1000 VA UPS Model ALS 210

Gamatronic Electronic Industries Ltd. User Guide

1. DESCRIPTION
The ALS210 UPS is of the classic “on-line” type. The structure of the UPS is of the “double
conversion” type in which the connected load is completely isolated from the mains utility.

The UPS is comprised out of several blocks:

• Incoming Double-Pole Isolator (MCB)

• Mains Input Isolation Transformer
• Power Supply (AC to DC Rectifier-Charger)
• DC to AC Inverter with a built-in Static-Switch (model IP210)
• Batteries (4x12V 24AH)
• Output Distribution MCBs
• Manual Bypass Switch

Also included is an "ALARM" terminal that provides signalization of the status of the UPS to
be remotely accessed.

The output sinusoidal waveform is accurately and digitally reproduced by the micro-controller
of the unit.

Output is synchronized to the input so that transfers to and from the bypass input are smooth.
Output frequency reverts automatically to 50 or 60 Hz according to the recorded input
frequency prior to line-input failure. This is done by a digital phase-locked-loop device
(DPLL) that is incorporated into the inverter.

Output is floating and output Neutral can be earthed or remain floating.

Output voltage is distributed into eight separate channels using eight MCBs.

Input voltage and frequency for operation are wide and covers 110VAC to 250VAC and 45Hz
to 65Hz.

There is a built-in manual B/P switch to enable the operator to bypass the whole unit.

All blocks and devices are housed in a 19”/16U cabinet.

The DC-AC inverter (which is the heart of the UPS) is a hot-plugged type and can be replaced
easily. The power supply can be replaced as well.

2. ALS210 DIAGNOSTICS
The IP210ALS inverter of the UPS shuts down automatically during operation for specific
reasons. After shutdown the bar graph indicates the cause of the shutdown according to the
coding specified in the figure below and goes to bypass mode.
Ending a permanent shutdown state requires shortly pressing the "OFF" button of the IP210
inverter module (that serves as a reset button).

This feature helps troubleshoot problems.

3. INSTALLING THE UPS

When installing the UPS, ensure that there will always be at least 30 cm of clearance space
between the side ventilation holes of the UPS and other objects or walls, and at least 5 cm
between the UPS rear panel and any other objects or walls. This is to permit proper dispersion
of exhaust heat.

The four 20mm holes at the bottom supports are for holding down bolts. The picture below
illustrates the correct location of all cables in a UPS that has been installed correctly. Figure 2
illustrates the wiring of the UPS.

To install the UPS:

1. Turn off all breakers and sources to the UPS (GENSET) before connecting the various
cables.
2. Verify that cables are of adequate gauge and insulation.
3. Remove the gland plate.
4. Insert cables from the aperture below and connect to the appropriate terminals above
the bar.
5. Use the brown wire at the input section (right side) for proper input voltage selection.
Insert the loose end of this wire to the correct voltage entry, as marked on the adjacent
plate (factory default is 230V).
6. Ground loads and sources with the ground (Protective Earth) bar.
7. Verify that the connectors are marked clearly.
Note: ALARM outputs are floating and can be tied to any potential.

4. OPERATING THE UPS

4.1 UPS Startup Sequence
1. Verify that the voltage setting of the input transformer (input voltage terminals) is
correct.
2. Verify that ALL magnetic circuit breakers are OFF.
3. Verify that the MANUAL BYPASS switch is in position “0”.
4. Turn on the AC MAIN INPUT breakers.
5. Turn on the ST.SW INPUT breaker.
6. Turn on the P.S. INPUT breaker.
7. Turn on the P.S. OUTPUT breaker.
8. Verify that the ON LED at the power supply lit.
9. Turn on the BATTERY breaker.
10. Wait for 30 seconds... (for the input capacitors to charge).
11. Turn on the appropriate load breakers (No. 1 to 8).
12. Transfer the MANUAL BYPASS switch to position "1" (normal).
13. Verify that everything is working properly and the inverter is not over-loaded.
Note: Inverter overload is indicated by the fifth red LED on the load bar graph.

4.2 Manual Bypass

For maintenance purpose the UPS can be electrically bypassed, input to output.

This is done by the “MANUAL BYPASS” switch that has 3 positions:

• Position "1" – the normal position in which the output is connected to the output of
the inverter.
• Position "2" – the output of the UPS is directly connected to the input (through the
isolation transformer).
• Position "0" – an intermediate idle position between Positions 1 and 2 that enables
smooth switching switch between those two states. In order to switch smoothly from
position "1" to position "2" and vice-versa, the operator should pause in the "0"
position for 30 seconds.

This position can be also used to power-off the inverter module for replacement
purpose.

4.3 Battery Test

To monitor the condition of the battery (without the risk of load failure):
1. Press the BATT. TEST button at the power supply unit.
2. Wait for a few seconds (5 -10) and verify that the "DC" LED of the inverter unit
remains on, indicating a normal DC voltage.
Pressing the BATT. TEST button lowers the DC output of the power supply to about 45V. If
the battery is healthy it will maintain a higher voltage on the DC bus (about 48V) that will
keep the "DC" LED on.

Note: It is important that the test will be done while the UPS is loaded (at least one LED in
the inverter bar-graph is lit).

4.4 UPS Shutdown Sequence

To securely shut down the ALS210:
1. Transfer the MANUAL BYPASS switch to position "0" (idle).
2. Turn off BATTERY breaker first.
3. Turn off all other breakers.

5. ALARM INTERFACE
This isolated interface is dedicated to getting information regarding the status of the UPS and
shutting it down in case of emergency (ESD).

All signals are derived from the DB9 connector at the rear side of the IP210ALS inverter.

The ALARMS dry-contacts (relays) are listed in the table below. Please note that all relays
are rated 50VDC, 500mA.
DRY CONTACT DESCRIPTION
AC Mains Fail (AC FAIL) Contacts are open for mains fault or out of range
Bypass Active (B/P ACTIVE) Contacts are open when bypass is active
Battery Low (BAT. LOW) Contacts are open for low DC voltage or open battery CB
Common Alarm (GEN. ALRM) Summary of all above alarms

Note: A "healthy" status is indicated by a contacts closure.

The diagram below shows the schematic. It is also placed in the documents pocket of the UPS.
