Retort stand
Bunsen burner

[2marks]

b) Each pupil were given the same book of the same size and same weight. They
were asked to make several measurement.

Diagram 1

i) Suggest a suitable measuring tool(s) to measure the thickness of a

sheet of paper.
Micrometer screw gauge
[1mark]

ii) Explain the method to measure the weight of a single sheet of paper.
Measure the weight of the whole sheets of paper.
Then the reading divided by the number of sheets .
[2marks]

2. Tick (/) for the true statement(s) and cross (x) for the false statement(s).

a) Before setting up the experiment, one must have the hypothesis. /

b) There are two types of variables to be considered. X

c) To get a more accurate data, one must repeat the procedure. /

d) Plotting a graph is one way of interpreting data. /

e) A hypothesis can be made after the data has been analysed. X

f) One must change to passive sentence when writing a report. /

Diagram 2
(a) What is the length of the pencil shown in Diagram 2?
1.9cm
[1mark]

(b) Mark ‘X’ in the box provided on Diagram 2 to show the correct position of the
eye in taking the reading.
[1mark]

(c) A student carried out an activity to measure the length of the curve shown in
Diagram 3. The results are shown in Table 1.

Diagram 3

Length of curved line (cm) 8.6 8.8 8.7

Table 1
(i) How would you measure the length of the curved line?
By using a thread
Placed the thread on the ruler.
[1mark]
(ii) Why did the student take three readings?
To take the average reading
[1mark]
(iii) Based on Table 1, what is the length of the curved line?
(8.6+8.8+8.7) ÷ 3= 8.7cm
[2marks]
2. A pupil conduct an experiment by adding marbles into a polystyrene container
which has been placed on the water. Table 2 shows the result from the observation of
the expe

marbles

10
Table 2
a) From Table 2, state the relationship between mass and density.
The bigger the mass, the higher the density.
[1mark]
b) Suggest a method to the pupil to make the polystyrene container with 10 marbles to
float higher.
Put the marbles into a bigger container
Replaced the water with higher density solution
[2marks]
c) If the same polystyrene container with 10 marbles was to be placed in a concentrated
salt solution.
i) Predict the outcome.
It will float
[1mark]
ii ) Explain your answer in 4(c)(i).
The density of the salt solution is lesser than the water
[2marks]
3.
5. Diagram 4 shows measuring apparatus P and Q.

P: …spring balance. Q: level balance.

Diagram 4

(a) On Diagram 4, label P and Q.

[1mark]

(b) (i) Which measuring tool will give different results when measuring activities
are conducted in two different places, at the Equator and at the North Pole?
Q
[1mark]
(ii) Give a reason for your answer in 5(b)(i).
Q will be affected by gravitational force.
Force at equator bigger than the north pole.

[2marks]
(c) (i) If an astronaut has a mass of 70 kg on Earth. What will be his mass in space?
70kg

[1mark]

(ii) Explain your answer in 5(c)(i).

Mass is a scalar quantities. It only has magnitude and has no direction.
[2marks]

6. A pupil carried out an experiment to determine the time taken for one complete swing
of a pendulum as shown in Diagram 5. The time taken for 10 complete swings is
recorded and the experiment is repeated using strings of different lengths

Diagram 5

(a) Table 3 shows the time taken for 10 complete swings for various length of strings.
Complete Table 3 by calculating the time taken for one complete swing.
Table 3
Length of pendulum (cm) 10 20 30 40 50
Time taken for 10 complete swings (s) 10 15 18 20 22
Time taken for 1 complete swing (s) 1.0 1.5 1.8 2.0 2.2

(b) Based on the data in Table 3, plot a graph of time taken for one complete swing
against the length of pendulum.

(c) Predict the time taken for one complete swing when the length of the string
is 25cm.

[1mark]
(d) Diagram 6 shows a scene at the playground. The three children on the swings are
trying to solve a problem of who can swing the fastest. Child D suggests that the length
affects the time taken while child F thinks that it has to do with their mass.
(Note: child D and E have the same mass)

D E F
Diagram 6

(i) Do you agree with child F? Why?

No because time taken for a complete swing does not affect by mass, only thelength of
the string.

[2marks]

(ii) Who do you think will swing the fastest? Why?

F because he has the shortest swing.
[2marks]

(iii) Rearrange the children from the slowest to the fastest in their swing.

Diagram 7

(a) Name the method used in Diagram 7?

Water displacement methods
[1mark]
(b) (i) Can the volume of the cork be obtained directly without using the
aluminium lump?
No [1mark]

(ii) Explain your answer in 7(b)(i).

Cork has lesser density and it will float thus water will not be displace
[1mark]

(c) If the aluminium lump has a mass of 81 g, calculate its density.

Density = 81g ÷ 6 ml
= 13.5 g/ml
[2marks]

(d) Is the method in 7(a) can be used to determine the volume of three cubes of
sugar? Explain your answer.
No because it will dissolve in the water.
[2marks]

Any Three layered drink will do...

As long as they can mention one liquid is less dense than the other so it will be
on top. Vice versa
