"Using genetics to unravel the
ecology and economic potential of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera”
Abstract: The giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera, is a fast
growing brown algae of enormous ecological and economic interest that forms luxurious submerged Friday, April 5, 2019 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm forests in many parts of world. Following decades of exciting giant kelp ecological research in California, in Ray R. Irani Hall the last ten years population genetics analysis has tackled 1050 Childs Way, RRI 101 Los Angeles, CA 90089-2910 giant kelp life history secrets. Genetic analysis extended our knowledge in many areas from gene-flow and meta- population dynamics; biogeography; mating system and For additional information, contact: inbreeding depression to inter individual heterogeneity Sergey Nuzhdin, PhD and clonality. In this presentation I will synthesize our snuzhdin@usc.edu findings in the aforementioned areas and discuss how this background knowledge contributed to first genomic Jen Nelson jmbrewer@usc.edu selection program targeting this important kelp.
