This section explains the features, system requirements, and restrictions of the
1 NetSpot Resource Downloader.
Getting Started

Features of This Utility


The NetSpot Resource Downloader is a utility used for downloading macros,
TrueType fonts, PS Type1 fonts, OpenType fonts, and Color Profiles to devices
through a network, and for managing these downloaded resource files on a
computer.
You can download the same resource file to several devices simultaneously by
creating a device group. You can also use a device group to add and delete devices
and resource files.

System Requirements
The NetSpot Resource Downloader is confirmed to operate in the following system
environment:

■ Operating System
• Microsoft Windows 98
• Microsoft Windows Me
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
• Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0+Service Pack 6 or later
• Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional

■ Computer
Any computer which runs the above operating system software properly

■ Memory
Minimum recommended memory for each operating system

■ HDD
Minimum 20 MB hard disk space

■ Compatible Network Protocol


• TCP/IP protocol

Usage Restrictions
Note the following restrictions when using the NetSpot Resource Downloader.

■ Flash Memory Error


If the device requires flash memory to store downloaded resources, the device will cause
an error when you try to download to a device which has no flash memory or when the
flash memory is already full. For machines which use flash memory, the flash memory 1
may need to be formatted and/or set in advance.

Getting Started
■ File Management
Downloaded file information is saved on the computer running this utility. Because file
information cannot be correctly downloaded from two or more computers, it is necessary
to perform download operations from a single computer.

■ Resource Deletion
If you perform any operations that prevent you from reading files from this utility, including
deleting or changing the names and extensions of downloaded resource files, you will be
unable to download to other devices.

■ Data Checking
This utility does not check the content of data you download. If you perform an illegal
operation when downloading data, printing errors or device errors may occur.

Follow the procedure below to install the NetSpot Resource Downloader.

To reinstall or repair an installation, follow the procedure in "Reinstalling (Repairing

Items displayed on the screen and procedures may slightly differ according to the
operating system you are using.

Initial Installation
Follow the procedure below to install the NetSpot Resource Downloader.

IMPORTANT
If you are using Windows NT/2000/XP, it is necessary to log on as an Administrator prior
to the installation process.

1 Double-click the [Setup.exe] icon in the [NetSpot Resource


Downloader] folder.
Installation starts.
The [NetSpot Resource Downloader Setup] window is displayed.

2 Click [Next].

Getting Started
The [Choose Destination Location] window is displayed.

3 Make sure that the correct destination folder is specified ➞


click [Next].

If necessary, you can click [Browse] to specify the destination folder.

The [Setup Status] window is displayed and files are copied to the destination
folder.

When the file installation is complete, the [InstallShield Wizard Complete] window
is displayed.

4 Click [Finish].

The installation program closes.

Reinstalling (Repairing an Installation)
You can reinstall the NetSpot Resource Downloader software currently installed in
your computer if it does not operate correctly.
Follow the procedure below to reinstall the NetSpot Resource Downloader on a
computer that has already had the NetSpot Resource Downloader installed.

2 Select [Repair] ➞ click [Next].

➞ double-click [Add/Remove Programs].

2 Select [NetSpot Resource Downloader] from the list ➞ click


[Change/Remove].

3 Select [Remove] ➞ click [Next].

The [Confirm File Deletion] dialog box is displayed.

The uninstallation process starts, and the [Maintenance Complete] window is


displayed when the process is complete. 1

Preparing Devices for Use
When you use the NetSpot Resource Downloader with a device, you need to
configure the device on the TCP/IP network.

Before you use the NetSpot Resource Downloader with a device, make sure that the
device is ON.
Using the NetSpot Resource Downloader

■ Network Protocol
To use the NetSpot Resource Downloader for a device, the devices must have TCP/IP
connections with Ethernet and must be able to accept transfers using the LPR protocol. In
addition, transferring data from a computer requires the TCP/IP protocol, LPR protocol, or
an independent protocol. See the manual for each device for details on how to configure
the network settings.

■ Flash Memory
For machines which use flash memory, the flash memory may need to be formatted and/
or set in advance. See the [readme.txt] file in the [NetSpot Resource Downloader] folder,
where the installation program is located.

■ Fixed IP Addresses
It is necessary to specify a fixed IP address for each device. For more information on this
procedure, consult your network administrator.

The main window menus contain the following commands for operating the NetSpot
Resource Downloader:

Downloads or deletes a resource file. Downloading is

Device Pane
This pane displays the resource categories, the created device groups, and the
registered devices. The resource categories displayed here differ according to the
resource classification, as follows:
• When the resource classification is [Font/Macro], the following resource
categories are displayed:
- PCL Font/Macro
- Type1 Font
- Color PCL
• When the resource classification is [Color], the following resource categories are
displayed:
- RGB Source Profile
- CMYK Simulation Profile
- Output Profile
- Named Color Profile

Toolbar
The toolbar contains the following buttons for operating the NetSpot Resource
Downloader:

• [ ] (Start Download)
Downloads or deletes a resource file. Downloading is available after you have completed
setup of a device or device group and made a resource file selection.

Using the NetSpot Resource Downloader

Displays the [Register Devices] dialog box to register a device.

•[ ] (Create New Device Group)


Creates a device group for registering devices.

•[ ] (Update Color Information)


Acquires Color Profile information from downloaded resource files in the device, and
displays it in the main window.

•[ ] (Add Resource)
Displays the [Add Resource] dialog box to select a resource file that you want to
download.

•[ ] (Delete)
Deletes a device group, a device, or a resource file from the main window.

Resource Pane
This pane displays the resource files and the resource information. In the resource
pane, you can select a resource file to delete or for which to display detailed
information. For details, see "Displaying Resources," on p. 2-14.

Message Area
This area displays the operation status and messages. The information in the
message area is reset when you quit the NetSpot Resource Downloader.

To manage resources, you need to first register at least one device.

1 Select [Font/Macro] or [Color] from the resource classification

list.

2 Select the resource category from the device pane in the main
window ➞ click [ ] (Create New Device Group).

If you do not want to create a device group, skip to step 4.


A new device group is created under the resource category.

NOTE
• You can select from the following six resource categories:
- PCL Font/Macro
A Windows TrueType font for black-and-white printers and a PCL5e format macro.
- Type1 Font
A PostScript Type1 format font.
- Color PCL
A Windows TrueType font for color printers and a PCL5c format macro.
- RGB Source Profile
RGB Color Profile formatted for monitors.
- CMYK Simulation Profile
Simulates the print colors in other print environments.
- Output Profile
CMYK Color Profile formatted for printers.
- Named Color Profile
Simulates spot color.
• You can also create device groups by clicking [Edit] ➞ [Create New Device Group].

3 Enter a name for the device group.

NOTE
To change the name of a device group, select the device group ➞ click [Edit] ➞
[Rename Device Group].

The [Register Devices] dialog box is displayed.

NOTE
You can also display the [Register Devices] dialog box by clicking [Edit] ➞ [Register
Devices].

5 Select a location to register the device from [Registered
Devices].

Using the NetSpot Resource Downloader


If the registration location is a resource category, the device is not registered as a
member of any device group. If the registration location is a device group, the
device is registered as a member of that device group.

NOTE
Clicking [New Group] when a resource category is selected creates a new device
group under that resource category.

6 Select the method for searching devices.

● If you want to search for devices within the subnet of the computer
in which the NetSpot Resource Downloader is installed:
❑ Select [Discover the Local Network].

● If you want to search for a specific device:


❑ Select [Specify IP Address] ➞ enter the IP address in [IP Address].

NOTE
The NetSpot Resource Downloader searches for devices that have the SNMP
community name specified in the [Settings] dialog box. (See "Specifying
Management Information for Devices and Resource Files," on p. 2-17.)

To delete previously registered device groups or devices, use the main window.
Select the device group or the device you want to delete from the device pane in

multiple devices belonging to the same device group by clicking items while holding
down [SHIFT] or [CTRL] on the keyboard.
Confirm the deletion in the dialog box that is displayed.

You can display detailed information for resources.

The following resource information is displayed in the resource pane of the main
window:
• If a resource category is selected in the device pane:
Resource files of all the devices registered in that resource category are
displayed.
• If at least one device group is selected in the device pane:
All of the resource files configured for those device groups are displayed.
Resource files used in multiple device groups are displayed for each device
group.
• If at least one device is selected in the device pane:
All of the resource files configured for those devices are displayed. Resource
files in multiple devices are displayed for each device. However, resource files in

devices that belong to a device group appear grayed-out, and you cannot delete

those resource files or specify details for those resource files.
The information displayed for resources differs according to resource
classification, as follows:
• If [Resource Classification] is [Font/Macro]:
Type: Displays whether the resource has fonts or macros.
Status: Displays whether the resource file has been downloaded.
File Name: Displays the local file name of the resource after
downloading.
ID: Displays the resource file ID.
Font Name: If [Type] is 'Font', displays the font name.
Title: If [Type] is 'Macro', displays the macro title.
Subtitle: If [Type] is 'Macro', displays the subtitle.
Device Information: Displays the name of the device group, or the device IP
address and product name.

• If [Resource Classification] is [Color]:


Type: Displays whether the resource is 'Source Profile',
'Simulation Profile', 'Output Profile', or 'Named Color
Profile'.
Status: Displays the download status of the resource file.
Color Space: Displays whether the profile is RGB or CMYK.
Profile Name: Displays the name configured for the profile.
File Name: Displays the file name of the profile (usually the same as
the name used during downloading).
Device Information: Displays the name of the device group, or the device IP
address and product name.

The details shown under [Device Information] differ according to the selection in
the device pane as follows:
• If a resource category is selected in the device pane:
If a resource file is configured for a device group, the name of that device group
is displayed.
If a resource file is configured for a device that does not belong to a device
group, the IP address and product name of that device are displayed.
• If a device group is selected in the device pane:
The name of the device group is displayed.
• If a device is selected in the device pane:
The IP address and product name of that device are displayed.

The status is shown in the resource pane as follows:
Downloaded: Resource file is downloaded.
Pending (Delete): Resource file is selected for deletion.

NOTE
• If a resource category/device group is selected in the device pane, and the
resource file is only downloaded to some devices (Color Profile only), the status is
shown as 'D/L (Some Devices)'.
• For macros, a title is required. If a title is not specified in the [Macro Details] dialog
box, the status is 'Incomplete'.

To edit the file locations in [Downloader Setup File] and [Resource Information
File], click [Edit] ➞ select the file location you want ➞ click [OK].
To change the saving conditions, deselect them as necessary.

NOTE
• When you download resources, a downloader resource information file (.daf)
containing device printer driver information is saved in the location specified in
[Resource Information File]. This file is used by the printer driver.
• If a resource that does not meet a certain condition has already been set in the
device group, that condition cannot be deselected. The saving conditions can be
set as follows:
- If [Downloading of TrueType Fonts without PCL Information is Permitted] is
selected, you can download TrueType fonts without PCL information.
- If [Downloading of Macros Created with Programs other than Canon Printer
Drivers is Permitted] is selected, you can download macros created with
programs other than Canon printer driver.
- If [Use of 0 and 1 for IDs is Permitted] is selected, you can download macros
named with the numbers '0' and '1' (when using overlay printing).

3 Specify the SNMP community name to set the range of


devices to look up.
Only when the community name specified here matches the community name
set for the device does [Available Devices] (in the [Register Devices] dialog box)
display devices that are in the same network. (See "Creating a Device Group and
Adding a Device," on p. 2-7.)

The SNMP community names of the following devices are public:
- Devices not allowed to change SNMP community names.
- Devices whose SNMP community names have not been changed from their initial

Adding Resource Files
This section explains how to select the resource file that you want to download from
the list of registered resource files.

1 On the device pane in the main window, select a device group


or a device that does not belong to a device group ➞ click
2 [ ] (Add Resource).

NOTE
• You can also display the [Add Resource] dialog box by clicking [Edit] ➞ [Add
Resource].
• Because Color Profile resource files cannot be differentiated from other resource
files by their extensions, refer to the Color Space information that has been saved
in the file to determine which Color Profile resource to select.

NOTE
• You can select multiple resource files by clicking items while holding down [SHIFT]

• For PCL Fonts/Macros, the ID is automatically specified in the resource file and
displayed in the resource pane when you go back to the main window.
• For Type1 Fonts, the ID is not specified in the resource file.
• To delete a resource file, select the resource file that you want to delete from the
resource pane in the main window ➞ click [ ] (Delete), or click [Edit] ➞ [Delete].
• You can also add a resource file by dragging it from the desktop to the resource
pane.

Follow the procedure below to confirm and specify details for a resource file.

want to display details ➞ click [Edit] ➞ [Resource Details].

Depending on the resource file selected, the [Font Details], [Macro Details], or
[Profile Details] dialog box is displayed.

3 Confirm and specify details for the resource file.

NOTE
The settings for a resource file differ according to whether the file is a PCL font file
or a macro file.

● When a PCL font type resource file is selected in step 2:
❑ Enter the ID ➞ click [OK].

● When a PS Type1 font type resource file is selected in step 2:
❑ Confirm the name of the file and the name of the PostScript font used ➞ click
[OK].

● When a macro type resource file is selected in step 2:


❑ Enter the ID in [ID], title in [Title], and subtitle (optional) in [Subtitle] ➞ click
[OK].

The settings are saved, and the display returns to the main window.

● When a Color Profile type resource file is selected in step 2:
❑ Confirm information in [File Name], [Profile Name] (information regarding the
application software), [Color Space] (RGB, CMYK), and [File Type] (RGB
Source Profile, CMYK Simulation Profile, Output Profile, Named Color Profile)
➞ click [OK].

IMPORTANT
In order to download a macro file to the device, you must enter its ID in [ID] and title
in [Title] in the [Macro Details] dialog box.

NOTE
You cannot change the description information for a resource file after it is
downloaded to a device.

Downloading Resource Files
After you have completed setup of the device and selection of its resource files, you
can start downloading.

1 Click [ ] (Start Download).

Using the NetSpot Resource Downloader


The download starts.

NOTE
• You can also start downloading by clicking [File] ➞ [Start Download].
• If you select a device from the device pane in the main window ➞ click [Settings] ➞
[Set Forced Download], executing [ ] (Start Download) causes the previously
downloaded resource files of the device to be overwritten. This is useful when you
cannot add or delete a resource due to a device error, such as when the resource
information that is generated or stored in the computer through the NetSpot
Resource Downloader goes out of sync with the resource information in the device.
• If you want to restore this setting, select the device from the device pane in the
main window ➞ click [Settings] ➞ [Clear Forced Download].
• For PCL font, PCL macro, or Color Profile, you can download a maximum of 100
resources to a single device.
• For Type1 Font, you can download a maximum of 500 resources to a single device.
• If a font or macro already downloaded is not found in the list, the NetSpot Resource
Downloader automatically deletes the font or macro from the device.

This section explains the causes of problems when using the NetSpot Resource
Downloader, and how to resolve them.

Error Messages Displayed in the Message Area


3 <IP Address> Processing has been interrupted due to a communications error.
Troubleshooting

Cause A communications error has occurred.

Remedy Make sure that the printer is operating normally, and then try again.

<IP Address> The device is in use. Finish all printing jobs and then perform this operation.

Cause All printing jobs are not complete.

Remedy Wait until all printing jobs have been completed, and then try again.

<IP Address> The amount of downloadable data exceeds the limit. The download process
will be cancelled.

Cause The amount of resource data exceeds the limit.

Remedy Delete unnecessary resources from the device.

<IP Address> The maximum number of resource files that can be downloaded is ...

Cause The number of resource files specified exceeds the limit.

Remedy Delete unnecessary resources from the list.

<IP Address> Insufficient free space.

Cause The free space of the device is insufficient.

Remedy Delete unnecessary resources from the device.

<IP Address> Make sure if the profile can be used with this device.

Cause You are trying to download a profile for a device whose supported profile type
cannot be determined.

Remedy Confirm that the profile to be downloaded is supported by the device.

Error Messages Displayed in a Dialog Box


This software does not support this version of the operating system.

Cause You are trying to install on a non-compatible version of Windows. 3

Troubleshooting
Remedy The compatible operating systems for the NetSpot Resource Downloader are
Windows 98/Me/NT 4.0/2000/XP. (See "System Requirements," on p. 1-2.)

Initialization failed.
Try to install NetSpot Resource Downloader again.

Cause The necessary files cannot be accessed.

Remedy Reinstall the NetSpot Resource Downloader (for details, see "Reinstalling
(Repairing an Installation)," on p. 1-7).

NetSpot Resource Downloader is already activated.

Cause The NetSpot Resource Downloader is already started.

Remedy Use the NetSpot Resource Downloader that is already started.

Not enough memory.

Cause The amount of memory is insufficient.

Remedy Exit any applications that you do not need at the moment or increase the swap
space on your hard drive. If this does not solve the problem, increase the
memory of your PC.

A system error has occurred.

Cause A system error has occurred.

Remedy After deleting the Downloader Setup File, either restart or reinstall the NetSpot
Resource Downloader (for details, see "Reinstalling (Repairing an Installation),"
on p. 1-7). If this does not resolve the problem, restart or reinstall Windows.

Failed to access the file.

Cause The necessary files cannot be accessed.

Remedy Confirm that you have specified a valid resource file, and that you have access
privileges for that resource file. If this does not resolve the problem, restart or
reinstall Windows. You may also need to check your hard disk.

Could not search due to an error.

Cause Device searching failed.

Remedy Confirm that the power of the device is ON and the device is connected to the
3 network. Otherwise, restart the NetSpot Resource Downloader.
Troubleshooting

Too many devices are specified in the device group.

Cause The number of devices specified exceeds the limit.

Remedy Delete any devices that are unnecessary or already downloaded.

Could not add the resource because the number of registerable resources exceeds the limit.

Cause The number of resources specified exceeds the limit.

Remedy Delete unnecessary resources.

An invalid type of resource file is specified. Make sure that the file is valid.

Cause The resource file cannot be added or downloaded.

Remedy Specify a valid resource file.

An invalid type of resource file has been specified.


The downloaded resource file may not run properly.

Cause The added resource file includes invalid data.

Remedy Specify a valid resource file.

Download data is invalid.

Cause The resource file to be downloaded is invalid.

Remedy Specify a valid resource file.

The following characters cannot be used for the [Title] or [Subtitle].
" % ' * , / : ; < > ? \ ^ ` { } | ~ non-ASCII characters

Cause The characters you have entered are invalid.

Remedy Modify the title.

The device you selected does not respond.

Cause A communications error has occurred.

Remedy Make sure that the device is operating normally and that its IP address is
correct.

Unable to convert data to the new version.

Troubleshooting
Cause The Downloader Setup File created by the previous version of the NetSpot
Resource Downloader is corrupted.

Remedy Store a valid Downloader Setup File in the specified location and restart the
NetSpot Resource Downloader. Alternatively, delete the Downloader Setup File
and restart the NetSpot Resource Downloader.

Downloading of macros created with programs other than Canon printer drivers is not
permitted.

Cause 1 A macro created with programs other than a Canon printer driver is specified.

Remedy 1 Specify a macro created with a Canon printer driver.

Cause 2 The saving conditions are incorrect.

Remedy 2 Change the saving conditions. (See "Specifying Management Information for
Devices and Resource Files," on p. 2-17.)

Downloading of TrueType fonts without PCL information is not permitted.

Cause 1 TrueType Font data without PCL information is specified.

Remedy 1 Specify TrueType data which has PCL information.

Cause 2 The saving conditions are incorrect.

Remedy 2 Change the saving conditions. (See "Specifying Management Information for
Devices and Resource Files," on p. 2-17.)

Enter correct ID.

Cause 1 An incorrect ID is entered.

Remedy 1 Specify an ID which falls within the permitted range (between 0 and 32767).

Cause 2 The saving conditions are incorrect.

Remedy 2 Change the saving conditions. (See "Specifying Management Information for
Devices and Resource Files," on p. 2-17.)

Input a positive integer for the ID.

3 Cause Characters other than a positive integer are entered for the ID.
Troubleshooting

Remedy Enter a positive integer for the ID.

A Downloader Setup File already exists in the specified folder.


Do you want to use the existing setting file?
If you click [No], the existing setting file will be replaced.

Cause A Downloader Setting File already exists in the folder you specified.

Remedy Check that you have specified the right folder, before replacing the existing file.

Cannot import the file.


Try to specify the file path again after clicking [OK].
Click the [Cancel] button without specifying a file path to exit the application.

Cause The file path of the Downloader Setup File is incorrect.

Remedy Specify a folder that has a Downloader Setup File.

The file path is too long.


Reset a path.

Cause The file path of the Downloader Setup File is too long.

Remedy Reduce the number of levels to shorten the path, or shorten the folder name.
