EQUILIBRIUM – MOMENT OF FORCE OR TORQUE

I. Objectives:

This experiment will be conducted in order to understand more subjectively the law of
equilibrium. We will hungrily study the process of equilibrium in hopes of determining the
concept of torque.

II. Scientific Sketch:

(Platform Balance) (Demonstration Balance) (Set of weights)

III. Method:

We gathered and recalled our knowledge about equilibrium or other topics that were
related to it so that it can help in our endeavor towards searching for its meaning.
Then we set up the device, which is called platform balance, a set of weights, and a
demonstration balance. We set it up by following the procedures that were dictated on the manual. When
we felt satisfied and contented by our set up without any outside help of course, we started answering the
demands of the experiment. Balancing the meter stick first, having equal distance and finding its center of
gravity.

Then we moved on to measuring the asked objects in the guide. We measured the weights, the
masses of the scale pans. Then we calculated the sum of the moments of force around the center of gravity
of the beam for each trial.

V. Discussion of Results:
As what we had observed in this activity depending on the results that we had acquired,
like moments where, moment of force is a measure of its tendency to cause a body to rotate about
a specific point or axis. In this concept the moment arm, the distance from the axis of rotation,
plays an important role.

VII. Conclusion:

I conclude that this experiment will be of help to our further studies into the realm of
physics and also by completing our course for it. This experiment was a success, on our side. We
have learned a handful of interesting and new facts by doing this experiment.
