INTRODUCTION

Many times, the gain required from an amplifier cannot be obtained by only one amplifier stage.

Therefore, several amplifier stages are cascaded together so that the individual gain of each amplifier is

multiplied to get an overall gain.

In this experiment, you will build two-stage cascaded amplifier, make measurements, and draw

conclusions based on those measurements.

The troubleshooting section will examine the effects of capacitor failures on the multistage

amplifier. You will install faults and make circuit measurements to be able to relate measured values to

component failures.

OBJECTIVES

• Add to your knowledge of cascaded amplifiers

• Be able to relate measured values to circuit failures

DISCUSSION

The purpose of this experiment is to understand the characteristics and behavior of

cascaded amplifiers. Right out of the bat, inspecting the values collected from our TABLE 1.1, the
students can clearly see that the DC values and AC values are definitely different from each other
for both stages 1 and 2. In DC, the values across VB, VE, and VC for both stages are identical.
Especially with both VCs having a value of 8.9 and 8.2 for stages one and two respectively, the
students didn’t see the significance of “stage 1” and “stage 2.” Now, observing the AC values, the
students can clearly see the gradual increase in outputs with V b of stage 1 having a value of 0.016
V and the output of the stage 2 Vout 3.7V – a massively amplified value from 0.016V. In
troubleshooting, the students will know that the C2 is shorted once the value of Vb is zero. In the
same manner, the students will know that C2 is shorted when the values of VB and VC are equal,
and so does with Vb and Vc.

CONCLUSION

At the end of this experiment, the students can conclude three things. First, in
troubleshooting the circuit, the circuit is diagnosed with an open C2 when the value of Vb is zero
in AC values. Then, the circuit is diagnosed with a shorted C2 when the values of VB and VC
are equal, and also the same with Vb and Vc. Finally, the students can conclude that multistage
amplifiers can indeed be used to increase the overall small signal voltage gain and/or provide an
overall voltage gain greater than one.
