Font, you can download a maximum of 500 resources to a single device.
• If a font or macro already downloaded is not found in the list, the NetSpot Resource
Downloader automatically deletes the font or macro from the device.

List of Error Messages
This section explains the causes of problems when using the NetSpot Resource
Downloader, and how to resolve them.
Remedy Make sure that the printer is operating normally, and then try again.
<IP Address> The device is in use. Finish all printing jobs and then perform this operation.
Remedy Wait until all printing jobs have been completed, and then try again.
<IP Address> The amount of downloadable data exceeds the limit. The download process
will be cancelled.
<IP Address> The maximum number of resource files that can be downloaded is ...
Cause You are trying to download a profile for a device whose supported profile type
cannot be determined.
Troubleshooting
Remedy The compatible operating systems for the NetSpot Resource Downloader are
Windows 98/Me/NT 4.0/2000/XP. (See "System Requirements," on p. 1-2.)
Initialization failed.
Try to install NetSpot Resource Downloader again.
Remedy Reinstall the NetSpot Resource Downloader (for details, see "Reinstalling
(Repairing an Installation)," on p. 1-7).
Remedy Exit any applications that you do not need at the moment or increase the swap
space on your hard drive. If this does not solve the problem, increase the
memory of your PC.
Remedy After deleting the Downloader Setup File, either restart or reinstall the NetSpot
Resource Downloader (for details, see "Reinstalling (Repairing an Installation),"
on p. 1-7). If this does not resolve the problem, restart or reinstall Windows.
Remedy Confirm that you have specified a valid resource file, and that you have access
privileges for that resource file. If this does not resolve the problem, restart or
reinstall Windows. You may also need to check your hard disk.
Remedy Confirm that the power of the device is ON and the device is connected to the
3 network. Otherwise, restart the NetSpot Resource Downloader.
Troubleshooting
Could not add the resource because the number of registerable resources exceeds the limit.
An invalid type of resource file is specified. Make sure that the file is valid.
Remedy Make sure that the device is operating normally and that its IP address is
correct.

Unable to convert data to the new version.
Troubleshooting
Cause The Downloader Setup File created by the previous version of the NetSpot
Resource Downloader is corrupted.
Remedy Store a valid Downloader Setup File in the specified location and restart the
NetSpot Resource Downloader. Alternatively, delete the Downloader Setup File
and restart the NetSpot Resource Downloader.
Downloading of macros created with programs other than Canon printer drivers is not
permitted.
Cause 1 A macro created with programs other than a Canon printer driver is specified.
Remedy 2 Change the saving conditions. (See "Specifying Management Information for
Devices and Resource Files," on p. 2-17.)

Remedy 1 Specify an ID which falls within the permitted range (between 0 and 32767).

3 Cause Characters other than a positive integer are entered for the ID.
Troubleshooting
Cause A Downloader Setting File already exists in the folder you specified.
Remedy Check that you have specified the right folder, before replacing the existing file.
Cause The file path of the Downloader Setup File is too long.
Remedy Reduce the number of levels to shorten the path, or shorten the folder name.
