Reexamine your evidence - The Hound of the Baskervilles

1. Both Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Mortimer are men of science, yet at times they seem to
have differing attitudes toward the legend of the hound of the Baskervilles. Compare and
contrast their attitudes toward the legend. Focus especially on what they say and do that is
related to the legend. I will need at least ONE compare paragraph and TWO contrast
paragraphs.

• Focus especially on Chapters 3 and 4, do Mortimer and Holmes seem to believe the curse is
true or false?
• Look at how Holmes and Mortimer analyze the events leading to Charles death. Which one
of them seems more likely to look at supernatural explanations for the clues left on the moor
(i.e, the footprints.)?

2. Sherlock Holmes’ faithful sidekick is Dr. John Watson. Based on what you have read,
compare and contrast the two men. Focus specifically on their physical descriptions,
personalities, actions, and words. I will need at least ONE compare paragraph and TWO
contrast paragraphs.

• Focus especially on Chapter #s 1 and3. As you look at your Cornell Notes and DDATS, look
at how the two men talk to each other. Do their attitudes toward each other seem more
positive or negative?
• Also, look at how each one of them looks at the evidence presented in the case. Who
seems better at using inferences to figure things out? Which one seems more likely to make
mistakes?
• Also, look at the chapters in which Watson investigates on his own(#s 8-11). Think about
whether Holmes would have dealt with the situation in the same way.

3. In the novel, we learn about several members of the Baskerville family, most notably, Hugo,
Charles, and Henry. Choose TWO of them. Compare and contrast the two kinsmen.Focus on
their actions and their personalities.I will need at least ONE compare paragraph and TWO
contrast paragraphs.

• For Hugo and Charles, look your DDATs and Cornell Notes, especially for Chapters 1 and 2.
Think about any characteristics that really stand out based on their actions, especially how
they treat others. Which one seems more like an SLE5 type of guy?
• For look at how the three Baskervilles make decisions. Which one is more of an SLE2 guy,
responsible and making good choices?
• Also, look at how Henry relates to the Stapletons, especially Miss Stapleton. Do you think he
acts more like Hugo would treat them or Charles?
• Another thing to consider is how Henry works with Holmes and Watson on the case. Do you
think Hugo or Charles would have acted the same way?
