Visual Admin is a online configuration of J2EE.

You can use the Config tool for offline administration of the Java cluster, and is particularly intended
for those occasions on which you cannot work with the Visual Administrator:
Adding and deleting server processes
Unlocking access to the Visual Administrator if no administrator can log on and unlock the user (for
example, the administrator is locked)
You can also make global and local configuration settings with the Config tool, as in the Visual
Administrator.

J2EE Administration Tools (Config Tool, Visual

Admin, NWA)

There are three different tools that are used to do certain Java engine administration tasks. This attempts to describe each.

Some common tasks.

To Reset Administrator Password through Config Tool —

It may sometimes happen that a user enters the wrong password a number of times (by default, 3) and if that user is the
administrator, then the administrator user is locked. This prevents all sorts of things happening. To unlock the administator,
use the following process

The tools.
Configuration tool (aka config tool)
 Generally used to make changes to VM (virtual memory) settings, and and remove server nodes and change UME (user
management engine)
 Requires the Java database be started
 Is not password protected (uses a secure storefor authentication)
 Also leads to the configuration editor

Which by default is read only, but can be changed into read/write to make changes. The Java engine should be stopped (but
of course, not the underlying database) before any changes are made.

Visual administrator
 Generally used to run administration tasks, such as look at log files, changing key store etc
 Requires the Java engine to be running
 Password protected
 Replaced by NWA for NW AS Java >= 7.1
 Can connect to multiple Java engines (one at a time!)

After connecting (and waiting for some time...)

The Visual Administrator can be deployed to a Windows desktop by taking the whole admin folder and copying it to the
desktop and installing a JRE.

On Windows, the admin folder is at disk:\usr\sap\<SID>\JCnn\admin

NetWeaver Administrator (NWA)

 Browser based tool to manage Java engine, including starting and stopping
 Java engine must be running
 Password protected
 Runs as a servlet on the Java engine (http://portal:port/nwa)

Difference Between visual Admin tool and config tool

This article answers the below queries :

 What are the prerequisites and uses of config tool ?

 What are the prerequisites and uses of Visual Administrator ?
 What are the limitations of Config tool ?
 What is the difference between Config Tool and Visual Administrator tools in SAP?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Config Tool and Visual Administrator(VA) are the administration and configuration tools
in SAP Netweaver AS Java.

What are the prerequisites and uses of config tool ?

The prerequisite for the config tool is database must be running, as this tool is used to
maintain the SAP Netweaver AS Java settings in the database. It is not necessary that
Java should be running to use config tool.

Uses of config tool :

 The Java Virtual Memory(JVM) settings can only be maintained with the config tool.
 Configuration of services and managers can be done with config tool
Limitations of Config tool :

 Remote configuration cannot be done by Config tool

 Start or stop of java cannot be done through config tool
 Change of parameters at run time is not possible

What are the prerequisites and uses of Visual Administrator ?

With visual administrator, we can logon to the P4 port of the AS Java. Hence both
database and java should be running. This is the prerequisite for VA.

Uses of Visual Administrator :

 Configuration of services and managers can be done

 Remote configuration can be done ( It means VA can be installed and used for
configuration in any host on which SAP Netweaver AS JAVA is not installed
 Starting and stopping services can be done
 Stopping an SAP NW As java instance can be done

What is the difference between Config Tool and Visual Administrator tools in
SAP?

 Java Virtual Machine parameter settings can only be done through Config tool. VA
cannot be used for this
 To use VA, SAP Netweaver AS Java should be running but for config tool it is not
required
 Changes to selected parameters can be done at run time through VA, which is not
possible with Config tool.
 AS Java can be started/stopped by VA which is not possible by Config tool
 Remote configuration can be done by VA but not by config tool

so guys if i am wrong please correct me. and plz give me some more points differentiate between
configtool and visual admin

The biggest and most important difference is the Configtool is an Offline tool and Visual Admin is an
Online tool...

As juan said (Config tool is offline configurationi and Visual admin is online configuration) that's a
major difference and there is lots of diffrences in functionalities as well.
config tools is template of Java engine means config tool stores the settings of java engine.
for eg: you can change the parmeters of java engine and u can change the properties and u can
monitor the server nodes etc....
visual admin is template of components which are running on Java engine.
eg: you can monitor the services and applications of the components which are running on java
engine.
and lots of funictionlities are there for the both administration tools of Java.
if you want to know the functionalities clearly then go through the online documentation in

Visual Administrator

The J2EE Engine Visual Administrator is a graphical user interface (GUI) that
enables administration of the whole cluster, all cluster elements, and all
modules running on them. It provides remote monitoring and management
of managers, services, libraries, and interfaces working on each element in a
single GUI.

To start the Visual Admin:

• Log in is user sidadm

• Change the directory to F:usrsapSIDDVEBMGSxxj2eeadmin
• Execute the command go.bat

SAP J2EE Engine 6.20 provides three basic tools for administration u2013
Visual Administrator,
Console Administrator, and
Config Tool (both Visual and Console).
There are some other tools namely DBTool, Library Tool, RMIC Tool, Shutdown Tool, and User Tool
also used.
Difference between config toll and visual admin:-Visual Administrator is a graphical user interface
(GUI) that enables administration of the whole cluster, of the cluster nodes, and all modules running
on them.On the other hand with the help of Config Tool you are able to add and configure SAP J2EE
Engine 6.20 cluster elements.Again Config Tool can be used without a running SAP J2EE Engine
6.20. The only requirement is to have the server installed on the local machine.
Visual Administrator is written in the Java programming language and can be run in any environment
where a Java Virtual Machine is available. On the other hand Config Tool is XML-based, which
enables third-party visualizations to be developed or integrated as part of a more complicated
configuration system.
Visual Administrator enables remote monitoring and management of the cluster, and for each cluster
element, and enables the system administrator to monitor all managers and services working on
each node in a single GUI & its online.cofig tool on the otherhand offline.
"Visual Administrator":-with the help of this tool you can able to login & logout from the server. It gives
you all the details regarding different services running in your SAP server. As already mentioned that
with the help of VA we enables administration of the whole cluster, of the cluster nodes, and all
modules running on them.
"Config Tool":-Config Tool enables you to run the server in remote debug mode.
Again Config Tool enables you to add dispatcher and server nodes to the SAP J2EE Engine 6.20
Cluster. With the help of config tool we are enable to modification of service or manager module
properties.
