1. DESCRIPTION
The ALS210 UPS is of the classic “on-line” type. The structure of the UPS is of the “double
conversion” type in which the connected load is completely isolated from the mains utility.
Also included is an "ALARM" terminal that provides signalization of the status of the UPS to
be remotely accessed.
The output sinusoidal waveform is accurately and digitally reproduced by the micro-controller
of the unit.
Output is synchronized to the input so that transfers to and from the bypass input are smooth.
Output frequency reverts automatically to 50 or 60 Hz according to the recorded input
frequency prior to line-input failure. This is done by a digital phase-locked-loop device
(DPLL) that is incorporated into the inverter.
Output voltage is distributed into eight separate channels using eight MCBs.
Input voltage and frequency for operation are wide and covers 110VAC to 250VAC and 45Hz
to 65Hz.
There is a built-in manual B/P switch to enable the operator to bypass the whole unit.
The DC-AC inverter (which is the heart of the UPS) is a hot-plugged type and can be replaced
easily. The power supply can be replaced as well.
1.1.1 Do’s
• Read this manual carefully before operating the UPS.
• Review the safety precautions described below to avoid damaging users or equipment.
• Install the UPS in a clean and well-ventilated location.
• Ensure that there is at least 30 cm of clearance space between the side ventilation holes
of the UPS and other objects or walls, and at least 5 cm between the UPS rear panel
and any other objects or walls.
• Use the UPS only for its intended purpose.
• Allow only qualified technicians to service the UPS. There are no user-serviceable
components. Do not try to repair it yourself!
• Pull down all MCBs while the UPS is in storage for long periods.
WARNING
Appropriate precautions should be taken during inspection and servicing as
there is a risk of lethal electric shock.
The cabinet contains a series of 12V battery cells that provide a high energy 48V
even when the UPS is not connected to the electricity mains.
1.1.2 Don’ts
• Do not open the cover of UPS components under any circumstances.
• Do not insert any objects through the ventilation holes.
• Do not move the UPS while it is operating.
• Do not turn the UPS upside down during transportation.
• Do not connect or disconnect cables to the UPS while it is operating.
• Do not turn on the battery circuit breaker when the battery cabinet is disconnected
from the UPS.
WARNING
Do not touch the input/output terminals with bare hands while UPS is operating.

2. ALS210 DIAGNOSTICS
The IP210ALS inverter of the UPS shuts down automatically during operation for specific
reasons. After shutdown the bar graph indicates the cause of the shutdown according to the
coding specified in the figure below and goes to bypass mode.
Ending a permanent shutdown state requires shortly pressing the "OFF" button of the IP210
inverter module (that serves as a reset button).
The four 20mm holes at the bottom supports are for holding down bolts. The picture below
illustrates the correct location of all cables in a UPS that has been installed correctly. Figure 2
illustrates the wiring of the UPS.
• Position "1" – the normal position in which the output is connected to the output of
the inverter.
• Position "2" – the output of the UPS is directly connected to the input (through the
isolation transformer).
• Position "0" – an intermediate idle position between Positions 1 and 2 that enables
smooth switching switch between those two states. In order to switch smoothly from
position "1" to position "2" and vice-versa, the operator should pause in the "0"
position for 30 seconds.
This position can be also used to power-off the inverter module for replacement
purpose.
Note: It is important that the test will be done while the UPS is loaded (at least one LED in
the inverter bar-graph is lit).
5. ALARM INTERFACE
This isolated interface is dedicated to getting information regarding the status of the UPS and
shutting it down in case of emergency (ESD).
All signals are derived from the DB9 connector at the rear side of the IP210ALS inverter.
The ALARMS dry-contacts (relays) are listed in the table below. Please note that all relays
are rated 50VDC, 500mA.
DRY CONTACT DESCRIPTION
AC Mains Fail (AC FAIL) Contacts are open for mains fault or out of range
Bypass Active (B/P ACTIVE) Contacts are open when bypass is active
Battery Low (BAT. LOW) Contacts are open for low DC voltage or open battery CB
Common Alarm (GEN. ALRM) Summary of all above alarms
The diagram below shows the schematic. It is also placed in the documents pocket of the UPS.
