In my essay, I plan to talk about the negative effects that violent video

games have on children both mentally and physically.

Toppo, Greg. “How Violent Video Games Really Affect Kids” Scientific

American Mind, (2015)

The Article “How Violent Video Games Really Affect Kids” was written by Greg

Toppo. This article talks about Adam Lenzro, the young 20 year old boy who

killed 26 people in the Sandyhook Shooting. It goes over an investigator named

Michael Mudry, who goes into an investigation about Adam. Turns out he made a

lot of stops at a movie theater but not to see movies. He only came there to play

arcade shooting games for eight to ten hours a night. More things were also found

on Adams hard-drive, from pictures of weapons and other violent articles. I will be

using this source in my paper to write about a real life example of proof on how a

young person played video games over and over again which turned out they

helped him become a killer.

Dunckley , Victoria. “This Is Your Child's Brain on Video Games.” Psychology

Today, Sussex Publishers, 25 Sept. 2016, www.scientificamerican.com/article/do-

video-games-inspire-violent-behavior/.

“This Is Your Child’s Brain on Video Games.” by Psychology Today written by

Victoria Dunckley on September 25, 2016. This is an interesting article because it

goes behind the scenes glimpse on how violent video games affect a child’s

nervous system. The article talks about a young boy named Aiden, who is playing

on his Nintendo DS, he is monitored by his mood changes, heart rate, focus on

anything else around him, and how glued he is to the screen. It talks about how

once he got into playing these games, he was shouting in public because he was

losing shooting battles, causing high heart rate and mood swings. This will be a

great article to use because I can apply it to my paper by explaining what can

happen to young children even in public if their parents allow them to focus on

video games for too long and not focus on the events around them.

Anderson, Craig Alan, et al. Violent Video Game Effects on Children and

Adolescents: Theory, Policy. Oxford University Press, 2007.

Violent Video Game Effects on Children and Adolescents: Theory Policy from

Oxford University Press written by Alan Craig Anderson. This article is relevant to

my research because this article explains not only how violent video games affect

children but also how they are as adults after playing violent video games for so

long. I can use this article to explain the negative effects on children and adults

when it comes to violent games. People think that video games only cause you to

become violent but other things this article goes over is laziness, weight gain,

social issues and many more examples that I will apply and explain in my paper.

Pollard, Deana. “Violent Video Game Effects On Children” Youtube 28 Feb. 2015,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9JVIbK7bG4

“Violent Video Game Effects On Children” is produced by Deana Pollard, This is

a video where Deana Pollard interviews Craig Anderson who is a professor in

psychology at the University of Iowa and then also Brad Bushman who is a

Professor of Communication and Psychology at the Ohio State University. In this

video it goes over how parents can also play a big role in how these video games

affect them, for example how long do they allow their children to play? Are their

rules when it comes to playing? These are a few questions asked in the video. The

video goes over a lot of different topics on the negative effects video games have

on kids and what people can do to change it and help young children.

This will make a great source for me to support my argument because it goes over

many important topics and ideas in just one video about the negative effects on

violent video games and how it starts and why.

average American gamer is a 35-year-old adult, with 72 percent of gamers

aged 18 or older. The author also goes over how playing video games not

only changes how our brains perform but also their structure. It explains how

Video games can affect you in many ways not just one part of the brain, it

even discusses a few positive things that it can help boost memory. This

article will help me discuss more of the statistics of my argument and also

how video games affect the brain in many different aspects.

Psychology at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt University,

2my.vanderbilt.edu/developmentalpsychologyblog/2014/04/effect-of-video-games-

on-child-development/.1`4 Apr. 2014

This Article is called “Effects of Video Games on Child Development.” Written by

Danielle Dai from the Developmental Psychology at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt

University. This article discusses the good and the bad of video games, and the

reasons behind it. Some households may be different than others and some may not

be a good fit for any video games at all based on added violence, it talks about

parenting skills and how they can introduce their kids to other fun activities besides

video games. Parents play a big role in their child's development mentally and

physically. This will make a good topic in my argument, based on parenting skills

and household environments.

Written by Carley Goldberg “Children and Violent Games: A Warning” by New

York Times on December 15 1998. This is a great newspaper source especially the

fact it comes from New York Times, however it is an older read from 1998 so it

will not have as updated information, however it discusses a lot of interesting

supporting facts on my topic that would make a great source for my arguemnt. The

newspaper article goes over the negative effects Violent video games have on

children of all ages and it is warning parents they need to make changes in order to

help their children not become violent as they develop.
